Too good to be true? Amazon product issue...

About two months ago, my daughter, a college freshman away at school, asked me to order her a hair straightener. For some reason, she did not like the high quality one that I had bought before she left for school when the old one we shared stopped working. So she looked on Amazon, found one she liked and I ordered it, having it sent directly to her at school. I wasn't necessarily expecting much though it did get high reviews.

She brought it home with her over Thanksgiving break. She has to fly back/forth, so she had it packed carefully in between her clothes in her carry on bag. She did not check the bag, did not drop it, etc. However, after she got home and went to use it a couple of days later, both shafts were completely broken down near the joint. While it would still heat up, b/c of where the shafts were broken, we could not even duct tape them back together. It wasn't expensive so I told her I'd order her a new (different) one when she got back to school.

Yesterday I decided to leave feedback for the product. In my head, I was thinking, these kind of things must frequently get dropped (I know I drop my hair dryer, brush, etc every so often when styling my hair), so I would think that the shafts would be sturdier. Dd said she had only used the straightener maybe 8 times and did not recall ever dropping it. I was going to see if I could send it back for replacement/refund, but wouldn't you know, dh threw it out on Monday. So I left a 2 star review, indicating that my daughter was very pleased with the performance but disappointed that after only using it about 8 times in two months, it had completely broken.

To my surprise, apparently this seller reads its reviews b/c I had an email this morning from their customer service rep stating she would be happy to assist me getting compensated. So I responded to her this morning. While I'm not expecting much, I was surprised that even though I had not communicated directly with the seller or Amazon, someone obviously was reading the product reviews. I'll see if there is actually any follow through and will happily update my review if they do in fact either replace it or refund me. Good customer service deserves to get recognized these days!

That's wonderful! I frequently see customer service reps answering consumer questions on Amazon and I've seen dissatisfied comments addressed similarly to yours. I've been amazed as well at most Amazon sellers' return policies. It makes buying something sight-and-touch unseen more acceptable. Good luck!

Very nice! Some of the smaller retailers know that a bad rating can kill them so they do take extra good care of their customers.

I've had fantastic experiences w/ almost everything I've bought from Amazon. Whenever I have had problems and called, most of the time they've sent me a new item and told me to just throw out or donate the old one.

I've had similar experiences with sellers on Amazon. I posted a review for a power bank that was much larger than listed, and the seller not only corrected the listing, but refunded me the cost of the charger, and didn't ask for me to return it, just to remove my review, which I did.

We ordered a table from Wayfair that came damaged with a gouge in the side. It wasn't expensive or high quality but just what we were looking for. I replied to their email about the product telling them about the gouge. They responded within 36 hours and they are sending me a replacement and told me to keep the first one. I also ordered six side dining chairs that were so reasonably priced and great quality and shipped with no damage. I am pleased with their selection and the customer service.

4kids4us - i hope you'll go back and update your review once they take care of your issue. I think the businesses that do try to do the right thing deserve the recognition for trying to make the customer happy.

I have always had good experiences dealing with Amazon returns and problems. Little hassle compared to mortar and brick shopping because all records are easily found on my Amazon account info.

It's one thing when you are the purchaser but quite another when you are the recipient of a gift. I got a shredder from Amazon as a gift, and it was clearly used, because there were shreds of paper in it. I can't tell you how many hoops I had to jump through to return the shredder and get a replacement.

Reviews for products should be about the product, amazon has a separate optional process for rating the seller/transaction. They have finally gotten most of the reviews which were from people who received a discount or free product in exchange for their review cleaned up and separated from the verified buyer reviews which helps but overall there’s still a bit of pushiness to get a review on something a person just received therefore how can they be expected to give an objective review (depending on the item)?!

Nothing irks me more than going to look at reviews and seeing practically all saying “just got item x today, can’t wait to try it”....unless it’s a complaint about the seller but nada about the actual product...

Amazon has occasionally shipped orders that never arrived, most times their fix has been to refund, if the item shows up that I can keep it along with the refund, and once they gave a second try at shipping the order out to me instead of a refund because I preferred the product over a refund and having to search elsewhere for it.

Jenn, I agree. I gave a product review on the product page, but gave the seller a separate rating on the seller's page. I told the customer service rep that I updated my review of the product to reflect their willingness to replace the product but I felt my rating was fair - my dd liked how the flat iron worked with her hair, but it did break. So my rating was 3 stars for the product itself as I think people should be forewarned. I agree - I don't understand why people rate something they haven't even used yet.

With how much people are buying on amazon, we need to be able to trust the reviews and obviously it’s a lot better if they are written to provide useful info about a product (argh!! those haven’t tried the item just arrived reviews drive me up the wall!!)

I bought a Chi flat iron that is still working perfectly a decade later, for about a quarter of what they were priced at in stores, all because it’s pepto bismol pink and didn’t sell like the other colors they came out with during that seasonal limited edition run. So I scored a great deal all because I was okay with Pepto pink color nobody else wanted - as long as it works who cares what color the plastic outer housing is!
