Skylight location for dark kitchen

This kitchen will undergo a complete remodel shortly and the finished product will have a single level counter top, white cabinets that extend to the ceiling, and some can lights. As you can see in the photos, the room is dark box, especially in the mornings. The kitchen faces west and there is a sliding glass door out to the yard. The open area of the U-shaped kitchen is about 8' x 6'.

A skylight will provide nice light and add an architectural element. Task/pendant lights will be needed over the sink & counter. I would appreciate any suggestions as to location and size of a skylight (or 2?). Are there any rules or guidelines to be aware of regarding size and placement? Should the skylight align (if possible) with the existing patio doors?

A skylight will only provide light during the day , they cost quite a lot to have installed properly . I would add better overall lighting , what you have now sucks get some pots with LEDS not warm but in the 5000 range . A counter depth fridge will make the space feel more open. I would have glass door cabinets for the uppers with lighting inside too

Can you post a pic of view from your kitchen to the sliders and what are the dimensions of your kitchen. I personally think that your skylight should be centered from the sliding doors.

Patricia, thank you for that helpful information. Whether or not we opt for skylights, the kitchen is slated for some recessed lights as well as task/pendant lighting over the sink and counter. Hadn't considered the upper cabinets as a possible lighting source until now!

you can always add LED strip lights inside the perimeters of the skylight once installed as well. you definitely add a skylight as long as you don't have any rooms up above the kitchen
