Normally, dark blue isn’t the best choice for North light (unless it has purple undertone), but you do have the three windows which will help.

It's a lovely blue, we're thinking of painting our dining room an even darker blue.

Imo, you don't need to go to whites/neutrals to play off of that. Take a paint swatch with you when you go furniture shopping and while looking at art. If you aren't able to buy the spendy stuff then buy the not so spendy stuff. Just make sure YOU like it. Referring to the art mostly, you can buy art posters etc for not much.

Seems blue and red might be ok. Show both similar blue/red in art / pillows but not too much. Like you said: WHITE! White throw, backgrounds of white?

I voted 'repaint to a warmer light color' , but if there was another option for painting the room 'white' I might have picked that one too.Any lighter, brighter, warmer neutral colors would be an improvement.The color you have now is a very pretty dark blue, but it is just too overwhelming, dark & cold looking for the 'north side' of the house. By nature, the northside of any house has a darker blue tinted natural daylight coming in the windows to begin with and any blue or cool toned paint will accentuate & intensify that effect, especially a darker cool toned paint color.

We have the same problem with northern light in our kitchen, it is also on the north side of the house & we are currently mid reno and redoing the whole kitchen in mostly white, with pale gray & a touch of black accent. We plan to add a few decorations in warmer colors such as an apple green kitchen aid stand mixer. & the adjoining room next to the kitchen is tomato red also which adds visual warmth. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I will definitely share the final result! I bought the rug and it is already pulling the room together and down the road I will replace the sofa. I’m going with lights, and warm shades of everything, for some reason I feel white will just add to the coolness that I’m trying to avoid so sticking to warmer hues even ivory is my plan for now!

Another idea that I'm not sure if you've considered would be adding pops of yellow. This color works well with blue and red and would brighten up the room. Perhaps some throw pillows and large piece of art that primarily has yellow in it would really tie the room together. Pair that with a vase that holds some yellow flowers.

I love the rug! I would stick with the ivory sheer drapes. This way you can keep attention on smaller details.

The rule of thumb is 60-30-10 for percentage of colors you should use. Ivory would be neutral and would work with all three colors harmoniously. Blue and red are your 60 and 30, so by pulling in yellow through the artwork, small bits in the rug, and vase or flowers I think you will have a great looking space!

I love the idea of pulling in the brass. The picture you have on the floor in your "before" photos would look really great surrounded by some smaller brass framed mirrors, since it does already have a bit of yellow tones in it.

You definitely can save it! I wouldn't recommend you try and "fix" it if you aren't in love with the blue paint. If you want that color, you can make it work by creating lots of contrast that is softer and meshes well together. Lots of drapes will definitely help! Don't be afraid to double up with thinner and thicker materials so you can tie back or close the drapes depending on the light of the day

Dark blue mixed with white or cream will look very nice and add some gold accents like a mirror, rod and accessories

Would you be open to painting one wall a lighter color, thereby minimizing the work of re-painting the entire room? A nice creamy off white might work. Good luck.
