I need to add color to my boring living room. New build

Can you please help decorating this living room? What should I add? What color rug, pillows, accent chair. I have no clue ;-(

Great art piece! Take a color from there and find an area rug that will bring some of those colors down to the sitting area. Perhaps an Asian or Persian rug will do it. That's where I would start. Then you take some of those colors and tie the space together by using them around your living space to create a nice flow -- lamps, runner on the table, lamp on an end table, and maybe a glass square coffee table with the same idea. Looks like a fun project and you've got a great start!

The fire place is so neglected compared to the whole place it's a precious piece that we make it the center of the space or the master piece so as celery girl identified in this photo, the picture above the mantel must be huge and grabbing attention, also the position of seating area must be changed to the wall opposite to the window..

You could get some more color with faux romans since the FP is so close to the windows.

I love the big blue/teal rug, chair & curtain panels. Maybe even carry that color over into your kitchen/dining nook. You could change out the pendents globes for something with more color & add art to the small wall by the sliders. Maybe something more vertical there.

There's no place to put a drink! Add a beautiful coffee table!

While I like the OP's art, I love the SIZE of Celerygirl's art in her mockups. You could use the piece you have in another location.

OMG thanks so much for all the quick responses. I love all the ideas. What do you think about putting in a mirror on top of the fireplace instead of a picture?

You can do a lot with your space. You most likely want to put art above the fireplace. Here are some ideas from our designs to aid you:

Notice the art piece to the side? You could do something bold. Get bold pillows and window treatments as well.

You could also stick with a muted color palette like in our designs here:

Mirror would be great. I am so crazy about oversized mirrors and wall art.

I do not think mirrors are generally a good idea. . . unless they reflect something interesting.

Get pillows with texture like woven or fur and not have them all the same texture , that immediately adds warmth to the room. Standing lamps, small side tables for drinks, get a throw to put over the sofa in a casual way, organic objects like wooden pieces etc and plants, they all add so much to a room. What will be on the wall oppopsite the sofa?

A round coffee table to break up all the angles of the furnishings.

Love the suggested designs! Additionally you could add something like a dwarf lemon tree or maybe a pear tree next to the fireplace. Depends on what colors you want to use. Would add some color and dimension which is always nice. Good luck!

    Hi all,

This is what I have so far. I am planning on moving the TV and console if necessary. What color do you think I should buy the ascent chair and drapes? Also, I need ideas for coffee tables. Any help is highly appreciated.

The TV is in the right place. You could use a couple of chairs at the end of the sectional. If there's room, I'd pull the sectional back so it's even with the window wall and doesn't overlap the fireplace. If not enough room, pull it back as far as you can and still have walk space behind it.

The mirror over the mantel does absolutely nothing for the space. I would put your original canvas back there or, better yet, get a larger piece of art. You can use the art to determine an accent color.

A large peice of art over the tv or maybe picture ledges with larger peices would look cool. 2 large skinny colored skinny vases on your mantel would help. Multicolored pillows with a throw & I would keep the curtains simple.

I moved your sofa and rug back and moved the plant to the other side so as not to occlude the fireplace, replaced your mirror with art, added a chair and coffee table. Two views:

Oops. Forgot the curtains. Linen close to the color of the walls.

I agree with the curtains being linen & light colored. You don't want peoples eyes to be drawn to curtains.

A statement art piece above the fireplace would be a natural focal point. Try picking at least one color from the artwork and repeating it in details around the room. Also resist the urge to choose an art piece that lines up with mantel edges. Use a piece that is narrower or wider to ensure that the artwork is a feature and not just an extension of the fireplace.

    Hello

As many of you think an art piece looks better than the mirror. I am trying to use what I have and the current art piece is 3x4 and looks too small above the mantel. Can I put both one on top of the other one instead? Side by side won't work or should I hang them on the TV wall?

Grover and I both prefer a single canvas, even if it's a bit too small.

I would move the TV further to the left. It's a little too close to the fireplace. Single art over the fireplace is much better. I like your choice of rug.

I love the picture that Groveraxel posted. Seems to brighten the room a bit. I also really like your rug. To be honest, mirror wasn't a good choice. Beautiful room!

For a coffee table, consider an elongated oval? You'd probably want your guests to reach their beverage wherever they are seated, and the oval would impart more interest to the room than a rectangle (generally speaking).

    I enjoy groveraxel's suggestion...
