24 inch range and 18 inch DW: what are they like to use?

We used to have a mother-in-law apartment in our basement. We took out the kitchen for many years. Now the kids are heading off to college soon, my DH wants the apartment back. His main reason is to have life in the house when we travel for weeks at a time. I am not retired but my work schedule is flexible to take 6 to 8 weeks off at a time. (We will have no trouble renting it out to quality people. I don't want to discuss that here...)

The kitchen will be small. I am thinking of using 24 inch range and 18 inch DW. I will spend the money and get above average quality appliances even for a rental. If I can find a decent 24 inch induction range at a reasonable price, that is what I would use. Otherwise, I will buy a gas range.

For those of you that have used these small appliances, what are they like to use?

I will make sure that the oven can accommodate a standard Half sheet pan. To me that is the minimum necessary for a usable oven.

If it is between the counter space and standard size appliances, what would you chose?

I've had an 18" DW for 12 years now and really like it. It's just the two of us, it holds a lot, about 3 days worth of dishes. I can fit my frequently used 9 x 13 backing dish in it, no problem. Granted it won't hold larger mixing bowls but I'm ok with that. Seems I run it every 3 days, sometimes 2.

My range is 30" so I cannot address that but as long as it holds the standard sheet pan, as you are planning and there is a "landing area" next to it, sounds like it should be just fine.

I have an 18” dishwasher in our cabin in the mountains and a 20” range. Perfect for guests and everyone loves the little range.

It would depend on how big the apartment is and how many people it can hold or you want it to hold. I think there is a difference in needs between a single person and say, a couple with a baby.

For me, the appliance I use the most is the outdoor grill, even when we lived in the northeast.

I have a Bosch 18" 800 Plus and like it. I live alone and run it every 2 days or so.

We had a 24" range at our lake house. After 40 years, it finally died and I had a heck of a time finding a new one, so we ended up moving things around and getting a 30". I would have been just as happy to have another 24" if I could have found one that had even mediocre reviews. We don't have gas so all I looked at were electric. Maybe there are better built gas ones than electric.

We like our 18" dishwasher for our family of 3. I would not rent an apartment without a full size oven, but baking is one of my hobbies...I am not sure how much others use the oven....my MIL uses it as storage.

We rented a townhouse with an 18" dishwasher. We were a family of 4 and ran it twice a day most days. It was vastly superior to having no dishwasher! One factor that helped in the kitchen design was a large single sink. Anything that wouldn't fit in the small dishwasher was easily accommodated in the largish sink. I believe it was a single bowl 24" wide stainless steel sink. I've not used a smaller sized range, but have lived without an oven. We had a stovetop gas burner and brought in our own counter top convection oven. It was fine for the 6-12 months that we lived with that kitchen

Wanted 18" dishwasher, for my small kitchen, but found better quality, options & pricing with standard size. Not as many choices w/ 18".

18" DW is perfect for one person. Or two.

Would much prefer a 30" induction cooktop on top of a 24" singe wall oven. A microhood is a requirement where there is very little counter space. It's terrible for small kids and the very frail but fine for everyone else.

We have a 24” range and while I will be thrilled with a 36”, it is very functional when we cook for 2-3 people.

Not as functional for parties, Christmas baking, etc....as you can imagine.

I have a 24 inch range at our cabin. I have made full Thanksgiving dinners for years including a 15+ pound turkey. It is sometimes hard to find a decent size cookie sheet as some are a bit too wide. But mine is a bit older with coil burners. I was looking for a newer style and all that I look at (very little choice) are somewhat more shallow front to back inside than the one I have. And no induction that I found in Canada. So I guess I will just keep the one I have.

My dishwasher out there is 24 inch but the neighbour has an 18" and she entertains a lot, and seems to be OK with it.

I have a 24" induction cooktop and love it. Yes, it is "only" 3 burners, but that is plenty for me even when hosting Thanksgiving!

I've had multiple apartments with 24" ranges and no dishwasher. Never had a problem putting together a great meal on a 24" range (I was younger then, of course, and a lot less spoiled) and would have loved any size DW, even a counter top one. Lol!

I have a Bosch 18" and find it more than adequate for just me; I use it only about once or twice a week.

You will be happy with a Bosch dishwasher. It is quiet and does an excellent job. It also has a water softener system that helps with crystal clear glassware cleaning. It holds 8 place settings.

    Hi Kaismom,

We have a tiny NYC kitchen which is mad functional, we have the 18 inch Bosch DW and 24 inch gas Verona range, it's perfect for us.

The range is also convection, and has a 12,000 BTU wok burner, both is used constantly.

Our kitchen is heavily used and looks smart.

It's often a disaster when people demand unnecessary full sized appliances in small spaces, thus taking away precious inches of flat counter space.

@Janie, I'd love to see photos of your mad functional kitchen! I'm glad to hear that a tiny kitchen works so well.
