My bedroom carpet has needed to be replaced for way too long. I'm torn between carpet and hardwood, although the ease of carpet installation is very tempting.

Forget fashion and trends--it's whatever you want to live with. Same thing with colors--neutrals are easier to live with because lots of things go with neutrals rather than a really bold color, but if you plan to live there a really long time, you may eventually replace the carpet. Someone advised me years ago to never skimp on carpet pad. A really good pad helps protect the carpet and makes it seem really plush. That is how we selected the carpet pad and carpet for our bedrooms--we like to put our feet on really plush surfaces when we start our day :)

What's under the carpet now? Wood?

I went from a fully-carpeted house to fully-wood. Only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

We have hardwood in our bedroom with little area rugs (5 X 3 maybe?) on each side of the bed. I didn't want a full area rug that goes under the bed - that just didn't make sense for us but the little rugs work well.

I agree with blfenton, for me hardwood under the bed. When I clean the floor I can see the dust is gone.
