Childhood bedroom refresh for late 20s female

Hi all,

I've just bought my first home but will go live with my parents for another year or so to get ahead. I'd like to update my childhood bedroom by decluttering and turning it in to something more suitable to a 'mature' adult and give it at refresh.

Happy to get rid of the bookcase. Walls are cream/eggshell and there is timber framing on the doors and window. Carpet has hint of rose. Wishfully i'd like to get a double bed (still has a single) but the room is 2.7 (w) x 3.5(L) metres with a wardrobe at one end and double sliding doors to a balcony at the other - this makes it tricky to fit. I would have to 'chop the room in half' and go across the centre leaving about 50cm walking space.

Any ideas welcome!

I need more info- For example, are you willing to replace the carpet? What are the dimensions of the dresser? Can you block off the balcony door? From first glance I would say put up some nice drapes over the balcony door and center your bed on that wall, hopefully giving you room for a bigger bed, then place the dresser on the wall right next to the closet door. Then paint the walls a nice soft color- depending on whether or not the carpet stays or not would determine what color I would suggest for the walls. Hope this helps- good luck!

    Hi Mary,

I'd love to replace the carpet but it's my parents house - they don't want me ripping up their carpet but are okay for me to repaint.

    Dresser: 90(length) x 110 (height) x 37 (depth)cm

I'd prefer not to block the balcony door and sleep with my head at that end, because in summer (Australia) I'd miss any breeze coming in during the night - there's no AC in this house. Also have a bit of a paranoia about having my head so close to balcony door and spiders :D

So repainting and furnishings are probably the only thing I can play with

Hi... In a small room, you might want to repeat simply what you have: soft cream and rosy beige [of carpeting] --- do you like those colors, nicely mixed in art or fabrics?

Hi @Everdebs, thank you. I didn't think to accent the pink as to me the pinks reminds me of young girl more than mature adult, but I like the cool greys in the ideas you posted and maybe that will help offset the rose/sand carpet.

Kat, I really don't know - are there stores Ikea and Home Goods near you?

Talking -- copper-y could repeat your wood tones.... question is do you like earth tones basically?

yes we have Ikea! And similar smaller stores to home goods. Yes the carpet is a problem.. perhaps I'll look at big rugs! yes earth tones are fine, i like neutrals.. clean shapes/simple styles

If you about matched current walls, then maybe first view into room could be bit of pattern, or color on patio doors? Neutral bedding with pretty pillow. From iEnjoyHome.

If curtains aren't a bit striking to see, maybe the rug... this is $140.

Over 200 people love these room darkening in many colors. $31 for each 52" panel.

ok well the rug sample you showed us look more like a coral than a pink but either shade will go beautifully with soft grays or creams. I would go for a more sophisticated look. I would do soft silvery grays on the walls and window treatments and add a pop of color with the art and pillows and accessories.

I would buy a new more adult dresser- something in a rich brown finish.

I don't understand. You "bought" the house. Get ahead of what? Who is paying the expenses now? The owners have delayed , are holding the mortgage?

Clean the room of junk, buy some inexpensive bed in a bag for the bed, and begin the SAVINGS bank for real. Its 365 days. You'll live. Think of it as extended college dorm. Sort of is, right? You will want every single nickel beyond what you contribute for the groceries at the parents.......for your new house. Not your "old room"

Declutter and pack up anything you won't need for a year but want to take with you. Ask your parents if they want to buy new balcony curtains now, after you leave, or not at all. If you want to buy new curtains as a gift to them, ask if they prefer white or off white.

→ carpet: large area rug with colours/patterns as inspiration for the rest of the room
→ bed: other sizes won't work well. Keep the single, use pillows to make it a day-bed.
Keep it neat, get new bedding (as with rug, design the room around it) and a few good throw pillows
→ dresser & shelves: declutter, i.e. remove everything, decide on a few items that will be visible, replace only those visibly. Get a larger, horizontally mounted mirror
→ stuff on the walls: remove it all. If you want some of it there still, reorganise and frame and mount it properly, in a better location
→ windows: open the curtains fully to the side, with no ties. Get curtains over the smaller window too
→ other: get art, get a framed full length mirror, consider sconces and the current ceiling light, which we can't see, declutter everywhere, door hook, visible waste bin, corner at the foot of the bed
→ walls: after the rest, look at paint and wallpaper

I thought some inspiration photos might be helpful. For a small room and accepting your beige/rose carpet i would consider doing a layered look using white, blush, some beige, some peach or coral and navy blue accents if you want some contrast. Keep the palette soft and calming and even throw in some bits of metal. Paint bed white or white wash it and get pillows to make it sofa like for daytime. But nail down your basic color palette first. Personally, i would avoid grays. Depressing color.

Your carpet looks quite peachy on my monitor. I would paint the furniture black and the walls beige like this carpet, since your peachy/pink color is on the floor.

    Another black and peach bedroom.

Great photos decoenthusiaste Fun and has given me an idea for a bed I have! Thanks!

OP - I assume your plan is to save money by renting out your house for a year, then move into it. Yes?

If that's it, I wouldn't buy a darned thing for your bedroom that can't go with you to the new house. Drapes, bed, dresser, rug, art, mirror, whatever, should all be things you will take with you. By all means declutter, paint (paint is cheap) and maybe buy a better dresser, but for the rest - just camp out in the room for a year.

"If that's it, I wouldn't buy a darned thing for your bedroom that can't go with you to the new house"

My thoughts exactly!! If you purchase anything new, make sure it will transition well into your new home. THAT'S where your focus really needs to be directed.....you can put up with anything for another year.

"I didn't think to accent the pink as to me the pink reminds me of young girl"
I agree op. The same for peach.

@deco. It won’t be til after holidays, but I will post if it works out! I could go white too! Lol
  • 7 years ago

Thanks all! I bought some whiteish curtains yesterday (heat blockout ones.. desperately needed as it’s almost summer in Australia) and am thinking to repaint a very light soft greyish colour. Even tho a double bed will be tight I think a low one without bed ends or just a bed head may still work .. undecided on colour but minimalist in style. I’ll put it closer to the balcony door so there’s ample walking space in front of my wardrobe and when you walk in to the room. Well at least that’s my idea at the moment... may still change!

don't just work with the bed dimensions. bedding adds a significant amount. Look at 3/4 beds too, though I think a single works best here.
paint comes last. absolutely last, decide on everything else first. There are infinite choices in paint, so match that up to the rest
  • 7 years ago

OP - I'll go back to what I said earlier. If there's a space for a double bed in your future home, fine but otherwise, don't spend the money on something you won't use.

Yes there will be room for a double bed, I can take it with me or my parents will pay me back for it, I can sell it again. Double beds from ikea, or community sites like ebay or Gumtree are cheap and I’m fine with a second hand bed frame. Lots of apartment users sell they r furniture near-new so there’s plenty of cheap options

Hi all, a little update to share!

Room has been repainted in Dulux Lexicon grey, new curtains are in and bookshelf gone, as much clutter gone too.

I spent $60 on paint, $50 on curtains and earned $160 selling the bookcase and selling old clothes on ebay to put towards a new ( read:second hand) bed frame. I can put the big tea chest that’s in the photos in our basement giving more room if I wish, so I can get a double bed. So far pretty happy with my budgeting efforts.

I’ve really been astounded by the volume of contributions that helped me get to this point so THANKYOU!!

Question: what bed and chest of drawers to get? would you go Grey, white , or dark stain timber?

Again: "paint comes last. absolutely last, decide on everything else first. There are infinite choices in paint, so match that up to the rest"

But at least you've chosen a neutral.

The room looks far better with the busyness gone and new curtains. Rather live with it as is. Get a throw, some pillows, etc for some colour. If you but furniture, it may not work withh your next place.

Thanks Najeebah, I see where you’re coming from. My parents did want to help pick the colour (their house!) so despite what furniture I pick we had to compromise on the paint work. I’m fine with that and like the colour.

The bed has to go... probably can’t tell in photos but it’s bowed and broken leg on one end I’ve discovered. Time to replace.

Back to my original question, any colour suggestion for the bed is welcome.

Grey, white, and dark stained timber are all neutrals. But I'd advise white as it's the most versatile. Should your next house have wood or laminate floors, skirtings, etc, grey and other stains, though also relatively versatile, might clash. White is safe. And not too bold as a dark stain might be in a small space.
