POLL: Do you prefer ONE or TWO story houses?
Comments (327)To me, ranch is the only style id ever want. same square footage feels so much larger when its one story and not two. Easier to move between private and public areas of the home. ours spans almost our entire lot and gives a lot of space for landscaping out front, outdoor living out back. Stairs are challenging when your very old or very young! here, most have full basements not counted in the listed square footage = bonus whole other house underneath (ours is over half finished, the other part is nice but concrete floor and walls and used for utilities/laundry/storage). Of all the home types, split levels dont make sense to me...See MorePOLL: Do you burn candles at home?
Comments (26)I use wax candles at times - mostly for the aroma - but they are in glass or candle jars. I've never had a fire but I once left a candle too near a kitchen cabinet and it marred the surface. I live in Houston and in the summer candles can make the room feel muggy so I also use battery operated candles. I love the flicker flame types that look so real and also have a little crackling sound. They are on timers and safe but I go through a ton of batteries. For aroma and during the day I use the little pots that melt wax tarts. I have a diffuser for essential oils but it's kind of a lot of trouble, doesn't really sent the air and the oils are very expensive...See MorePOLL: Do you have a dedicated space for working from home?
Comments (73)Yes, I do have a dedicated office space in my garden apartment. The study serves as my work space for my realty company. I enjoy a pretty white functional desk and white upholstered office chair from Pottery Barn. Added a small white second file cabinet at end of desk. Now I have two file cabinets, a printer, bookcases on opposite wall to store books and a white queen size sofa bed between. Works very well for my work. And thinking my meeting with some clients can be in that room as well as Starbucks as has been before. All works well! I also work on my iPad in a living room chair I use for my stock market investments as I listen and watch the markets each week day morning. I, also used to teach piano in my home studio on a small grand piano in my living room. Now I have a Yamaha upright in my new garden apt living room. My music is stored in a old Lane baby chest that I refurbished years ago. That chest is stored in a closet near my piano. I am always looking for students to teach them the piano keyboard. I compose and post compositions to staff note paper. I like detail!...See MorePOLL: Do you need a garage at home?
Comments (208)I voted that I need a garage because I need a place to store my four bicycles. We never park a car there, and very few people in my neighborhood do. It is more awkward to get into the house from the garage. All houses in my neighborhood were built (1947-1953) with one of four floor plans, but they all have a garage on one side - and this acts as a buffer between houses. Therefore, if I look out my kitchen window, I see my neighbors' garage, but no windows, and this also blocks noise from one house to the next. I have my A/C unit under my kitchen window, and while it is very quiet (for an A/C), my neighbor cannot hear it at all, except perhaps from inside her garage. I need the storage that I get from my garage, but if the house were larger, I could store a lot of it inside the house, although it would not be as pretty. I'm not at all familiar with basements and have only been in one house that had one, and I thought it was a bit weird. You could call my garage a tool shed, if you like, since you cannot park a car in it, but it does have a regular garage door, which is handy for the bikes. I live in Los Angeles, and so weather is not an issue regarding the garage. Even when it rains, the rain is so light that an umbrella is not usually needed. I'm in a frost-free zone, and so we never get any frost on the cars, and we have a double-wide driveway, which will accommodate two cars. The easiest way to get groceries into the house is from the driveway. My house in Venice (CA) had a carpeted garage, and the previous resident used it as an office, but I put my universal weight machine there and used it as a personal gym. I could open the garage door and look at my beautiful back yard while I was working out. In Venice, the garage was at the back of the house instead of beside the house. I don't have such a good view from my garage now, or at least not a private view like I had before. In San Francisco, I almost never had a garage, but then I didn't have a car there either. At the last place I lived in SF, we stored our garbage cans in the garage....See MoreHome Reborn
