Need help picking out rugs for my Great Room

last modified: 8 years ago

Reposting this question in a different form, since I've had more time to think about what I like.

Im trying to decorate my Great Room/Living Area with no success, so I thought I would focus on only rugs. In the pics I am posting I will be removing the current area rug and the red chair so I will have more of a blank slate.

I love orientals and I love the color red. Everything I look at keeps going back to that. Mixing solids with the orientals is ok too, but I'm drawn to orientals with the primary color red. I like the ones with black in them too. I've looked online and in store so much that I honestly can't pick out or put anything together!

It's one big space that doesn't have a foyer, the front door opens into it, so I'm hoping rugs will kind of break the area up.

I appreciate any and all advice and any previous ideas. Thought I would post and hopefully find what I'm looking for and get it ordered. I have absolutely no decorationing style/sense so please help. Thanks!

edit. Sorry for the double pic

Since there are a gazillion rugs available, traditional and red tones, it's very hard to suggest specific ones. We probably all have our favorite styles. Also, not knowing your budget or the size you need, limits suggestions, too. Could you post that info?

I'm not sure how you'd feel about trying to incorporate red or burgundy as a secondary color in your rug. The couch and loveseat are so large and dark that it seems everything might kind of muddle together, as red toned rugs are often dark, too. Some would even let you keep your red chair.

You talk of "rugs" and mixing solid with an oriental, but where will you put the second rug in this room? By the door or is there an adjoining room not shown?

These caught my eye - all from esale rugs, but they aren't the predominately red/burgundy that you favor. I thought they'd brighten your space and all have some red:

I really like the ones Oly posted. I think my favorite is the first one but they all are really nice.

havingfun, the last two rugs you posted have really caught my eye. Can you please tell me where you found them?

Thank you so much Olychick for the help. I really want to get something ordered as the stores here have nothing. I took a few more pics for a better view of the room. I'd like to keep my budget under $1000, but at this point if I saw the perfect ones I would go over. My current rug is prob 10x12 or 11x13. The entryway is where I'm looking for one that coordinates. I was thinking a runner there. The other pic is of the hallway off the room, so maybe a runner there. I'm not a fan of blue, but I do like the 3rd one! Hope this info helps, as I'm desperate to find something and move on to curtains etc.

Did you try ordering any of the rugs that were suggested in your previous thread?

d_gw - To be honest, they just weren't me. I'm not a huge fan of blue, even though they were pretty. The more I thought about it I decided to look for what I like and that's orientals. I love reds. I can put the red chair somewhere else, so as not to clash with a rug. I thought if I posted just focusing on rugs, versus the whole decor, I would have a better chance of finding the right ones. I've seen mixed orientals and I like the look. I just can't vision them in the room.

Personally, I think the brown leather is more of a challenge with a very red rug than the red chair! Maybe you could find something brighter in the large rug and bring in more of the red in the entry rug. If you went with something like the one above you sorta like, you could do a runner like this. I'd wait on a 3rd rug if your budget is $1k, that's a lot of rugs for that amount, in an Oriental style.

Oh wow, I love those together.. Do you have the names of the rugs on Esalerugs site?

uh oh, I'll try to find them again! might be later or tomorrow, though.

eta: Okay, I took a minute to look for the large one. I was courtesy shopping last night and didn't know your size or budget, so just tried to find something that I thought might work with your furniture and had some red, but would be bright in your space...a long explanation for why this is likely too expensive :-) But if you like the style, search for isfahan persian rug. They have many.

    eta: here's the runner

How about something more tribal that has terracotta red, blue and beige, like this? It would liven up the sofas, on which I'd try to find colorful pillows that go with the rug.

Another tribal rug but with a more modern feel. Look at esalerugs under the color red. These are polypropylene which are easy to clean and wear well.
