Need help on my living room. Blank Slate!

Hi,

I'm redoing my living room including the fireplace. The only thing that is staying is the baby grand piano.

I know a lot of people don't like sectional couches but I love them. They are so cozy and can fit everyone. I'm wondering how big I should get and if I should have the corner facing the french door by the foyer or by the den. Our flow of traffic is through the den but then will the back of the sectional look unwelcoming if facing the foyer/piano side of the room?

Thanks!!

The French doors at the two ends of the room could be removed to make room. If you have to allow for them to open you'll have less space for the sectional. I would float it in front of the FP. You need a large piece of casegoods or a long console table and big art gallery opposite the fireplace as a visual counterbalance to it, and you need to leave walk space behind that wing of the sectional so both doorways can be accessed. Subtract depth of the casegoods (12-18" for a console, secretary or bookshelves) and the width of the walkway (36" or a bit less may work) and a small passage (18-24") between the sectional and the fireplace hearth so you can squeeze in from there. That should tell you what length the sectional can be. I estimate about 7 feet for the wing perpendicular to the FP and as much as 9 feet for the section facing the FP. If you can get a reversible chaise sofa you'll have more options. It won't be as large as a full sectional, but it will be more conversation friendly when you have guests because you can add a pair of chairs to the room. Gus Modern makes a nice apartment sized one.

Thanks for the feedback. Just to clarify, you think a console table/sofa table behind the sectional and then also a path behind the table so that traffic can pass through? If I get an L shape sectional, which side do you think should the couch open up to? Do you think it matters? I like the idea of art behind the couch. I hadn't thought of that yet. I'm not sure what a reversible chaise is.

A reversible chaise can be flipped from right to left (very handy.) I was envisioning a piece of furniture on the wall with art above as a visual counterbalance to the visual heft of the fireplace. Here are a few ideas.

I like that. They may help me figure out the measurements of the couch. Any thoughts on which way the couch should open or do you think it doesn't matter?

Id like one wing of it to face the piano and the other face the fireplace. If you have a chaise with it, you may enjoy the chaise closer to the fire in winter for the view in summer. Another suggestion: get a round upholstered hassock to slip under the piano. It can be pulled out for additional seating.
