Stuck in the Dinning Room

I recently "updated" my 25 year old dinning room, I changed the chandelier, replaced the china cabinet with a server and removed the area rug. It still feels like the room is missing something. The wall over the server has one large canvas picture which feels too stark, also wondering if I need a new area rug and if I should update the drapes. I'm stuck please help!!!

this is the updated chandelier? yes, the drapes need to be unfussed. simple panels on rings will do you fine. raise the rod to be closer to the crown. no frou frou.

I agree with above. The drapes and table cloth really age the room.

Keep your art in keeping with the style of the furnishings and the room....traditional....not mod.

Yes, remove the cloth, and no canvas. It looks too modern for your beautiful traditional room. I would do botanicals or maybe plates on the wall. If you can splurge, recovering your chairs in a more lively fabric, like a classic stripe, would be great. Or I might look on Craig's list for less fussy chairs. Ditto to curtain suggestions above. I love the wall color.

Thank you all especially Vistas Interior Design! I thought it might be possible to salvage a few items and not have to purchase an entirely new dinning room set. However I'm finding this way is much harder to pull together a cohesive looking room! I'm not sure what style I'm going for just not modern as the rest of my house is more traditional/transitional I'd say. Truth be told, the reason I cover the table is it is a Lexington blonde wood (circa 1994) see below. While I could certainly change the drapes and canvas I'm wondering if I should just start from scratch?

    A few suggestions

Change out the drapery panels so your room will appear taller.

Add coordinated framed art on either side of the windows.

Nothing beats a plain white linen tablecloth. This colored one doesn't look quite right for the room, and I would only use when serving.

Add buffet lamps to the sideboard for additional light in the room.

The mirror between the two sconces should be taller and wider.

Thank you so much BeverlyFLA Designer, I love your ideas :)

Any suggestions on a drapery color?

I'd pick a drapery color that is similar in tone with the upholstery on the chairs but plain, not a pattern. I'm sorry, but perhaps you should consider a new table, and in that case no tablecloth, but instead a beautiful carpet.

I'd start out by removing the valance entirely. I don't know that you have to replace the curtain panels entirely, though -- I can't see the pattern well enough. If you do, I'd consider either plain linen (Ikea has some nice, inexpensive linen panels in longer lengths, in white, natural, blue, or gray) or block print.

I like the floral art over the server. I'd group whatever you have on top of the server together on large tray, to look more purposeful and less disparate. I don't know that you need that small table on the opposite wall, especially if it's just holding a few decorative items. Can you hang that larger mirror that's on the floor in place of the smaller mirror?

I understand your need/desire for a tablecloth. Something in block print would be nice. It's been popular again for a few years now, but it's also classic and traditional,

Do you know Maura Endres' Instagram -- she sets a beautiful table, with block print tablecloths and napkins, wicker chargers, etc.

And for the chairs, plain slipcovers, either white or linen, whatever goes best with whatever curtains and tablecloth you decide on,

Between the chandelier, valance, and furniture, there do seem to be a lot of frilly curlicues. I'd minimize/eliminate as many as possible for a more updated look. And I don't think you need a runner and a tablecloth : ) .

I think I'd prefer to find a new dinning set and start from scratch. So working with the wall color and maybe keeping the server does anyone have suggestions for a nice midline not too formal traditional set. The room opens to my kitchen if this helps get a feel. TIA

I'd first pull down the valance to see if that is enough of a change for you. I think you will be surprised by how the room freshens up. If you need more change, you've received great suggestions above.

If you still like the shape of your table, I would check to see how much it would be to make the stain a bit darker.

Thank you that is a good suggestion, my husband has been saying that and I do like the table shape... We are empty nesters with three in college so spending a lot on this project didn't seem warranted especially because we may not be in this house too much longer.

You could probably stain the top of the table and leave the legs as is.

susan, a fresh looking dining room will net you a better sale price. its money well spent for you.

we are empty nesters also, but the hordes returning at holidays are increasing, with grandchildren. i bought a nice new dining table last year but got it with a lot of leaves so that now it opens, but if we move in a few years it will be small enough to fit in a smaller home.

So working with the wall color and maybe keeping the server does anyone have suggestions for a nice midline not too formal traditional set.

What exactly is the wall color? It's not too easy to tell from the photographs, plus you have the problem where colors look different on different screens. I can't tell what the curtain fabric is either.

I think the problem in the room isn't cost (midline vs. more expense) or casual vs. formal. It's the ornate look, with the curved table legs, curved chair backs, etc. which, while will always have its fans and in some regions more than others, tends to read as less than classic and stylish. You can get a table and chairs, or cover the chairs you have, for not a lot of money and still achieve a formal, $$$ look.

If you do opt to replace the table rather than stain it, which I would try first, I wouldn't get a set. Part of the problem in the room is the "matchy-matchy" aspect, which is no longer current whether it's in a dining room or a bedroom.

The wall color is BM taos taupe and the drapes are gold on gold with a scroll pattern which I agree is too fussy. I tend to go with mostly neutral tones, don't care for loud colors however I do think I need to add a color into the mix here.. any thoughts?

Something neutral for drapery panels could work to brighten the room a bit.

Susan, with the Taos Taupe, you could add just about any color. If you want color without being too colorful : ) , you could use darker blue, or a mossy or a dark green, even a dark purple.

If you have an Ikea nearby, take a look at their Ikea 100 percent linen curtains. Alternately, take a look at the curtains at Ballard Designs and Pottery Barn.

Thank you for all the great ideas/corrections, I think I have a clearer vision of what I need to do and will continue with my quest to fix what I have and if all else fails I will purchase a new table and chairs :)

Susan, you can also consider having a table top cut for your table and extend its life until you move and may want to purchase something more suitable for your new home.

BeverlyFlaDeziner- do you have links to the pics u posted of the drapes? Or website?

I honestly love your chairs! I'd find a darker trestle table to go with them, then they will pop as being light and cool!
