How to best use this closet space

last modified: 8 years ago

We have this "closet space" in our circa house that is not used as a closet. We put a couple of hooks to gang towels and/or clothes and also hiding the laundry bin in there too for now.

The room is very modern in finish with light wood floors and neutral paint. What would you do with this space? Suggestions for optimising utility? The deep spaces on the side are definitely under utilised at the moment. Not really sure what to do with that - perhsps let it be? In terms of covering it up - loose sheer white curtain? A door would feel too solid and a bit much i think. Look forward to an exchange of ideas!

Does the Container Store offer help to organize closets? I think you need a professional to utilize this space. Take all dimensions and pictures with you as well as what you would like to store in this closet.

Where it is located makes all the difference -- closed or left open, coat closet, seasonal closet (games, coats, gear), desk, library, craft/wrapping, holiday storage, bar/beverage station. game/video closet, bench, etc. Look at what uses would add function to the room, then the adjoining spaces -- and if you aren't finding a need, put a door on those hinges and close it or clean it up and ignore it until you do. I don't think a door would feel too heavy -- you have that lovely trim and hinges that say "a door goes here." A door is more solid, true, but is a clean look -- less cluttered and busy than laundry and "stuff."

I have used regular doors, folding shutter doors and a curtain on similar closets in the many places I have lived. I think what you will do with it depends on what room it is in, what functions you need it to have, and how it will look with the rest of the room. At my last house I had a similar closet, it had shelves all the way across, and I used it for linens.

What room is this closet in?

Maybe you can send a picture of the room that this closet is in so we can get a better idea of the style.

A door would be perfect because a door is what's supposed to be there.

Hmm, thought i mentioned it is in the master bedroom. We have his n hers stand alone wardrobes from IKEA which serve us very well - also on the bedroom.

Hmm.. I didn't! Sorry folks. Here is a photo of the space. The door next to wardrobes opens out on to the landing.

Closet space being discussed is on the left wall.

Don't need the space for linens or towels or coats. Shoes, maybe in the future but not really a big need at the moment.

It sounds like you don't really need it right now so I'd put a door on it until its need really presents itself. In the meantime, you could consider adding the door and baseboard trim inside the closet. Also, is it HVAC in the ceiling? If yes, you may want to address/mask it so it's not something you see when you use the closet. Unless.........

What's on the opposite side of the wall? Could you use the closet or floor space there?

I would hang a cool looking curtain over it so I would have something cool to look at from the bed. But maybe that is just me. Maybe you want something soothing to look at. If you can't find a door, a linen curtain would work. I have had that in two apartments before, over doorways and a small nook where I wanted to hide clutter.

Either put a door on it and cover up the unfinished UGLY or finish off nicely as a built in bookcase/coffee bar...something that fits your more modern aesthetic.
