When do you normally winterize container raspberries? I still have green leaves on green stems. Or, the top part is green and the bottom part is woody. I'm trying to grow raspberry shortcake in containers at my north WI cabin (zone 3). If they are hardy to only zone 5, are they likely to survive a tough winter?

I don't :-) No need to in my climate - they just sit outside all winter.

In your climate, you will want to do something to protect them from cold before a hard freeze. What you want to avoid is the soil in the container and the plant roots freezing. You are in a much better position to judge when exactly you would need to be preparing for that eventuality.

All the more so since raspberries are quite drainage sensitive yours should be plunged into bark, sand or other well aerated material. That covers the whole pot. And not buried in ordinary ground, that may not be adequately aerated. This is a consideration even when the kinds of plants being handled aren't ones that demand excellent drainage - walls of all conventional plant containers are a barrier to air movement, except perhaps for clay pots.

Suggestions when to uncover?

Im here in se MI small area of zone 6b supposedly zone 5 all around me. I left mine outside on a bridge of all things figuring it would be a total loss. To my surprise it is comming back. Now if it can just make it through this up and down spring. Supposed to get an inch or so of snow tomorrow.

Uncover? How did you end up over wintering them? leaves? I guessing you're still a few months away from seeing if they survived. It also depends how old they were when ol man winter came.

Chicken fence with leaves won't stop a zone 3 winter sadly. Planting against a house would help.
