Trimming the wall from floor to ceiling is a great idea. The trim doesn't necessarily need to be tile either -- white wood board like the cabinets will do well ... and would be my preference. You could even wrap the corner with a pair of 1"x3" boards.

Thanks for the replies. Jan- my concern was that in original design the cabinets and counter and backsplash all went to end of the wall- now we have this 3" space of wall that we weren't expecting- so having other eyes say if it looks strange (as it does to me but maybe only because I wasn't expecting it) or not is very helpful.

It works much better not to have the base cabinet all the way to the end. There has to be some countertop overhang on the side so you would either have, 1) the countertop sticking out 3/4" into the walk space beyond the wall or, 2) you would have to end the cabinet 3/4" from the end of the wall so that the countertop could overhang and not protrude out from the wall.

It looks much better as it is. People try to get things too close to corners and windows and such and it makes everything look crowded.

really looks great -- looks purposeful... i liked the wood trim up the wall... but seems more work needed to pull all it. It looks great... leave it.

It doesn't look strange. : ) At all. Hang some art and call it a day.

Brick wood builders- yes that is what we would do if we extended- countertopnwould be flush and cabinets would end 1/2" before the wall... it's so helpful to get input as I was worried I was more obsessed with it not being "per plans" rather than seeing it as perhaps a better or at least as good as option!
