transitional kitchen and family room makeover help

Hi my design dilemma is to figure out how to turn my Tuscan style kitchen and family room into a lighter less formal transitional style. I've made some inroads by painting over the faux finished walls to an offwhite, got new bar stools, kitchen table, new family room rug to make rooms more contemporary, less brown and more lighter, got rid of heavy Tuscan furniture. Black granite counters have to stay as well as travertine file floor. Tell me what to do...if painting/staining cabinets and builtins is only way to achieve transitional look, what color will work with both warm and cool tones? A greige? Do i need to change backsplash or can it stay with the right paint color? I realize I am working with both warm and cool tones in the same room.

Probably not what you want to hear but I wouldn't paint the cabinets.

I agree Ihutch. As I was scrolling down I was like, "please don't paint the cabinets, please don't paint the cabinets". LOL I think everything is fine the way it is. Very homey and comforting. I just don't like black counter tops. I'm always stuck finding a bathroom vanity. I like fancy traditional style but when I find one I like, they always come with a damn black top.

Curious to see what the pro's say. The barstools seem the most out of place to me, but the table seems a little rustic/country to me too.

Your arched cabinet doors make this kitchen appear traditional, that wouldn’t change if you would paint. Can you remove the cabinet above the sink for a lighter feeling, and remove the carving on the hood? Or swap the hood for a more streamlined one? Again, it wouldn’t change the overall style.

Your cabinets are beautiful, keep them that way. But I think if you remove the cabinet over the sink and replace it with a modern print roman shade done from the ceiling down it would modernized the area, and remove the doodad on the hood and possibly replace it with a strip of stainless steel that would give you a bit more modern look in the kitchen. Also sleek modern SS knob on upper cabinets only will add a bit more sparkle as would SS or glass pendant over the sink area hung from the ceiling.

In the kitchen and family room replace the wavy glass in the cabinet doors with frosted or crackled glass for a modern vibe. And lastly the orange in your Fall Decor is so pretty in the room. I would consider some modern window curtains on a SS one inch or bigger diameter curtains rod for the family room in a texture to balance out the rock fireplace in a cream or taupe etc. And then have the ottomans upholstered/slipcovered in a modern print the same as the kitchen or a companion print and solid color pillows on the sofa only.

Add a pretty cactus flower on the dining table and chair cushions again in a print or a solid that will coordinate with the Roman Shade and the ottomans.

    Love your fall decorations!

Some things I would do is:

    - Replace the counters with something lighter in color

    - Add cabinet hardware

    - Remove scroll on hood or replace

    - Remove cabinets above kitchen sink

I like the bar chairs. I'm iffy on the dining set.

Here is pic of entire kitchen a lot of people say don't paint cabinets because the maple wood is so nice so instead consider replacing hood, or at least take off scroll , get rid of cabinet over sink and replace with roman shade, put pillows on kitchen chairs and recover ottomans in same print as kitchen chair pillows , change back splash, change granite to light

Chalk paint those cabinets cream with dark wax in grooves, your whole life will change. Stained cabinets may be beautiful when looking at one door, but when on all the walls they suck the light out of your kitchen. Your instincts are right!

That's good advice! You started another thread and are getting similar advice there - I think if you follow that, you'll be on your way to a more transitional style.
