What color should the China cabinet be painted?

Cream, gray or blue? I purchased a beautiful french provincial China cabinet to have it professionally painted, but I cannot decide on the right color. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Beautiful rooms! I would use blue. But, I really like the darker blue on the cabinet below. The blue you chose looks a little pale.

BM Hale Navy or Gentlemans Gray would look nice if you want darker.

will they be doing a glossy, or a chalk paint distressed look?

If doing chalk paint, ASCP in Aubusson and Napoleonic Blue would be a good choice

this one I did is Old Ochre,,,,if you want an off white

I like the various shades of blue, too. I love how Beth's piece came out- such a pretty color. I like the darker blue above, too. Your walls look gray, I would want some contrast between walls and cabinet, so gray would be out for me. Good luck!

I would not do a blue on a piece of wood furniture. What if you change other decor over time...then it is BLUE. I would choose a more neutral tone. Maybe an off white or something that actually ties into something you already have, maybe something like your chair upholstery color. I would also change out the hardware on it to be more contemporary (straight-lined and with some bulk) like your table & chairs. If you are actually looking for some blue, I would choose a large rug with a very large pattern for that room and have a little blue in it.

Thank you for your input! It’s Normandy by Benjamin Moore. It could have been the lighting. It’s not pale it has black, blue in it.

The lady already purchased the Normandy paint but I’m sort of having second thoughts!!

It’s more of a slate blueish gray color. Do you still love ?

Yas D You are right it was the lighting in your pic. Your blue is dark enough. I would love to see it when it is competed!

I forgot to mention or show the other side of the dining room space. Where the windows are original dark wood trimmings around the windows and stained glass window.

Another idea is to go with cream (combination with dark and light) that would match to your chairs.

Hi Beth. If it’s painted Normandy, the inside will not be blue but a neutral color such as the color of the walls which is agreeable gray. Or she can use a linen color instead. Thanks for your input!

Cream would just disappear into the other decor. I think some shade of blue will be a real winner.

Follow up question-will the blue shade make the dining room feel closed in / or more of just a pop of color? Where as the lighter shade would make it feel more airy? Thoughts?

I actually think a darker stain to match the dining table would be best. It would add contrast against the lighter colored wall, and would add a contrasting backdrop for lighter colored china or pottery. It would also balance out the room a bit, since you have dark trim on the other side. A dark stain would be classy, elegant, and would be a timeless neutral to fit with any future redecorating. If you want a pop of color, painting the inside of the cabinets, painting the shelves blue, or wallpapering behind the shelves would be a nice touch.

Maybe something like this, only with blue or cream for the accent color instead of red:

If you have your heart set on painting the whole thing a color, then I vote a dark blue to contrast the wall behind it and balance the room.

Yas, the blue you picked will be fine. the color won't make things seem more closed in, but that large piece might. have you measured out the space or put something similar in dimension in the place to see? Those are large pieces. I actually have the bottom portion that I'm painting, and is similar to yours.

this will be a media cabinet when done. I still have to do a glossy lacquer top coat.

if it helps, this is 58" long and about 17" deep. have you taped off your spot to see if it will work?

Thank you all!! Greatly appreciate the time you took out of your day to respond. :) extremely helpful. Thank you!

Beth, oh yeah! Very similar. Nice job! Beautiful piece. The depth is 14” Then the height is 7'1" and the length is 5'10". There will be ample space on the left and right side of walls as well as the height.

are you sure it's only 14"? that's just for the top piece. I believe it sits further back on the bottom piece, which should be in the 17" range.

Hi Beth, I don’t have the piece at home. But the buyer I purchased it from said it’s 14” and I measured the top when I picked it up.

i bet she measured the bottom portion underneath the actual overhang. because, yes, mine is the same. but the top hangs over the edge, and it juts out in the middle part. I measured the largest, deepest part. dead center on the top all the way out to the overhang. that's at least 3" over the 14" if you measure down below on the side. just sayin'...want you to be prepared. I've done dozens of these.

Good point. Thank you! The lady started painting one area so I can see it today after work. I really hope I love it. I have a feeling it’s going to be a nice statement piece. Originally I gravitated towards cream/off white color (more neutral)

but changed my mind so the blue would be a pop of color in the dining room. Hope I love the blue on the China cabinet.

The color looks different due to the fluorescent lighting in her shop. However, she said it does match the swatch I provided her. I’ll see it in person tonight. :)

I like the color. will she be waxing it for you as well? you could always do a dark wax to tone it down farther if necessary. but it should be fine.

She will be priming it and painting it with two coats as well as distressing it a little to highlight the details.

Love the idea of the blue. I think you will be very happy.

I am more contemporary in style and I also bought a bottom portion of a hutch and we took 3 inches off the back, added 4 inches to the hight and painted it shiny cherry red. Puts a smile on my face every time I walk by it. Hopefully yours will for you too!

Beth H, that is media cabinet is coming out great.

thank you wood team. very kind of you to say so. the inner cabinet is done in gold. the outside will be a modern, glossy finish,,,if I ever get around to doing the touch up on it! It's all done otherwise.

Thank you woodteam for your input. The cherry red sounds lovely. I do believe that the blue will add character and dimension to the opposite side of the dining room space. Thank You everyone for taking the time to respond. I’ll post the final product. Should have it within two weeks or less!

Here’s the finished product! Couldn’t be happier to have a customized painted china cabinet that really stands out in my dining room. The inside is distressed. Love it! Thank you everyone for your input.
