Lingerie. Your opinions and advice please

How many bras at slips do you have? What are your uses this for them?

Normally I just have two bras and one slip and that's it. I wash them after a couple of uses just alternating back and forth. I'm thinking of upping my numbers to maybe 4 and a bra and slip combination if they still have those things. I want to have to wash less frequently plus I want to look at the whole thing of having a different silhouette for different outfits. Do you do that?

I don't have matching bras and panties. Do you? Is it just for fashion? I'm guessing yes. :-)

I have one dress that benefits very much from a smooth silhouette so I bought a Spanx type that wasn't for the legs just for the Torso . It works perfectly. But I was thinking it would be really nice to just put on one piece that has the bra attached. Does anyone have anything like that? And how do you like it? That one I have smooths out my belly but then I still wear my regular bra and I wonder if there's something more flattering.

I wore the Spanx for the whole evening and only had a moment of discomfort. otherwise I felt comfortable in it . Do you if you use Spanx or a girdle like that?

Bras and panties - I have lots, never counted; they don't match. I wear bras more than once before I wash unless I'm sweating. I wear sports bras when I exercise and do throw those in the laundry after use. I have two half slips - one shorter and one longer should I ever need them again. Haven't worn either in probably 20 years. I've worn dresses but they're thick enough they don't need a slip and/or I just don't want to wear a slip when it's hot out which is when I wear dresses.

I'm with kitch, somewhat amazed at someone only owning 2 bras.

I've got 7-8 in our 'main' house and keep 4-5 more at our vacation house. I generally put on a fresh bra daily as I also live in a subtropical climate. Don't have matching panties; have probably 15 pairs again divided into 2 houses. I do buy the same brand/same colors (nude or white) in bras and underpants; once I find what's comfortable I don't like to have to worry about not having what I like.

I haven't worn a slip for years and years but then I no longer wear skirts or dresses at all so that explains that.

I have 2 'real' bras I wear regularly, and several pull-on bralettes ditto, then I have a number of alternates in both styles that are maybe a bit less comfortable, or older, that I wear when my favorites are in the laundry. The bralettes are good for exercising in.

I try to stick w/ nude & black - that's all you really need, IMPE - & the same w/ undies , altho I do have those in other colors because I like to buy the packages or 3 or more & you can't always pick your colors w/ those. I have way more pairs than I need in a week, but I just can never seem to get around to weeding things out. My lingerie drawer is in serious need of organization!

My work clothes are t-shirts & jeans/pants, so I don't often get to wear slips, tho I do own a couple.

Black & nude works under just about everything.

I have several bras, without going to count, I’d say a dozen, not counting my sports/running bras. They are mostly nude and black, a couple of other colors, and most are the same style and brand. I do have some that have convertible straps, racer backs, and I have 2 strapless in each color. I haven’t worn a slip in years.

Except for a couple of Spanx panties, I wear one brand almost exclusively and have lots of colors but mostly black and pink-nude. I wear a lot of black and gray so yes, a lot of my underwear matches at times.

Wow, you read a decor conversation post and learn something new that has nothing to do with the conversation topic. I had no idea that the Gulf and South Atlantic states were considered subtropical. Please do not judge - I do have areas in which I am competent. Anyway, I also have lotsa bras - some for exercise/everyday living and 6 for "dress up /smooth silhouette". Everyday living - I wear 3 days. Exercise - I wear once. Dress up I wear a couple of times maybe - depends on when lingerie load of wash is done. All are in nude. I have one nude and one black half slip. Yes, Linelle, one can never have too many pairs of undies.

I don't wear a bra . Bilateral mastectomies. Breast cancer is a b!tch but I don't have to wear a bra anymore. I don't miss it. I've chosen to live breast free. Going into my 10th year of survival. I wear scarves to camouflage my flat chest, when needed. Otherwise I celebrate that I'm still above ground.

Yeonassky, what you might like are the high-waisted spanx type of garments either with a regular leg or covering the upper thigh that you can wear with your own bra. I will wear that under a dress or skirt and it even works for pants and my pants suit. I used to have the bra slip but i like this new way better because the bra is better.

They had a bra fitting event on campus and I wound up buying about $300 of good bras. I have one black, 3 various nude colors, and then two good sports bras. I also have the soft sports bras but the good support ones are better for Zumba and Spin.

I have 3 bras I wear regularly. All Victoria’s Secret. ( I usually wear each 3 times, then wash. Unless it’s really really hot, then I wash more often.). Several other special occasion bras.

My daily wear bras are white. 95% of my underpants are white. So while the brands do not match, the color does. (I was devastated when I finally realized I just can’t wear Victoria’s Secret underpants. They are designed to reveal too much skin, skin I’m not comfortable leaving bare even under my clothes.). I like cotton undies by Hanes from Walmart!

Thank you everyone :-). The two bras I have get washed after the second or third time. In the winter that is. In summer they get washed daily but they're washed so quickly because I do it in the sink and then I just hang to dry. One is nude and the other one is black. As far as panties go I have about 10. Maybe I'm a little bit minimalistic when it comes to undergarments :-)

For panties Victoria's Secret just never worked for me either. That's all my daughter wears but for me there too revealing.

Because I like the price I have been wearing Wonder Bra full support with no underwire and for years found it to be fine.

The ones I have right now are falling apart more quickly than any I've had before have ever done. So the Hunt is on for a better bra. I'm making sure that I don't have under the clothing wardrobe failure. It hasn't happened so far but I wanted to hedge my bets by having extras. I have had a professional fitting so know my size because several years ago I lost 50 lb and wanted to make sure I was doing the right bra size.

You're right it sounds like I will just use my bra with the Spanx. I thought maybe they had a slip thing which fit from the upper thigh to under the chest with a bra attached. I thought that would make a smoother transition to my chest and on my back as well.

I have many bras and undies. I THINK I may still have a half-slip - just in case. LOL I cannot remember the last time I worse a slip. I do have a few camis. A good bra is a necessity. It can take you from looking matronly to more youthful. It can take pounds off. I have nude and black bras - the same for undies, and yes, I wear matching.

I have two of the same bra that I got at Bloomingdales with a salesperson who helped with the fitting, and they are my go-to favorites for everyday. Then I have probably 6 others that are the ugly stepsisters or the “special occasion” (which for me means extra padding because I’m not well endowed) bras. All are nude except for one black, I think. Undies are all different colors (because why not have fun, and they’re invisible under my daily uniform of jeans) and mostly jockey brand with “no seams” and a few Victoria’s Secret. I’ve got black, purple, blue, pink, polka dot, etc...

This is my favorite everyday bra. For me, this seems like a lot of money for a bra but I have gotten my money’s worth!

For exercise and days when I just don’t care, I wear Hanes bras that are so comfy and basic. This one.

Like Sueb20, my favorite undies are the Jockey no line. The nude are great and don't show even under light-colored pants. I usually only buy Jockey if I do not need to wear the Spanx. I have some of the matching camisoles, too.

The bras I wear for everyday are the Wacoal T-shirt bra, which is super nice. But then again I was fitted for it. Not cheap, but it makes a huge difference. Because I have so many I can rotate them out. I machine wash in a mesh bag but hang to dry.

That's funny, Sue. I went for a bra fitting for the first time this summer at a specialty store, and that's the bra that I ended up with (the Chantelle). I love it! I had never bought an expensive bra before but I think I'm going to go back and get another one soon. FYI they are sold on Amazon also, I think, but I'll probably go back to the store as the price is pretty much the same.

I love Jockeys no seam, as long as there's cotton content, as much as possible.

About no slip. I lied. I have a black half slip somewhere in the deep recesses of an underwear drawer. It's for when I'm wearing a dress or skirt (very infrequently) with tights and the skirt would cling or ride up when walking.

I have 6 or 7 bras but only really wear a couple. I live in a really dry climate and can wear a bra 2 or 3 days before they stretch out and need to be washed.

I have a pair of ancient tap pants that go to mid thigh. Which really aren't tap pants but I don't know what to call them. Anyway, when I need a slip, that is what I wear.

After trying tons of different no-show, seamless, invisible, etc bikinis I still had lines. I finally resorted to only buying pants in a heavier weight because thinner pants showed lines. And there was no way I was wearing a thong.

I finally found the laser cut style and I am hooked. They look odd because the leg openings are completely unfinished. But they truly have no extra bulk around the rear that can show through clothes. Love them!

Anyone holding onto an old half-slip, be sure to check the elastic waist before you need it. I had one, a holdover from my working days, and the elastic was shot, like what happens to old bathing suits. I replaced it and use the new once a year, maybe. So far the elastic is fine but someday I expect it will also be shot.

I’ve lost weight and my bras don’t fit right. I need a new fitting but in the meantime, I’m making do with the old ones. After many past fittings at various stores, I trust the Nordstrom fitter the most. She came up with a number and letter combination I’ve never seen in a regular store. The bras fit beautifully, or they did until recently.

I have 6 everyday, 2-3 specialty, and 10 exercise bras. Since they stopped making my favorite undies, I have a draw full of second runner ups and I keep searching for a new favorite, They seem to discontinue whatever I like, if I knew ahead of time I would stockpile.

Once I asked didn’t they have any more of a certain style in cotton. The clerk said they never came in cotton. I said I’m wearing them right now, they’ve been cotton for years. Well, not anymore obviously, said the clerk, who was possibly younger than my oldest pair of undies. No longer in cotton, no longer my favorite.

I was in a Soma and wanted to buy one pair to see if it could be my new favorite. The clerk said but if you buy six pairs, each pair cost less. But I don’t know if I like them yet, I don’t need 6 pairs I don’t like. While she was ringing the sale up, every single other sales clerk said but if you buy 6 pairs blah blah blah. Yes, thank you, I am well aware of your offer, didn’t you hear the other 5 clerks just make it?, but I don’t know if I like them yet. I didn’t like them, I’m glad I don’t have 6 pairs.

Thank you everyone.!:-) I really appreciate everyone's comments and advice. I have now the license to go and buy as many good decent bras as I feel I need. I will also be getting a different Spanx. :-). One that is higher up on my back I think. No bulging then. Thanks for the links as well I am perusing them now. :-).

New question I've never bought bras online. Have you had much luck with that?

    last modified: 8 years ago

I have bought a bra online but only because I buy the same ones all the time. I too was fitted for a Wacoal bra and know what size and type fits perfectly. Love their t-shirt bra.

i forgot that I also wear camisoles and have them in several colors. One is a Spanx I believe which gives a really smooth line if needed. I mostly wear them for extra warmth or if I need another layer due to see-through fabric.

I just ordered 6 new bras. I have a horrible time finding bras since I sized out of Victoria's secret. All of them have that weird pointy thing going on which I don't understand and hate with a passion. Who designs those things? Do they think it looks good for two points starting out at you? That's why I loved VS. They are shaped like actual breasts, not a cone. Guess it's time to get up and get motivated and lose the extra weight so I can fit back in the VS sizes. These are the cacique brand, and I'm crossing my fingers that I like them, but I won't hold my breath.

We are well endowed in my family. I always sleep with a bra on,but my mom and sisters, all of who are better endowed than i,can't stand to sleep in a bra. I can't stand not too. Very weird.

I like all different colors and patterns of bras and panties. Stripes, polka dots, hearts, swirls, flowers. It's fun. No lace though,it shows through my shirts. And I keep a few white bras to wear under light colored shirts that patterns would show through. No matching sets. I just grab a pair of panties out of the clean pile and put them on. I used to wear a squeem brand waist trainer, which was very effective,if not comfortable, under my clothes to flatten my stomach and shaped my waist. It also suppressed my appetite, which helped me lose weight, but the health hazards outweighed the benefits with a trainer that constricting, so I stopped.

To answer your last question,it depends. When I ordered from VS,I was always happy, since I knew how they fit and liked them. Since I am searching for a new brand,it's been hit or miss, mostly miss. If you have a brand that you love already, online ordering is easy and convenient. If not, reviews and pictures only go so far. Check their return policy before you order.

And if you find one you like, for the love of all that is comfortable and supportive stock up before the discontinue it........

I have tons of bras, panties, Spanx and slips. Good foundations just make you look better in the clothing you have.

The bras I wear most are no longer made, so I stocked up. As a large-busted gal, I'm super tuned to fit. Fantasie side support bras are my go-to. Black and nude, maybe a fun color from time to time. This is the other one I have and love - and they still make. I wear it under everything, including t-shirts.

I also have two strapless bras(nude/black) that are not very comfortable, but I do need them with a couple outfits. Also seamed bras by Fantasie, but no longer made.

Finally, I wear the Maximum Control Sports bra from Walcoal. I like it because it's moisture-wicking and the ladies don't move. That being said, the fit is weird, so I wouldn't buy without trying on. I go up at least one band size on this one and would never wear it for anything but a workout.

    https://www.barenecessities.com/wacoal-maximum-control-sports-bra--855170_product.htm?pf_id=Wacoal855170

I wear some full coverage panties that match my bras, but thongs always with pants. For these and my slips (full and half), Commando is my brand. I'm not in love with their full coverage bottoms, but everything else is great. Their new Butter Thong is fantastic. Don't even know it's "there".

    https://www.wearcommando.com/products/butter-mid-rise-thong

I'll spare you from looking at these photos if you don't want to.

I have lots of Spanx. I have both full and light "bindage". When I'm wearing skirts in the summer, I like the light-weight Spanx so my thighs don't chafe.

Now you know more about me than you EVER wanted to!

When it comes to underwear I suddenly become very cost-conscious lol. I never really want to have it I guess I just need to. So I have less than I need, I think. (same with socks)

I have just several bras(like maybe 4 or 5) almost all are nudes or blacks and are by Chantelle. I divide them into "newer" and "older". Expensive but I wear them until I can't no more. I hate trying them on, so I stick to one model..it's pretty enough. I have one or two specialty bras for events(that I don't wear since no events. lol), and one sport bra( which I don't wear anymore because no sport). I have couple bras my DH gave me but I don't like them, except for a Natori one. Interestingly it's a copy of the Natori bra that I had when I was twenty. It was like "Hi!! You again??" It's comfy. Unfortunately is white so that's resticting.

Underwear: I have several very fine ones, the rest are simple cotton. No, I don't exactly match..I have just one pair of matching lingerie since it was a gift

I have two slips from Hanro with built in bra..these are very comfy when one needs a layer

I have one amazing slip that looks like million dollars but it's too amazing to work under clothes. One should strout in it back and forth. And be in the mood to do that too.

What I do appreciate-pyjamas..I'm a pyjamas person and I'm cold most of the time. Nightgowns too, but I prefer pyjamas. These, I do buy/replenish from time to time with some excitement.

Well, I'm probably alone in this, but I hate bras, always have, and only wear one when I have to, so I only have 3 or 4. I do have a collection of slips, full and half, of varying lengths and colors, all from thrift shops, if you're looking for slips, check your local thrift shop. I don't wear a dress or skirt without one, they make them hang better and keep them from clinging to me, I can't stand anything tight or clingy.

Always have loved Wacoal bras which I buy at Dillard's, usually two at a time in black and nude. Interestingly, several years ago, the two began to fit differently even tho same size. That is puzzling to me so I try them before I leave the store. I am very picky about straps on bras. Panties - love the 'tap' style I think it's called but sometimes hard to find. My mother would only have matching bras and panties but it is not a special need for me. Slips - oh, I used to love them. When they would get a little worn, they would become summer sleeping garments. I have always considered wearing a full slip to be a very feminine look.

Thanks for all the links to the bras you like. Perhaps time for me to find a few other brands to like.

I think most of the world is wearing the wrong bra. Especially as you get older, it makes a world of difference. I like supportive bras but I want them to be pretty, not like rigging for the engineering marvel of keeping the girls afloat. I especially eschew the really wide straps, ugh. I think Soma does a pretty good job balancing infrastructure and aesthetics. This is my current go to for every day, and I wear mostly the black one in winter, but have it in both colors. For dressy occasions, I have some very pretty lace ones I adore but none are that comfy.

I agree about Jockey seamless, but I like the spandexy version; they feel great and look great.

I just bought some new sports bras. My fave is a Reebok front zip.

Without a bra my boobs have no shape! The bra cups gather my breast tissue together to make them more breast like, lol.

This is the bra that works for me. I found that I needed a smaller band size, and larger cup size than I thought for years was my size. I have read that most women wear too large a band.

I like the idea of that zip front sports bra. I hate pulling a tight bra over my head. It's especially hard when you are sweaty after exercising.

I found that website a few years back when I was struggling to figure out why my bands were on the tightest hook and yet I still had spillage in the cups - a larger size made things worse. Turns out I needed sizes I hadn’t known existed before then, and not all bras in a given size work for all who wear those sizes - bratabase aims to make the search easier. It truly is a great resource though.

Yes, shapewear comes in a one-piece format. They are typically called a "bodysuit." They can be difficult to fit properly because there are so many variables: hip size, waist size, chest size, cup size, plus the length of the torso. Going to the bathroom requires more fiddling than I have patience for.

I wonder if some of the folks who don't own a lot of bras wear odd or difficult sizes. I own 3 bras, all the same except color. I wear a size that is difficult to find locally, and bras are hard to shop for online unless you know exactly what you want. So, I buy my bras at a specialty lingerie shop in a town about 1.5 hours away - for about $140 each. There is nothing pretty about them, but they do what they're supposed to and are relatively comfortable, which - for me - is an achievement in itself.

Oh I forgot we were supposed to do an inventory. A dozen bras, about 2 dozen panties, and 4 sports bras. Zero half slips. One pair of IDK what to call them; sort of like bicycle shorts but much much thinner.

PS Oh yes, I am a matcher.

When I worked my bra and panties matched. Not only that, but they matched or coordinated with the colour of my suit which coordinated with my shoes and bag. And dare I admit, everything coordinated with the colour of my mascara.

Now I buy for comfort and running.

Bras (not counting sports bras) probably close to 30, different types for different occasions, always matching underwear. I do tend to stick to nude or black. I don't have any slips but I do have quite a few of the light control spanx tank tops. I like wearing them as a layer under clothes in the fall / winter / spring. I'm always cold and they do the trick.

I have 6 bras but only because I found one I liked and stocked up. But even though they are all the exact same bra purchased at nearly the same time they all fit slightly different.

I have one short half slip and one longer one. I don't know the last time I wore them. Perhaps my BIL's funeral.

For panties, I like laser cut but they are hard to find and there are lots of garbage versions out there. They are truly seamless around the cheek area and have seams on the side.
