Should I get one LONG runner for my entry way, or 2 separate? Help!

Need to purchase a runner to cover up high traffic areas... just not sure what size.

Should I get one runner that is 3.5ft X 13 ft (which would just cover the walkway from the staircase to the back door) OR do I get a runner that is about 2.5 times that length and just have one long runner from the front door to right before the back door? I could also split them up into two.

I'm just worried that if I get one one longer runner that is 30+ft... it might look tacky.

Maybe if I split them up it wouldn't look too bad. (one runner for the front entryway, then space it about 5 ft before the other starts)

Input appreciated! I'm clueless when it comes to long entryways and runners!

You can do one long one, a short one for landing inside the door and then a longer one, or two long ones.Search hall runner here on Houzz to get ideas.

I like the idea of one long runner-One of your local carpet stores may actually "make'one for you. My Son needed a specific size rug and could not find it and had one made. It ended up being cheaper as well.

I would use two. I find it more interesting looking.

It depends on whether you want to emphasis how long the entry is. Usually the goal is to try to keep elements from seeming too extreme in width or length. With that in mind, I think I would keep the rug at the door. Get something as close tyo square as will fit the door space. Get a rug that demands attention, either through color or pattern or both. I would not do runners at all. One two or three the very shape of them will emphasis the extremely long hall.

Ok, I haven't yet decided whether I want to do one long or two separate (I'm leaning toward 2+)... but what are your thoughts on the patterns below?

I want something that is interesting but not too noisy. I was leaning toward something neutral. Do any of them look like they will go well? Do you have other suggestions? Right now I was just looking at amirarugs.com and garnethill.com.

    For pic #1 & 3, I would go with the ivory/natural color.

My favorites are in photos 1 and 3, in whichever color goes best with your interior.

I like the first one. Also, please consider the middle color of the first picture. Gray is wonderful for not showing much dirt in a high traffic area and it looks like the gray and tan would also look very nice in your space.

Ann- I agree. I've actually tried to incorporate grays throughout the house, so a gray rug would probably look nice. I'll do some cropping later this evening to see if the rug would look good in the area.

Another note, I do plan to paint a majority of the home eventually... the color right now is a bland builder's standard tan... which unfortunately has a yellow tone with the lighting. I will most likely go toward a warm gray color on most of the walls.

If your floors aren't completely level, a long, single rug will constantly shift. It will be a giant size pain to try and straighten it. I would definitely go with 2 or 3. Especially if you're going with a heavier wool rug. Love the grey one in the center of first picture. Also agree with repainting walls a warm light gray tone.

Thanks mforr- I'm hoping my floors are level... and with my luck getting a giant sized rug will not bring just one headache of constantly having to straighten... but another headache of having to deal with the builder to fix the floors! :) I'm going to continue to operate in the mode of "ignorance is bliss" and just hope that my new home is even...

... oh and forgot to add, I will be sticking to 2-3 rugs.

I don't like to hide wood floors, but if you do go runner.

I like the ones in first pic.
