How would you fix? RTA cabinet: Chestnut Pillow--Experiences

last modified: 8 years ago

I've been around Gardenweb build and kitchens for a long time. We did a lot of remodeling 4-9 years ago (in 2 phases). I had temporary tenants in my house this past year, and their dog chewed the fronts of 2 of my RTA cabinet doors/drawer fronts. I'm so disappointed! We move back next summer, and am sad about my cabinets' damage.

2 questions: Calling Joseph! How would you repair face damage to cabinet door? I'll see if I can attach a picture in a followup post.

Next:
I had ordered replacement cabinets from CabinetMania (which, is on Houzz, as well as other places, and has multiple locations--at least Wisconsin and Florida), but after a screw up with the credit card charges (they charged twice--once through WI, once through FL, which they aren't able to reverse and are requiring me to go through my CC to have the case reviewed), they are now only taking e-check. Given my experience thus far, I am questioning sending them money by e-check, where there is limited consumer protection.

Has anyone had a good experience with them in this group? I want to believe they will follow through, but having a hard time given my experience thusfar. Tenants surpassed their damage deposit, so it is left to be seen if they will actually pay up. Therefore I'm looking for an inexpensive option (and because they are RTA, apparently, I can't get just the doors or cabinet face with doors attached. Anybody want 3 cabinet shells and 24" and 12" drawers?)

I'm looking for replacement options for Chestnut pillow IKS cabinets. Does anyone in this group perhaps have some of these cabinets around they'd like to move? They were installed 4 years ago at my house, so, I'm wondering if someone is a dealer, or was a dealer with IKS, and is willing to sell. West-coast, or at least mid-west preferred, as all the other options I've found are east coast or south, and shipping is nonexistent or expensive.

I haven't actually seen the damage in person to know how deep it is, since it happened in the last month they were living there, and wasn't there when I visited. (I live out of the country at the moment). Thoughts on how to repair, instead of replace? I'm not sure what is the best option, at this point. New tenants moving in this weekend.

It's a rental. A little putty and paint will fix that nicely.

It is not a rental. It is my house. Which I intend to return to when I return next summer after a 2 year work assignment abroad. So, I'd like it fixed more than "it's a rental" status for my return. This is my master bath.

It is also a HCOL area.

Frankly, it is comments like that that give renters license to be crappy, in my opinion. We should expect better of renters.

PS--overall they were good renters. Just young, and obviously not able to watch their dog as closely as they should have as they were transitioning houses (when the dog was probably anxious about all the packing).

If they've charged you twice, shouldn't they ship one of the orders? Is the same cabinet available online? Couldn't you just place a new order online with your credit card? Or is it a special order for just the doors?

I wonder if any of the sample doors would match size wise... I think you'd have to get hinges drilled but not a big deal. Personally, I'd see if any custom cabinet shops would take this up.

Just ordering the doors aren't an option (I tried. I tried with multiple companies). I tried to order online with CabinetMania. They (wisconsin) charged my card same day. Then, again a week later from the Florida store. And, then when I asked them to reverse one of the charges, they said they haven't received payment at all because they are having issues with their CC vendor, and I'd have to dispute the charges from my CC. They're only accepting echeck. And, they won't ship until they receive the echeck.

Doesn't that seem not very "safe" financially, from the consumer point of view, especially after the experience with the CC charges?

Anyway, there are others online, but shipping is the killer. So, I'm trying to discover if there are any midwest to west coast IKS suppliers. IKS online doesn't have any info except to become a dealer. Living outside the country, that seems like not an option.

A comment about the vendor, and I have no experience with them. Any merchant can make a mistake and charge you twice. Red flags are "I can't do

the refund, contact your issuer" and second red flag, " I no longer take credit cards." Those could indicate that the bank that underwrites the merchant's card acceptance has shut him down for unsound practices.

I would not spend money that I wasn't willing to lose.

Ok we posted at same time. "We haven't rec'd payment because we are having issues with cc vendor", means that their vendor is holding payments to them to cover expected losses from all the issuers who will be coming after them with claims.

Kirkwall it sounds like the company is in financial trouble. I wouldn't do business with them at this point

And I want to say I am renting right now and try to treat the rental the same as if it were my house

Localeater & Cpartist, that is my thought exactly. So, trying to find an affordable alternate, since the tenant deposit is spent... And, I want the cabinets to look nice, and not just patched.

I'm wondering if this is a job that a good cabinet maker could do; and whether or not they *would* do it is another question.

If I have to change out the doors entirely, to something custom, then I have 15 doors/drawer fronts to buy. And, I don't think that will be less than another vendor of these cabinets.

Does anyone need wood cabinets (2-24" and 1-12" drawer bank) but don't want the doors? LOL

    Kirkhall,

Did you contact Scherrs for replacement doors? I don't see any reason why you can't use replacement doors. Scherrs has a ton of profiles in their catalog and they can finish it to your request.

To me it looks like a good woodworker could fix them up and make them look like new

The damage does not look that extensive, and probably could be fixed by you or by a finish/furniture/cabinetry carpenter. You might consider getting a more close-up photo of the damage and posting in the woodworking forum about how to repair the stain and finish of the existing doors.

homepro--while I haven't contacted Scherrs, I did look through their website. If I change out the doors to something else, rather than just fixing the 2, or replacing the 3 cabinets, I'd have 15 doors and drawer fronts to replace. I don't think it is cost effective compared with replacing or repairing.

That damage isn't at eye level, therefore I'm going with the putty/paint/stain recommendation. Replacement doors would look worse than repaired matching ones.

If your agent on the ground can't go to Depot and buy a simple wood touch up crayon and pen and do it herself, then you don't have the right rental management company. That is a 10 minute disguise for even someone moderately handy. You could replace the whole dang thing with more cheepchinedecrapola cabinets for what it would cost to replace just the doors and drawer fronts from a good quality American maker.

    Kirk hall,

Why would you need 15 doors? You would order just a replacement door. Based on what this looks like in real life, you may be able to find a good cabinet shop to fix it for a few hundred dollars locally.

    Good luck!

Don't ever send an echeck to a cabinet vendor, unless you have so much money you want to throw it away.

Going just by the photo it appears the damage is on the surface away from a corner. The dog didn't chew off part of the door. It's likely it can be repaired inexpensively. The guys who have the supplies and experience are professional movers. They handle touchups like this all the time.

Find a good wood furniture repair person and the doors will be as good as new.

Yikes I'd stay far away from them if echeck only is their policy. New cabinets get dinged all the time during shipping, what happens than?

I'd never waste money on replacing doors for scratches like those. Even if you don't want to do it yourself, hiring the fanciest, most expensive furniture repair person in town will be cheaper and work better than buying new doors.

Look into a Furniture Medic franchise. Shouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred dollars at the most.

I think it would be fine touched up--it might take a little sanding if there are splinters but it doesn't look too bad.

(If you treat renters well, they treat you well. They are actually people too, just like you! College students excepted of course....:) )

Hi Fori, Yes we treated these well. They were just out of college though (group of young roommates), so a few things to still grow/mature through (we had to get rid of a couple of beer pong tables they left in the garage on move out, for example).

Thanks! I'll look into a Furniture Medic. Never heard of them, but it is probably just what we need.

Didn't know Furniture Medic was a franchise. When we relocated there was damage on our custom made TV cabinet. The moving company hired the local Furniture Medic guy and he did a nice job repairing the cabinet.

Vicki I bought some cabinets from them and never received them. Called a thousand times and no response. I purchased through PayPal so they covered the cost. I hope everything works out for you.

My credit cards reversed both of my charges. I hope you get resolution! They definitely didn't earn any marks from me.

I wasn't as smart as you two.... I gave them an 'e-check'....how dumb....ugh! Frank has supposedly two employees named 'Kevin' and 'Angela'... I think he is all of them...just tries to make his business look even more legit. I am going to pursue this. I have heard I wasn't the only one who has fallen victim, but an e-check from my bank... oh it's just heartbreaking.

Does ANYONE know of the address where my attorney can mail a letter to Frank LaMark? He has conflicting information all over the internet. Thank you for any help! As you can see my lil 'refund' was not exactly good news.

Look at the spelling in this email Frank sent....unbelievable, and he was stating it was MY patience is needed in this matter. After several contacts it's the customers fault.

I want to keep posting the illegal refund check they sent me. It would be very good if they decided to actually give me my money back. I will keep posting about them until they act. Thank you for your reply Jamie. You should keep posting too.

A long time ago, when I was young, we paid for furniture with a check (idiotic). The company closed its doors, but still had a phone number, with an answering machine. I made it a mission to get that money back. They never called, rarely did I get a person on the phone, and when I did, it was a young lady who whispered to me that they were behind on her paychecks, too.

This was before Yelp, so what I did, was look up the names of the officers, and investigate to find out the names of the PEOPLE running the company. And then I called the district attorney to file a complaint. Now, it is no guarantee that the district attorney will actually do anything, however, my voicemails (and nowadays you have emails), were pointedly assuring them that their names were in the hands of the D.A., and I intended to pursue their criminal fraud to the furthest extent of the law. Lo and behold, I received a check in the mail that actually had sufficient funds to deposit it.

As long as they still have a phone, and an email address you can still reach them. It's worth a try.

Thank you Mrs. S, I am in the process of doing just that! xo

Please look at my updated 'mess' with Frank LaMark and cabinet mania if you'd like to see how he treats honest people .

He can't even spell. One of many false promises by email we received.

    Jamie,

(Basically, I'm surprised you got ANY of your order, so many haven't gotten anything but a emptied bank account)

Please go to a special Facebook page I got up exposing this fraud. I'd appreciate if you could do that.

Here's the FB link, share it with any you know may need help:

Well, that pattern, Jamie, is what may rise to the level of needing law enforcement's help. That's why I recommended contacting the district attorney, the police. If it's really purposeful, it's worth contacting the FBI.

You're lucky they are a stained cabinet. That will make a repair much easier. I suggest you contact a high end furniture retailer in your area and ask who they use to repair damage. They will know because things can get damaged during delivery. I had this happen with a very expensive hutch some years back. It sustained significant damage during delivery. The store manager asked me to let them try to repair it before ordering a new hutch. I was skeptical, very skeptical, but agreed with the understanding it would be replaced if I wasn't happy.

The repair was and remains flawless fifteen years on. For me to say that is saying a lot - I spent many years as a coating engineer responsible for the physical quality of coated surfaces. I was so angry at the time that it had been damaged that I was just looking for the slightest evidence it had been repaired so I could a have a new hutch ordered. I couldn't detect a thing.

I watched as the repairs were made. It was amazing, part art / part magic. A good furniture repair specialist can work wonders.
