What size table do I need for a banquette?

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help. We are about to start our kitchen project and have opted for banquette seating but I'm struggling to determine what size and shape table would fit best.

Internal measurements are 1200mm (plus a little to join the main units to the seating area - I'm assuming around 200mm) by 1600mm.

Any advice would be most gratefully received!

I hate banquettes they are the worst possible seating , why not just 4 chairs and round table.

With a banquette, the person in the corner is screwed. They can't get out. They are dependent on everyone else. A round table or rectangular table with folding leaves would be awesome.

Corner banquettes are not great for family dining. A pedestal table helps but everyone still has to move to let the inside people get out. I'd prefer a pedestal table and 4 chairs. or just 1 bench and 3 chairs.

One bench under window, 30-32” diameter table and 3 small scale chairs would be perfect.

I'd think about making just a linear banquette instead of L shaped, along the long wall. Then add oval shapes tulip table in front with 2 small scale chairs on outside of table. That will be much more user friendly and easier to get in and out. I think banquettes are great for kids and small families for casual dining, games, homework etc.

Thanks all. We've opted for banquette seating because the benches are actually kitchen units for storage. We don't have a utility room etc so wanted to work seating and storage into the space. We are a small family with young children so yes, it's all about casual dining and homework. We're planning on getting a couple of chairs so we're not all bunched up in the corner.

I love banquettes. Wish I had a space for one. I think they are cozy and practical.

Another banquette lover here. Ours has a 42" pedestal table and it is usually one person on each bench and then one person in each chair to seat four so no one is trapped. One of the most popular places to sit in our house....not just for meals.

I happen to love banquette seating; it warms up the kitchen with textiles and, as you point out, can be configured for additional storage. In this case, I might recommend a rectangular or square pedestal table instead of a round. We did a corner banquette for a family in their kitchen, and they love it.

Thank you! I must admit I've been massively panicking after the range of comments as the kitchen is literally being ordered in the next couple of days. I'm looking into the option of losing the bench area underneath the window but I do love the idea of the kitchen flowing into that space without sudden gaps.

    Hi Sabrina,

I agree about avoiding the circular table but am struggling to find a square/rectangular pedestal option. We may very well end up making our own.

    Small children LOVE it too!

They can be on their knees with their projects, not having some unwieldy chair sliding around underneath them.

There is a sense of community in having a banquette.

A booth in a kitchen can be a good place for a kid to do homework, or to grab a cup of coffee for a casual conversation, but not necessarily the place to eat daily dinner because of the movement limitations.

Sherrilyn, yes, you might indeed have to have a table custom made for it to fit properly.

found a couple non-round pedestal tables. It will take a little internet searching.

I'm based in the UK so I'm finding it a little tricky finding a suitable table that fits the style we're looking for without blowing the budget! Its a bit industrial so I've seen some quirky tables made out of salvaged wood/pallets. Any advice on the size I should go for based on the dimensions of the corner banquette? My brain isn't good at maths!

Thank you Everdebz but the bench units are going to be the same style as the main kitchen units. Lovely banquettes though!

We had a banquette in our last home, and loved it. We had a custom table built (by my husband) to fit the space. The table was one of the few items we kept when we moved. We are actually building another nook to fit the table in our new home. We have never had a complaint about getting “stuck.” In fact, many of our guests prefer to be on the back wall. All it takes is sliding out. Heck, there’s a reason most restaurants have a lot of booths, we always request the booth when eating out.

    Lynda that banquette is epic!

This is the sort of table I'm thinking of... just need an idea of size...

Has to be round for that location.

24" is needed for each seat at the table. I don't believe you have the room for the table to extend out 4' into the room without always hitting the corner of the table.

Thank you Beverley. So what size would you suggest?

    48' or 54'?

I don't understand why people advise you against it. We've had a small one (table is only 36 x 36) for years and love ours. If I had it to do over, I would have made the table a bit larger but it still works fine for 4 of us. I love having the hidden storage !

    Hi Sherrilyn,

I measured ours, maybe this will help?

Table is 36 inches (914mm) wide and 48 inches (1219mm) long.

Our banquette is 63 inches (1600mm) by 53 inches (1359mm)

If you look at my pic, you will see one side is longer than the other, which is exactly what I needed.

I also allowed extra room to get in/out easily, which is another reason why I chose this particular banquette.

having the pedestal (for us) is paramount, tall hubs can easily slide in/out without hitting any table leg.

I also do not at anytime have the table pushed so far in that your first thought is "oh my God, how am I ever going to squeeze in there?"

Our banquette was custom made by a carpenter back in the 70's if that helps.

We also do not have a banquette with chairs or a round table though. You said you had children, are any in high chairs?

Hi janue, thank you so much for the information! Your banquette measurements - did you measure from the back of the seats? My measurements are the front of the seats... let me see if I can get the back too...

And no, they're now 6 and 3 so I high chairs needed anymore

I measured from the back, along the wall...hubs also customized ours, he put in electrical outlets on the bottom of the seats which I love, I use them for when I iron on top of the table.

Looking at the plan, the back is 77 inches by 85 inches

Maybe a table that is 46 inches by 58 inches?

Put some painters tape on your floor and spec that out, see how you like it!

I think that's what I'm going to have to do - wait until it's built and then take it from there. I was hoping it would all be ready at the same time but that's just wishful thinking!

The kids can be seated in the corner until they finish their meals. Of course, someone will want to go to the bathroom at every meal until they learn to go first. They can learn to plan ahead. Then the teens will never want to be in the corner. Of course, adults don’t want to have to scoot in either. I vote for table and chairs plus only one banquette w/ storage.
