What light fixture do I use to replace kitchen fluorescent light???

I am needing to replace the harsh fluorescent light fixture that the builders placed in my kitchen, but have no idea what kind of light to use. Ceilings are about 8 feet, so nothing that hangs too low. We are adding small can lights around the kitchen to help with overall lighting as well. Nothing to modern, we have a very traditional home. As for the picture, keep in mind we are at the beginning of our remodel. Cabinets are being painted white/cream, stainless appliances. Granite is new. Walls will be painted a light color and creamy backsplash.

    Need some pictures please.

Ok.. added a pic. Again, this is just the beginning of the transformation. Don't pay attention to all the finishes as those will be changed. Granite is new.

I think I'd just do more cans.

9 4" recessed cans would be a start, possible some decorative pendants (3?) over the bar area

We've talked about that. I have a single 6" can there, but I've seen adapter sets for taking a can light and making it into a pendant.

    Your three main choices are:

    1) be sure you have enough cans that you are covered for both ambient and task lighting without a central fixture.

    2) put a track light in the center to provide ambient light and back-up task lighting

    3) add a new flushmount fixture to give ambient light and rely on the new cans to give your task lighting.

If you want to do #3, you just want something bright (usually the equivalent of 3 60-W bulbs will do it) and low-profile. Closed helps keep it clean...

Any ceiling light in that location will throw light that is just as bad--with harsh, flat shadows. Plus, as you stand at the counter/sink/stove, you'll be casting a shadow on your work area.

If you use recessed cans, you need globes on them so that the light gets diffused and doesn't all get shot down to the floor. You want points of light spreading horizontally from all over the kitchen.

Use sconces, if you can, and certainly under-cabinet lights.

And my favorite idea was to put a motion sensor that turns on the under-cabinet lights when you walk in the room. I provides enough illumination in the evening for most tasks and you're going to want them on anyway if you're working on the counters.

wow, tatts, where did you put the sensor?

(in my house the cats would be turning them on and off all night, but the idea is spiff.)

    Omg acm!! Mine too!

My LED cans don't shoot down or cast shadows. They don't even put a light spot on my counters.

There's no place for a sconce in this situation now would it look right, imo. I'm not feeling the pendant idea either.

Id just go with the can lights and focus on the rest.

Thanks for all the feedback everybody. I'm gonna bring all this up with the interior design lady that's helping me. You brought up lots of good points.

According to your description, your kitchen is warmer. You can install some kitchen lights that harmonize with warm colors. Make them look harmonious. Since your ceilings are about 8 feet, and you don't want it to be hanged too low. So I think this kitchen track light is suitable for you.
