A battle over hydroponics shows that the USDA organic certification program has always been about money. - The National Organic Standards Board, which advises the USDA on labeling rules, voted 8–7 to continue allowing hydroponic and aquaponic certification, dealing a blow to the dirt-firsters.
in the wake of the decision, some farmers have even threatened to leave the government-regulated program.

Some people, working with the Rodale Institute, have decided to walk away from the USDA program for just those reasons and begin a regenerative farming program to replace it.
