Desperately trying to find light fixture like this one

Hi folks,

Don't mind me.

I'm trying to trying to replace a light fixture in my kitchen which is
flush with the ceiling. When this light fixture is on it exposes the
imperfections on the ceiling.

I went back to the electrical showroom where I bought my fixtures. I
asked them what kind of kitchen light I could use, to replace my current
one, so that the ceiling imperfections could not be seen.

Also, I wanted the new light fixture to be able to highlight my kitchen
island. This way, if I was cutting up onions or eating by the island I
would have adequate and nice lighting. The showroom person recommended
the fixture in the attached photo that looks like a drum (it's the
fixture with the letter "G" next to it or the the one that's on).

1) If the showroom guy is correct, this fixture will focus light in a downward fashion and not on the ceiling. Am I correct?

2) What is this type of light fixture called (if it has a name)? I would
like to see whether there are more online options for this type of
fixture.

3) If this fixture can use an LED bulb then it would really be cool!

4) I already have 5 recessed lights in the kitchen (over the oven, sink,
fridge, pantry entrance, and entrance to living room). But I thought it
would be great to have the option of turning off all the recessed
lights and just having the light over the kitchen island on. This way, I
can have a romantic dinner with a babe or just have lighting when
preparing to cook a meal.

(1) Yep, it directs light down.

(2) Flush mount or surface mount. I don't know if there is anything more specific than that.

(3) I'm sure you can put LED bulbs in it. I don't think there are any lights that you can't use LED bulbs in instead of incandescent. You just have to make sure that the LED bulb is rated for an enclosed fixture.

(4) That's not a question. Good luck with your 'babes'.

Looks like a theater spotlight. Sounds like that's what you are looking for.

What's wrong with going back to the electrical showroom?

In rooms where ceilings are of normal height, I'm not a big fan of recessed cans and other downlights. Surface mount luminaires that reflect light off the ceiling have an advantage over them when it comes to the evenness of the room's lighting.

You don't get this indirect lighting advantage with the type of fixture you're thinking of, either. So you need more of them to get good task lighting.

I understand your concern about exposing the ceiling's imperfections. But how many of your guests will actually look up to notice them? (That is, unless they end up horizontal for some reason. :-)

That said, I think I remember seeing an LED luminarire similar to what you're asking for at one of the big box stores recently (either the orange one or the blue one). IIRC, it had a brushed nickel ring maybe 3" high with a translucent lens in the bottom. You might check their websites.

You might also find an LED disk light to your liking. That's a luminaire that mounts in a conventional ceiling box, but looks a lot like a recessed can. I've used a few of them where I had low ceilings. They're OK.
