Help me make this awkward great room great

Go easy on me here. I know this room doesn’t look good as it is but that’s why I’m here asking for help. This room is our family room (see pics). It serves as a hangout space for family movie nights, as well as music jam sessions. The home is a rental so we are limited with what we can do to make it better but I think there’s still a lot of room for improvement. My issues with the room are:
-Long and narrow. Layout feels awkward sometimes. Have considered reorienting the room but I can’t put the tv over the fireplace and I’m not sure if I like it in the corner (though I’m open to your ideas).
- Don’t know how to fill the wall space (especially the tv wall). Seems like the three walls all compete with each other. Maybe that’s ok???
-Once you’re in the room it feels ok but the entry from the French doors is awkward. I think the sectional is too big?....and the tv wall too....meh.
- I’d like to change the color scheme. French doors lead to the kitchen/dining area, which is SW Mindful Gray. The landlord is fine with us painting. I’d like colors that make the room feel cozier with a rustic/eclectic feel. The room begs to feel dramatic but we are currently missing the mark. I can go dark or bold. I just don’t want to go lighter than Mindful Gray. I can paint the mantle but I am NOT able to paint the fireplace, wood work, or the brick. - Little natural light (just two small windows on the west wall flanking the fireplace, and the French doors to the patio - note: there is a second set of French doors on the same wall leading to the kitchen) and no overhead lighting other than the fireplace. Need to work with floorlamps.
- The pictures and ugly curtains on the patio doors will go. I’m open to changing the seating and eventually we will get a bigger tv but it’s not in the budget for now. The guitar wall stays and we are keeping the teak cabinet teak that is currently under the guitars (though it can be moved). Everything else is open to being replaced, removed or repurposed.

Last note, we originally had the ottoman by the sofa and a chair in the corner but it felt crowded and the chair (not shown) felt frumpy. You will see in another pic that we moved the ottoman to the corner and got a coffee table. We like stools and benches worked in because they are great for music sessions but again, totally open to your suggestions. Also, in one pic there is a lot of clutter. That’s unusual. It’s there because we had to move some things when we were painting another room.

Ok.... I welcome your thoughts on how I can improve this room. I’m especially interested in paint color recommendations. I originally thought more neutral and Twilight Gray and mega Greige were both recommended, with maybe Gauntlet gray on the fireplace wall. Now I think I might want something with more impact. Let me know what you think. Thank you!!!

I love the guitars on the wall.

Do you use the fireplace? Please add a photo from the TV toward the French doors.

Yes. We do use the fireplace quite a bit. Here’s a pic of the view from the tv. The kitchen is a mess because we are getting ready to paint the cabinets but you get the idea. We almost always keep the one side of the French doors closed to create a breakfast nook.

What a nice room! guitars, and clay-brick accent wall - in person, not too dark?...

idk if this helps, but idea for rug with lighter background... also like your wood tree piece.

@everdebz The room does feel too dark at times. Especially mid day on an overcast day. I don’t mind so much because we mostly use the room in the evening when the lights are on. It’s just too brown. Too beige. Too terra-cotta. Too something. I’m a fan of embracing dark in a room and going with it when that’s how it is naturally but this room has never felt right to me.

Agreed on the curtains. Those are the landlords and we plan to change them and also hang them higher and longer. I’m trying to change the color scheme. The rug you suggested is nice but the rest of my house is SW Mindful Gray. Furniture is Smokey blue/charcoal, burnt umber and lots of medium toned wood like the teak chest under the guitars. I’d like this room to have some continuity with the rest of the home, while still being it’s own room. I’d like to get away the red/brown/green/gold palette. That’s from a former home.

Though I should add that I am a fan of mixing warm and cool together when done well.

I'd experiment with your blue pieces in this room. You need light, and the patio door brings light - where's it goin'? ;-)

Playing guitar: do you/yours like to sit forward in the chair - or lounge back? I ask cause I play. Have you ever tried a different wall for them? Just idea for a straight line on long tv wall [rustic wine barrel]

You have a lot of big brown/dark blocks--sofa, ottoman, TV cabinet, TV itself, dark fireplace. May I suggest that you get a very long, low console style cabinet for the TV wall and sell the ottoman, which looks out of place.

Maybe current, or ikea cases on outsides - bench placed inside? on long wall.

I assume the change of the sectional is not an option?

You need to break down all that brown. If the bulk of the sectional stays, add throws, add bold pillows to create some rhythm. illuminate your guitars. Hang light or bright curtains as high as you can (right at the crease with the ceiling), add a big light, or bright rug.

I would think of adding curtains at the french doors as well.

    Hope it helps.

@KB Design LLC Given that this is a rental, I’m limited with my lighting options. I could maybe swap out the ceiling fan for one with lighting but that’s about it. Totally agreed on the pops of color and raising the curtains to the ceiling line. Just looking for some direction on paint colors so I can get a color pallet in mind. As for the sectional....it’s too big and on its last leg. I’m totally open to replacing it. Not sure if I should go with a smaller sectional or break up the seating a bit more. I’m open to suggestions. Ha is for taking the time to respond!

Got it, to choose your seating - observe how everyone sits in your family, if all members like to lay-down - get a sectional, if you are more of a seating type of people 2 smaller sofas or a sofa and some chairs will fit the space better.

As of the color - you can not make a dark room bright by paining it. (since adding more light is not an option) Maybe opt to turn the other way and go to cozy or seductive theme? The brick (if my monitor is right) has some blue notes in it, and with the honey toned trim - Gray/blue/aubergine or any other that will agree with the brick for the walls, and cream for the curtains and the rug.

Beautiful room. Here are a few things that I would try, see if you like them. I would move the small table and picture from beside the fireplace to behind the sofa.

Remove the large wall hanging from this wall. Move the floor lamp to the right corner with one of the chairs from the guitar wall.

Your TV console is a little too small for the room. I have enlarged it in the pic below.

Lastly, the guitar wall is great. With the lamp and chair in the left corner. Move the nesting tables closer to the end of the sofa. The guitar wall would look better with the guitars all the way across and no wall hanging in the center ( I duplicated a couple of your guitars as an example). I didn't show it, but I would also center the light under the guitars with the ceiling beam.

Please let me know how you feel about these ideas.

@KB Design LLC Thank you! It’s confirmed. We are definitely sectional people. I think we just need something much smaller. I appreciate your confirmation on the direction for the paint. We do wish to embrace the darker room and go more cozy/seductive. If you have any specific paint color recommendations in the blue-gray spectrum, I’d be grateful. I’m having difficulty knowing where to jump in from the Mindful Gray in the adjacent room. My other issue is filling the walls. Is it ok to have the guitar wall, plus the fireplace and whatever flanks it, AND a long tv wall with shelves or large art (I don’t plan to work with what we have. I would get other pieces more suitable to the space). Too much competition between walls or just embrace it? Thank you.

@housegal200 Thanks for the ideas! I agree that I need to break down the brown and change up the tv wall significantly. I’m having difficulty translating the contemporary feel of the pics you included into my own style but I really like the ideas. Thank you!!

@phuninthesun Thanks for taking the time to share your ideas and provide examples. I agree with you about moving those pieces. Right now I’m leaning towards getting rid of them all together and reducing the number of small accent pieces. I feel it makes the room look cluttered. I will keep your ideas in mind though. Not sure if I can get my husband to let go of the iron piece but I’m going to show him your pic and see what he says. Thank you!

@everdebz Thanks for all the great ideas and pics! I love the paint color. I feel like the room actually begs for something a little deeper/more dramatic than a mid-tone color but I do appreciate the suggestion. I might consider going teal in my bedroom now! I love the idea of framing the guitars a bit more. I need to think through what makes sense to do in a rental. Might be best to keep that idea for our forever home. I really appreciate the ideas. Those guitar hangers are cool. Love the look. Lots of great lighting on that link too. Definitely our style. Thanks for understanding the musician design needs! Oh, and your question..... for playing we generally prefer stools, benches, etc... hence, the ottoman in the corner. It’s out of place though. We are going to get rid of it. We do have some odds and end benches and stools on the guitar side that you can’t see in the pics. Once we get the rest of the room figured out we will probably pick up some industrial looking stools that all match.

Thanks for responding... another comment about ikea cubes just a few feet high - did you get what I meant / vertically on each end of a bench in between - to look a bit 'together'. Maybe the tv at its left [on the long wall].

From photo, current guitar area looks within a walk-through....? but they look nice on taller wall [but sorry don't think the metal piece brings it 'together'].

Another is to place Ikea/bench arrangement where guitars are now -- and arch their placement, and place a round item: maybe 3 vinyl records in the space "under" the arching guitars...

[filling the V just a little]

Hey, I never recommend colors online, need to see the light of the room, sorry.

I do not think that your 2 tall walls are conflicting - but, I will rehang the guitars to accent the vault - in a more triangular (kind of informal triangle fashion), I will also think that if you go darker - that your ceiling does't have to be white. Just a lighter shade then walls, maybe. Then I will pick a horizontal line (maybe when you put up your curtains - pick a rod as that line) and will reinforce it with the arrangement of art too creating a "hug" of sorts.

@KBDesign LLC THANK YOU!!! I totally understand about color recommendations. I do appreciate your input. Very helpful. I was wondering about the ceiling too and appreciate the thought. Thank you.

One reason the room is dark is you don't have enough lamps, and most of the ones you have point towards the ceiling. That works great on the back wall with the guitars (might even add more up-lights there) but meanwhile the center of the room is unlit and dark. In other words, it may not be the dark sectional that is the problem but the fact you have no lights illuminating it.

Before painting, I'd add more lamps and fix the lighting. For example, an arc lamp placed in the corner of the sectional and arching over the coffee table (or ottoman, as I see in one photo you are using it as coffee table) would light up the sectional / middle of the room. I suppose you could also do a long skinny sofa table and place two lamps on either end of it. You're going to want substantial sized lamps -- sorry that table lamp just seems out of proportion and isn't doing much.

With the vaulted ceiling the floor lamp you have is probably not doing much either.

I'm not an interior designer but I just think that addressing the lighting situation will make a world of difference, and that's what I'd think through first before painting or replacing furniture.

@JenniferM yes. I agree with you about the lighting. The lamps are leftovers from our previous home. They are short term solutions. We are limited to the few outlets around the parameter of the room. No floor outlets for light as you described but we are leaning towards switching out the ceiling fan for lighting. Though it’s a rental I think it’s a small expense to make this room more enjoyable. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate the confirmation. And, I hadn’t considered floorlamps that point upward so that’s a good idea too. Thanks!

Why don't you get a head start and clear the room of anything that isn't staying? I like the round piece above the mantel but it isn't showing well there. Maybe the tall piece between the guitars would look better at the mantel. A bigger TV will probably never be cheaper than at this time of year, and will come in well below the cost of new seating for this room. Put the TV between the French door and the FP and on a swivel base so you can adjust for viewing. Then move the sofa so it is on the wall where the TV is. You can put a floor lamp in the corner right of the FP and bring the sofa close to the wall so you get more floor space in the back for jamming. Hang big pretty art (not from the big box stores) 5" above the sofa.

They make battery powered lights for this exact purpose, when you can't have cords running in trippable places. That said I think you can easily run an extension cord under the sectional, under the rug, to the outlet where the t.v. is plugged in.

I also like decoenthusiaste suggestion too for a new layout.

Love this room. I would consider painting the room a lighter version of any color in the brick because that is your focal point!

The layout looks good too as you can see the tv and the fireplace while seated on the sofa.

I think you should decide on the paint that will coordinate with the brick.

Then choose a light large rug, maybe broadloom in a light tweed rug to banish the dark flooring and create contrast with your sofa.

I would also put the cool guitars on either side of the TV in a long horizontal line to fill the wall.

Try the copper piece between the two doors.

Put a large rectangular mirror on the brick fireplace

    Find large art work for the far wall where the guitars are now...maybe a triptych to fill the area;

Matching lingerie type tall chest on either side of the fireplace with colorful lamps on them.

A console table behind the sofa facing the fireplace with a pair of low fat lamps, possibly brass or silver or zinc.

A pair of lamps on the new art wall where the guitars are hanging now. Something that will look good with the art work; clear glass with colored lampshades?

A large lounge chair between the TV console and the fireplace, basically where the ottoman is now with a side table and a lamp for reading.

This will give you six pair of lamps for lighting and one floor lamp for lighting plus storage. They should be large and fat to fill the room. and light colored will give you contrast....Have light, white cream natural fabric, fur throw pillows on the sofa to lighten it up too.

Light curtains, roman shades white pillows large art

LIght rug, roman shades light pillows, light walls

Colorful lamp shades and colorful lamp, ligth pillows

    Again light rug light pillows

Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions. I appreciate the picture examples. I would really love to change the orientation of the room but I can’t with the current sectional. It’s too deep to make it work on the right side of the fireplace and there’s not enough room on the left side with the door. When we get a different seating group we will have more flexibility. Thanks to everyone who has commented. I really do appreciate all the great ideas. Right now we are finishing up a couple other rooms. After Christmas we will be ready to clear out this room and paint and put into action some of these great ideas. Thank you!!
