Need help on area rug sizing and placement for large space

I read the furniture placement rules where ideally you want either all the furniture under the rug with 6" or so border, or just the front legs of all of the furniture. My issue is that my sofa is so incredibly long, I can't find a stock rug so I have to go custom I think. The rug will not go under the chaise by the fireplace. I have considered putting another rug layered/angled under the chaise. I'm a bit concerned going off the internet rules for rug placement in this room, since it's a big expense and such a large open space. Disregard the rug pictured (from our old house) and the corner bench thing, we just have it there to have something for now...

My questions: With this large open space, should all of the furniture be on the rug, or should I do the half on? Any and all rug feedback would be great. Thanks in advance!

How does a 10' x 14' rug look in your room because that's a standard size as is 12' x 15'? The selection will be limited, of course. The other option is to have broadloom of your needed size cut and bound as an area rug.

I would do one LARGE rug. Many hand knotted rugs come in 12 x 16, 12 X 18 and other large sizes.

The key question is, what is your budget?

Fun2BHere A single 10x14 (100" x 144") rug won't even cover the sofa (163" long), that is the dilemma. I'll have to investigate this broadloom rug customization. That's a great idea. chispa Yes I agree. I haven't seen any rugs that are 12x16 or 12x18 online, so maybe I need to visit a few rug stores and see what they have. I'm just wondering... should I look for a rug to put ALL of the furniture on top (sans the chaise) or half on / half off?

Chloe! I remember this post, you got a nice recommendations...What happened? Now i can not see old post.

You can move chaise closer to sofa and us regular size area rug. Put front legs of furniture on rug.

One large rug only. If you cannot find anything, look at quality carpet stores, find one with a nice pattern & color that you like, and have them bind it into a rug.

I would look for a fab persian rug in a huge size , with all that plain leather it would be my choice.

Be sure the entire sofa is on the rug, certainly not just the front legs.

You could make a custom rug out of Flor carpet tiles. This is a nice option if you have any outlets under the area rug, and you don't want to cut the rug to allow cords to pass through.

celerygirl Thank you for the photoshopped rug image! I didn't really think of moving the chaise closer and getting a rug to fit underneath it also. I also have no clue what is up w/ the post... I never deleted and re-posted? There were other comments that are now missing??

Barbara Griffith Designs So the celerygirl photo w/ just the front legs of the sofa on the rug isn't what you'd recommend? That, therein, was my original question... "All On" or "Half On"? I didn't even realize that carpet stores could bind carpet into a custom-sized rug. That is amazing. Now, I just need to determine the size. The furniture cost a small fortune, so I want to ensure that the rug is appropriate. Thank you all for the great advice!!

Esmaili Rugs and Antiques, Inc. ingrid_vc so. CA zone 9 I like the light colored one best I think... and I definitely want a modern pattern.

I found a local retailer who can do custom size rugs (even custom variations of rug patterns in store with colors we match / pick out). I checked this one out. Was thinking I could even change the black to blue? But I kind of like the black for contrast. Or is that too many colors? Or should I go for more COLOR? I need COLOR IN MY LIFE! But, I could do that with pillows, art, and accessories..... ?

I am planning on doing automatic shades, not drapes, in this room.. prob neutral so won't add much color. Also, don't mind the outdoor furniture that's all bunched up against the window... and I just put the orange pillows on the sofa to try and get some color going for reference. You all are so much help!
