24 x 24 foot garage exterior dimensions big enough?

I was just reading another garage thread and it made me realize that my garage is drawn as 24x24 ft. exterior dimensions. I believe this will give 22'8" x 22'8" interior as I think each wall is 8" thick. I think I am drywalling the interior, but cant remember if I signed the contract for this. Is this big enough for two cars (at least one SUV-toyota 4runner size)? There is a separate 16x8' attached storage area, so storage wont be such a big deal. Thank you!

It appears that a 2017 4Runner is 191" long (15' 11"). If yours is older - usually the older models are always smaller... That leaves you 81" (or 6' 9")

I'd measure how far behind your vehicle you need to stand and open the hatch, and then see what that would leave you in the front. Thinking that 4' in the back and 2' 9" in the front will be plenty? And that's to give you the most access to all routes around the vehicle, and ability to get into the back.

I am also thinking that you don't have any steps into your house which means that the 22' 8" x 22' 8" will all be usable, right?

SUV full size is about 191" almost 16' so you will be fine.

Thank you! I don't have a 4Runner now but was thinking of one in the future (or a Range Rover sport-my dream car). It sounds like I should be okay. No steps. Here's the plan.

Depends - do you want to store 'stuff' in it? My garage is 27 x 27, with an 18' door.

The two cars parked, are about 17' - this leaves me 5' on each side. I have a lot of shelves / tools / lawn mower / storage space.

Thanks Geoffrey. I was going to use the separate storage space to store things.

My garage is 21'x21' (though I don't know off the top of my head if that's inside or outside dimension - I'm guessing outside). It's not insulated, and has 2x4 walls.

It's cozy for our two vehicles - a Sienna minivan and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have 2' shelves along one side, which does cut out space for the cars, but those shelves are loaded with gardening tools and supplies, some camping gear, scrap lumber on top - plus the garbage can and lawn mower on that side of the garage.

DH pulls the van straight in, and I park at an angle (with the rear bumpers closer together) to allow myself room to get out of the car. It's a tight squeeze. 3 more feet would be heaven!

My last house had a garage that was a little over 21' deep. Inside dimension. At that time I had a long SUV i.e.: Suburban. I could fit it in and shut the garage door. It took every inch and I had to walk around the vehicle before shutting the garage door. A real pain.

I could not shut the garage door and unload groceries out of the back with the hatch open. Not fun in the winter.

Assuming your exterior dimensions include the walkway at the top of the garage, here's a rough approximation using graph paper (1 sq = 1 ft) and a 16' vehicle pulled straight in. I couldn't find an overhead pic with open doors, but you'll want to consider that if you have 2 vehicles side by side or want to open the back hatch with the garage door closed.

You guys are the best! I think I miscalculated the dimensions. It will be 23’4”x23’4”. I guess if I expand it, I can only go to the left, which will cut down on the size of the small bump out, or I can up towards the house, but that is not optimal either. There is a carport for a larger sized car. Maybe that should be okay?

Chicagoans, thank you very much. That really does look small. :(
