Garage facelift needed
Comments (24)I agree with many of the great suggestions, BHG.com has some great before & after ideas. use google sketch up for tools & color play options, its so detail to attempt to even try and explain so many thoughts & I have the gifts of seeing finished in my head, so this might overwhelm in details but here goes a few subjective options , use any name brand paint co web sites coloring tools. The Tudor style cottage is charming, repeat the the upper A frame flashing s on the garage, paint some unexpected historical colors, that works on the both garage & upper left side of that house trims & all anchors the heavy brick facade, color will contrast, concrete stain the drive, make the gararge look like two faux tudor gated doors with the bold & fake hinges clued on a good wood like texture paint job, paint the entry of main house to match, if the budget allows build a Trellis Pergola over the garage facade, will balance the lower weight of the two buildings, many art students & carpentry students in local vocational schools would love the project challenges, & could offer a very fair market labor fee. replant those pine bushes on the left side of the garage, or some pampas grasses, add some window boxes to charm up the house details that grow seasonal greens & flowers, shutters on that upper floor window & flower box , do in stages, paint, then each month add $ 50 or only a 100 dollar budget for accent s, grow with new & better ideas, but some unexpected colors accents like a deep dijon mustard with brick nutmeg & sage forest greens. find some deep contrast that will pop the over look. good luck !...See MoreExterior do's and dont's for my color ideas....

Comments (10)Mtnlodge - attached is a very unworked sketch - proportions and other aspects of the house door at left of garage) not correct given a speedy sketch with no access to plans (not asking for that!). This may illustrate what I'm suggesting, at least in part. It is too time consuming to do up a proper drawing gratis, I hope you understand. Concept: take advantage of a different view, maintain the square window effect seen across the structure, bridge to front door. Elements: deck provides a covered area outside the garage for sheltered/shaded parking; pergola walkway follows angles of the house allowing light filtration for existing walkway to front door. Cost reduction: replace only the two side windows with glass doors for deck access (existing width). Retain square windows and use wall space to accommodate art collection, TV, as you like. Greatly reduced labour and interior finishing. Cost consideration: new deck and pergola—all exterior work with variables in finishing. I've shown glass rails only because that was quick—you'll want to either match existing balustrade design or introduce some glass elements elsewhere to support the use of it on the deck. The pergola over the walkway is, perhaps, an arbour and could have slats as shown or a pitched roof, following the interesting existing walkway as a bridge to the door. It is possible to fit (removable) plexiglass to provide rain/snow protection over that walk while permitting light transfer. Caveat: you have a LOT of deck area. If you are fortunate enough to have staff, be sure to plan the time spent sweeping decks in your considerations. A client who insisted on acres of glass fencing on a property in a dusty location has had to hire a weekly cleaning service for glass fences and balustrades. I always recommend thinking through the design to the liveability of a space. That said, I'd go for it. There is nothing so wonderful as having multiple options to suit the mood in enjoying nature and views, or entertaining, or in simply having a layout that permits guests and family options for spending time apart while enjoying time together. I hope these thoughts are helpful - have fun taking them further in your preferred direction. John...See MoreSOS, need some design advice for area above the garage doors
