Overwintering Thai Giant and Black Magic elephant ears

I've read that Thai Giant and Black Magic elephant ears are either slow to develop corms or don't do it at all so I keep them growing in a semi-dormant state in my basement under lights over the winter. l regularly lose a number of them due to what I suspect is over-watering because it is so difficult for me to strike the right balance of moisture, temperature and light. All my other elephant ear varieties are easy to keep well over the winter by packing them in large trash cans filled with pine needles and forgetting about them until it's time to plant them again outdoors in the spring .

So, here's my question...

Has anyone had success overwintering Thai Giant and/or Black Magic elephant ears by storing their corms during the winter? I've purchased fairly large Black Magic corms (at least I think that's what they were) so I don't understand why it's said that they must be kept growing over the winter.
