Tiling a "backsplash" on a non-working kitchen wall. Yay or nay?

So we tiled the backsplash area on my "working" kitchen wall last weekend. No grout yet but I love the way it looks. I had planned to also tile the opposite side, even thought that side is not a working side. But now I am wondering if that's a silly thing to do. No food prep takes place there other than the microwave. There is the fridge, and the built-in desk/computer area.

This is the part that I really work in, and that is the new backsplash. (Excuse the mess - I am still working on getting the tile ready for grout.)

The opposite wall:

I had painted before the counters were in, just to not look at the bare wall, so that wall has some paint, but it is by no means complete. Either I decide to just go with the paint, (which is the same as the far end kitchen wall and the dining room), or I tile to match the opposing wall. By the way, that little quartz splash on the side was done because the fabricator insisted - I really didn't think it was needed. In any event, if I tiled, it would be on the back wall only, so you really could not even see it behind the MW.

What would you do? Somehow I assumed that this would be the "normal" thing to do, but now I am wondering why I thought that. Tile is already bought, but I can take it back so that isn't an issue.

Depends. I think it’s fine either way. If you really love your tile, go for it. If you’re looking to be done, be done. Well done so far!

Thanks - I'm not "looking to be done", the work really doesn't matter to me, it's not much work to do that other wall really. My BF now, he would jump for joy if I said "Oh never mind" LOL.

Either is fine. The tile job (and the whole kitchen, really) looks great. Maybe you should stop tiling YOUR walls and come do MINE! :)

I think you should tile that side too. Can I ask what tile you're using? I really like it!

I don't think you have to but I think it would look nice! This is what we have not a great pic but you get the gist.

I vote for tiling it too for a completed, cohesive look.

I agree with luckyblueeye- I think you should tile it.

Have you thought about placing a custom cork board above the desk (since you have an outlet in the center) and then tile behind those areas that are counter height?

I would go ahead & tile it if it were in my home.

Cool- thank you so much for your thoughts on this! I was really second-guessing myself on it!!! Full steam ahead with the tile. :-)

Fori is extremely displeased, haha. I would gladly help you if I could, but I have so much to learn yet! I just need to get the BF to let me have a go at the wet saw. I think I would totally enjoy the whole tile cutting process - I have enough "artsy-craftsy" in me that it's kinda right up my alley.

rebunky, I totally get it. I have SO many projects that are on my to-do list. *sigh* Never enough time.

Yanno, it's funny, back when I started this whole update project (not a remodel - nothing so grand as what you all are doing!) I was taking trash out one night and a neighbor stopped by to chat. I told her I was painting my cabinets and she mentioned that she had been working on her kitchen for a year. And I remember thinking..."A year?!? What the heck? She's retired what is taking her so long??"

HAHAHAHA!!! I was clueless. A noob.

I am terrible at visualizing changes - I have to see pics of how it could look. And even then, I am terrible at making a decision. So I am very thankful for those here have more experience and a better "eye" that I do.

The tile is from Lowe's. Bestview Grey\Linen Polished Glass wall tile, 3x12. It's identical to a glass tile from The Tile Shop, but the color is a good "medium" gray, which The Tile Shop did not have. Plus it was less expensive, so bonus!

Oh one more question? The little quartz splash piece to the right of the MW. Remove it? I’m thinking yes. Just seems like it would be a cleaner look with just the tile on the back.

Tile is a great way to add style, whether it's a 'working' wall or not! If you love the tile, carrying it throughout is an awesome idea.

As for the small quartz piece, if spills won't be common on that counter, we'd say take it out. especially if you decide to do the backsplash.

I agree with your instincts, Chess, I'd remove the little backsplash for a cleaner look. But you already know what most will say on that, dontcha ; - )

I opted to tile the coffee bar section on the opposite side of my kitchen. Even though it had the same countertop and base cabinets as the kitchen, it didn't feel tied in well without backsplash tile. HTH

mtnmom9 Here is a closeup of the tile. This part is all cleaned for grout.
