From ugly turquoise retro hodgepodge bathroom to modern (in progress)

It all started two years ago when we moved into our mid century modern home. There it was, our ugly hall guest bathroom fully equipped with a turquoise tub and wall mounted matching turq toile. The floors were asbestos vinyl type speckled with gold and blue.

The wall paper was a deep green with an adorably awful border that featu ducks flying over a wooded lake. When we first moved in (2 years ago) we though 'hey, we can pull the wallpaper off easily' - so we did, and some wallpaper still remained in ugly shredded remnants because the job was much bigger than simply pulling off paper, what was left was a fuzzy backing on the wall that required expert precisio but we never dealt with it.

until now.

I was going for a contemporary modern scheme with a drop in tub, glass shower doors, large grey high gloss tiles, modern recess light, a floating teak wood vanity, and an actual white toilet, a square rainfall shower head, and an open Floating shelf closet. Simple, clean, modern.

Our new tub is 6 inches longer than the old one so the wall that shares the shower head and lineN closet needed to be torn down and moved back so we have less closet space but that's quite alright

Lots of new plumbing was done including on the shower, vanity, and the toilet had to be replumbed from the wall to the floor (This is a second story house).

It it took me like 5 hundred hours of internet search to find a proper tub and toilet (ones without any grooves) for easy cleaning.

the tile is mare blanco and is high gloss porcelain grey with natural veining from Home Depot

the shower head and accessories and the vanity is a 55in floating teak vanity from houzz

The tub is kohler

thanks for reading my bathroom progression story! I'm sure you're almost asleep by now.

The electrician finally came!!!

Kudos to your tile person, very well planned out. Thank you for adding all the photos "in progress". The reality of remodeling = you can't forgo the mess.

I know it's not advice, but it's still posted, unless you only go for ohhhs and ahhs? The reason that I think the vanity is too small, is because there is no counter space, and two people being at it at the same time is cramped ( this is from experience)

It has nothing to do with not understanding contemporary design...

I am sure you put thought into it and clearly like it, but to me it's just too much of the same tile in the whole space.

Zealart I totally get the counterspace thing but one of my biggest pet peeves is when my husband leaves out anything on the bathroom counter. I like my bathroom counter to have nothing on it. Once again my OCD clutter free brain takes over. So I'm hoping the lack of counter space will force my husband to put away his hair pomade and yucky face razor after he's done with them- like he should be doing! I'm trying to train him but even after 7yrs of marriage it's a work in progress.

The grouting is all done and it's starting to look like an actual bathroom you guys! There's still grout haze on the tile wall that needs to be cleaned but I can finally see my vanity (minus the drawer fronts). I guess I need to go order a mirror like yesterday. I was waiting until the vanity was in to figure out mirror dimensions. Its going to be frameless and run the length of the vanity with width a little over a foot above the vanity and below the ceiling. Unless anyone has any other ideas?

Angela, did you replace your soffit lighting with can lights? I see reflections in the last photos. May I ask how many lights you had installed? I'd appreciate it!

And I agree with the mirror choice even though I'm starting to dig these LED backlit versions.

Joe yes we did 3 (3 inch) dimmable and damp rated led recessed lights evenly spaced on the ceiling of our 96inch long bathroom. Plus we added one over the middle of the bathtub and added a separate switch for that one- because let's face it, sometimes a little less light in the shower can be a good thing when you don't want yourself all lit up. I purchased them at lowes for about $15 each. I decided against any other wall or pendant lighting because the modern contemporary design scheme didn't really lend itself to those types of lighting in my opinion. I wanted clean and simple.

Joe, yes I totally agree with those backlit versions. I was looking at them myself but I wonder what kind of electrical source those need. Plus I'm not sure if I want to look at my face with that much light on it lol!

Only 3, cool ... and good to know! I'm so lost when it comes to iighting.

I love where it's going. I have a very similar concept in mind for my master so I'm looking forward to seeing your project to completion!

    Thanks again!!

Sorry guys it's been a zero work week this week as we wait for the plumber to install the tub, shower head, toilets, and sink faucets which should be real soon. The custom mirror and glass shower door people are coming this Wednesday to measure and whatnot so that will get things going.

I've never had glass doors before so does anyone have any advice on the upkeep of them? I know they can get scummy quick so I know you guys have some tips and tricks. My one concern with sliding glass doors is if I'll have enough room to sit comfortably on the ledge of the outside tile ledge of the bathtub and wash my preschoolers hair and give her a bath. Anyone have any input on that?

We use glycerin soap or SoftSoap shower creme. Cuts way down on the soap scum. We used to use french-milled soap. Tons of scum. Hated to switch, but could not stand the extra cleanup.

Sooo I finally decided to put these drawers into the vanity because they were taking up space in our extra living room. So you'll notice that left drawer isn't closing. Well the freaking plumbing pipe is in the way. I'm really hoping it's an easy fix for our plumber or else I'm going to be super sad. He should be coming this week.

We have clear glass on our shower and use a squgee to get rid of the water on the glass and clean them once a week. No problem even husband squgees the glass.

We almost have a real bathroom now! We finally got the toilet and sinks plumbed right before thanksgiving. Just in time for our guests or else theyd have to use our master bathroom which was not ideal.

They installed the tub and tub fixtures today which is amazing (The tub still has some of the plastic around the ledges). I chose it because it didn't have any weird ledges that would catch scum or dust. It has super clean lines just like I wanted.

The finishings are still a work in progress obviously. The floating shelves need to be installed still and the trim around the ceiling need to be installed. Plus the old yellow ceiling painted white along with the back wall. The mirror will be installed soon as I had a custom mirror person come by last week to get measurements.

the bathroom feels a lot more spacious than I thought it would feel after they bumped the bathtub out like that. I'm loving it.

Nicely Done! Love the tile & tub.

    Kudos! The room looks fabulous!

I would love to know the total number of person-hours that all crafts worked on this room. I would also like to know the number of hours that you spent on this project.

Many people watch HGTV where they remodel a room, or even a whole house in 1/2 to 1 hour. Because of the "HGTV effect", a lot of people don't appreciate the time and money that goes into a remodeling project.

Armchairshopper, I couldn't tell you the exact number of hours other people worked on the bathroom but it's well over 40 and it's now over a month since my original post and it's still not finished but that's due to our contractor friend doing the work at his own convenience and doing us a favor. Our plumber has made at least 3 different trips over here at different stages (and he's still not done because the tub faucets didn't fit right so he's gotta come back here and correct it). Me personally spent at least 5 hours painting/sealing the grout lines (which I'm not done with yet) plus many trips to lowes/Home Depot. Not to mention the hours spent designing and finding the right materials.

I would love to know which toilet you ended up choosing. he skirted look is very nice; I have been doing a lot of research about toilets that flush well... lots of differing reviews.

Leslieap it's a Kohler 66in drop in tub. I ordered it online through lowes.

p.s. love the look of your updated bathroom especially the fix you did on the grout!

Susandan, originally we had a dual flush toilet that I purchased on two separate occasions from houzz but both times it arrived it ended up broken. So we decided to purchase and pick out from a local company so we did. Then we ended up Having to buy another and final toilet because the original one we picked out from the local company was over 29inches long and it would have been a bit too long for our somewhat narrow bathroom. So I decided to run down to the showroom and saw this one piece gerber toilet that was the right length at about 27 inches and was in stock and in my less than $400 price range. It might not seem like a lot but 2 inches really is. Plus it's really small and compact which I kind of liked. Who wants a big honkin toilet to look at anyways. And the skirted look was exactly what I wanted. Nobody wants to look at a toilet with some weird colon shape on the side. It's a not a fun place to clean I'll tell ya.

It's a gerber avalanche one piece

If money was no object I would have installed a duravit toilet with the tank inside the wall- but after all my toilet trouble it might have been cheaper anyways to go with my dream toilet. Oh well

is it the 1.28 single flush... I am trying to find a single flush with 1.6 flush as my step daughter has the lower volume flush (Toto) and it doesn't clean very well. I checked into wall hung toilets too, but can't use one if placed on an outside wall in cold climate where we live.!

Hi Angela. I am definitely following your post and look forward to all your information and pics. We are just in the beginning of our bathroom renovation. I did post in Design Dilemna: Start up of a Master Bathroom. Our tastes are very similar. Currently, we have just agreed on the window, my hubby is installing. He just asked what type of flooring I wanted as he is busting out the old tile. Honestly, I have not even looked at flooring as of yet. Since all items need to co-ordinate, I better get busy. I love your bathroom vanity from Houzz! The rest of our house is decorated is in a contemporary/modern design so following suit. Thank you as this posting is a wealth of information for me!

We finally have a mirror you guys. It actually looks like a real bathroom now. The mirror is held on by invisible 'L' brackets so it floats seemlessly off the wall. I think if I had to do it over again I'd go a little more narrow with the mirror just for esthetics but it's fine. I can reach all the way to the top to clean it no problem. This bathroom remodel is moving at a snails pace. The back wall, ceiling, and closet area have been textured and painted. Our contractor friend textured last week and my husband and I tag teamed and spent the better half of last Saturday morning priming for white paint and finishings. It's so close.

I just love how clean it feels though. I remember before going into this bathroom and I was just disgusted when I looked around and saw all the old crumbly characteristics of the vintage bathroom. Can I tell you that my 4 year old daughter has been using her baby bathtub for all this time because I didn't like her sitting in that old yucky tub. No matter how clean it was, it didn't look clean. My OCD brain is finally relieved and my daughter can bathe appropriately now!

Oh and don't judge my yucky door knob. I bought another one but have yet to install it myself. The door also needs a fresh coat of white paint. I've been a bit busy with work, a small child, and the holidays.

I also plan to paint the grout on the mirrored wall (like I did with the shower and floor area) so that it blends in with the tile. It's 'on the list' as I like to say.

Great job! Thanks for sharing all the pictures. (I'm SO glad you didn't have the tile laid in a 1/3 offset pattern; but since you say you have an OCD brain you're probably like me and can only see a bunch of mini staircases all over the place!) I hope you have time to share any pics you may take with towels, rug, etc. Enjoy your new bath!

Tc, im an amateur designer, I almost staggered the tiles but I did so much image researching on modern contemporary design that I just knew it didn't feel right to do that. You should see the master bathroom I designed over a year ago. It's not exactly what my taste is now. It's interesting how much my design mind can evolve over the course of a year. But I'm so glad it did. When you know better, you do better.

Joe, I'm my worst critic so a dirty old gold doorknob in a sparkling new bathroom just screams at me to change it. But I'm glad nobody else takes my bathroom as seriously as I do. Although you know if I didn't mention that doorknob then some internet troll would have come out of nowhere and tore into me! But golly gee, I have so many presents to wrap at the moment that changing a doorknob does not sound like my idea of fun right now.

Presents? Men's Medium, size 9 shoe. LOL

And I know exactly what you mean! If someone says drapes anywhere on this site, you can be sure this image is forthcoming!

I laughed at your comment about spending 500 hours online looking for items for your remodel. I do the same and if I spent half of the internet time actually doing some of the projects I have, I'd be much further along! :) I just love that larger tile that you have selected and your bathroom will be durable and beautiful for many years to come.
