Shiplap and trim same color white?

We are doing a major remodel on our house. This is my first remodel and I’m doing the design work by myself. I’m overwhelmed with all the choices that need to be made. So, I’ve come to this board asking for simple advice.

In our living room, we are doing one wall in shiplap (stairwell), one wall with built ins and one wall with drywall. For now, I want the room white. Should I paint everything the same color including the trim or should the trim be in a different shade of white? Or would it be better to do same color white but with matte paint finish on shiplap and built ins, eggshell on drywall and satin or semi-gloss on trim?

I fail to see the charm of shiplap. Reminds me of the cheap white siding on our farmhouse front porch many, many years ago. Why in the world would someone want that on the inside of their home? It's worse than 1960's wood paneling.

Not too thrilled with board and batten either. JMHO.

I do agree with Jan that we need a lot more information to advise and permitsa renot required to add trim to a home.

Plain painted walls do not need "added interest" if the design is cohesive. They are a backdrop to everything else. Too many busy visual cues often make a room seem frenetic rather than calming, or welcoming, or whatever mood you are trying to create. Post your floor plan and idea boards as well as some pictures. I'm sure that you can get some suggestions then.

Came here to ask this same question and wonder what you ended up doing, you got some pretty harsh responses!! Design is personal, and your home will never feel outdated or out of style if you design it with things you love. I'm planking a wall because I love it, it does add interest, and a clean fresh (removable) way to add character to a home that may be lacking the vibe you're after. I hope you went with what your heart wanted!!

I hope you didn’t let any of the above idiots affect your decision with exception to “Glo Windows”

it it is a very good question, and it doesn’t need a picture to answer correctly, they all should have their “pro” status stripped if they can’t answer a simple question....so concerned with their own simple minded opinions then to just give you advice.

I had the same question when doing our accent wall, that dirty word “ship lap” I love it!! Have always loved it, and love the refined finished versions we have seen in the past 10 years.

we have crown and built ins as well. after playing around with it we went with high gloss for the crown and built in, matte or flat finish of the same paint for the ship lap!

it all comes down to personal preference but this is the most common combo i have see in model homes and custom jobs locally!!

Do what you loooove and it will never be dated huh? Ridiculous. Most people have no inherent taste of their own, and follow trends like all of their friends and TV. Faddish and overdone always looks riculous in hindsight. Whether that’s shiplap or white subway or shag carpet or Zbrick. All of which cycle in and out. But with just enough changes to not make the last cycle still fashionable.

Paint the trim and shiplap the same color. I am in the process of painting my entire house and learned that two close shades of white on trim and walls do not look as good as keeping the same color on both. Keep it simple.

Shiplap walls sold my home in one week. Everyone who came in commented how much they loved it and how much character it gave the house!!

That looks amazing!!! I’m really glad you posted pictures and I’m even more happy that you didn’t let the earlier commentary dissuade you!!

Scottflora it looks FANTASTIC!! I love that so much! So clean, and doesn’t conform to a certain design. You did great, this has me so excited for mine to go up!!

So beautiful! I LOVE it! We are building a farmhouse on my land, and I am considering doing the dining room shiplap (very open plan, so dining room is visible from kitchen, etc). People can be mean about it! I think it's so nice done right. Yours is perfect! Your cabinet work is beautiful!

mmstutz, I used White Picket Fence from Dunn Edwards for the white paint color.

Wow!! Beautiful job.. Happy you went with what YOU loved..

Outstanding, it turned out beautiful. And on a selfish note, I just love it when those old tired posters above get proved wrong...............

Note: no apologies coming from the old tired posters. Sigh.

Meh. I don’t ask my mom’s advice for fashion, even though she’s been dressing herself far longer than I have.

Sometimes old and tired really is old and tired.

Looks great : ) Love ,Mum.

Be kind to the "mommies" who do design every day. We get STYLE and fad/trend fatigue a lot faster than homeowners. No different than the meal you spent eight hours preparing, and then lost your appetite for when you sat your guests to EAT it lol. But, like your mom, it hardly negates all the other good advice........from her "old and tired" wise soul. Btw..... bet I can beat you in a five mile walk too ?!

Just to comment, I am not a shiplap fan but my DIL did it on two walls in her home and it sold in four days, two buyers stating that they loved the Hgtv look of the bungalow, it was also a bidding war of four! Much as I was against it they proved me wrong!

Ours went up and we had a realtor look at the house today and she said shes been flipping houses in the next town over and theyre selling like hotcakes once she adds the shiplap. ALL things age and fade, but I want to enjoy the house I have. All houses age. Early 2000s neutrals everybody thought theyd be able to keep look very outdated and worn now, times change, nothing is immune.

Did you paint the walls and ceiling the same color? If so, what paint color? It looks fantastic!!! Well done!

    Hi Dawn,
I painted it the same color. I felt it would give it a modern look. I used Dunn Edwards White Picket Fence. Thank you for the nice comment!

Looks great! Glad you went with your gut and did what you love. It’s ok to have an differing opinion but people get turned off when your overly arrogant about it. Just sayin...

Dang, some of these comments are harsh, I’m currently doing a brand new added room all in Ship Lapp and am loving it thus far..it will be beautifully paired with a oiled finish reclaimed floor, the room will be decorated with select pieces..we all have different tastes and shouldn’t bash anyone for what they like..

Beyond Beautiful!! So glad you didn’t let the early on style free traditional loving crabby pros derail your plan because the results are amazing(: if you don’t mind what color/brand of paint did you go with for your shiplap? I’m in the process at looking at millions of whites trying to decide
  • 6 years ago

love it! I'm doing wide shiplap on my wall around my fireplace

love the room!! can you share where the large wall clock is from?

Gosh people can be so annoying. You asked about wall color. Why can’t they answer the question? We just added shiplap. I love it. I don’t care if it’s over done. Do what you love! I had the same question. Shiplap-trim color or Shiplap-wall color. We choose trim. That way it pops a little more even though the walls are white too just a warmer white.

Just found this post as I have the same question. Thank you for sharing your photos, your remodel came out beautiful! I am using shiplap for one wall in an office and will go with the same white as the trim color except in eggshell instead of semi-gloss like the trim. I wanted to do all four walls in shiplap but was overruled by my husband and everyone else lol. I decided to paint the remaining three walls in a light wheat color for some contrast. We have interior black windows and black office furniture and hardwood floors. Fingers crossed it will all come together.

Hi Ilana. The walk clock was purchased years ago. I honestly don’t remember. I’m sorry! If you have a Hobby Lobby in your area they have some nice wall clocks.

Jill we used Dunn Edwards White Picket Fence.

You started this post 1.5 yrs ago and I stumbled upon it only because I was torn whether to paint wall and trim of my shiplap the same. I too wrestled with the "shiplap" question but my home is a small 2-level beach house and I felt shiplap conveys the beachy rustic feel I want for my family and guests. I pray my renovation pictures look as beautiful as yours. I got the answer I was searching for! Thanks!!

DawnD12! I’m so glad you found your answer! I’ve never regretted my decision and I love my shiplap as much today as I did 1 1/2 years ago. I would do the same thing if I remodeling today. Good luck with your remodel. I’m positive your remodel will come out looking fabulous! Enjoy!

I love the shiplap wall! It sounded like you used the same color for walls and trim. Did you use the same finish for everything too? Is everything on that wall is the same color and finish? I have a shiplap wall in a small powder room and I'm trying to decide how to treat the shiplap, door/window trim and walls in room where I'd like everything to be some variation of white.

Hi Shana. Yes I painted everything and same color and paint finish. I’m glad I did it that way. Thank you and good luck with your project!

Can I ask what color and brand of paint you used and what finish too? It's beautiful!

Thank you Julie! The color I used was Dunn Edwards “White Picket Fence”. I can’t remember the finish but I’m going to take a stab. I painted the walls “eggshell” and the trims, shiplap and built ins the “low sheen”. I would go to Dunn Edwards and ask for their sheen chart to see which works for you.

I’m team shiplap! This is is beautiful! I’m having same problem. We are keeping our old trim of the house. I’m thinking of painting the walls alabaster and then all shiplap, wainscot, builtins, kitchen cabinets Simply White by Benjamin Moore

I’d love to see a picture when you’re done!

I can't believe some of the comments. OP didn't ask for opinions about shiplap so I don't know why people think they need to insert their opinion on something outside of what is being asked except to be nasty!

I'm in the same dilemma. Our trim/cabinets are going to be SW Pure White and walls SW Eider White but not sure if trim should be Pure White or Eider White! I love the way it is shaping up in my house and did more than shiplap for the nasty people, we also did simple board & batten look in places.

If shiplap does become dated, then one can always do what we’ve done for ages and replace it, just like shag carpet, olive green tile and laminate countertops.

But if you love the look as I do, and you’re happy with your space, you don’t need to be shamed as if you’re an uneducated peasant. Often what professional designers think is fabulous will seem garish and cold to the average “peasant” person. I believe any material done tastefully will never go out of style, although it may not appeal to the taste of a future buyer.

The pictures posted here of tasteless 70’s fads do not fairly compare to the clean lines and character of today’s shiplap. I can find plenty of examples of high dollar interior design work that would make one’s eyes bleed.

That being said, I would go with a matte white on the shiplap and a satin white on the trim.

UPDATE: I wanted to share with you @scottflora some of my living room / kitchen pictures of my renovated home. Again, I so appreciate the encouragement to move forward. I walk in my front door and beam with delight at my shiplap walls. It makes my beach house feel like a beach home!

    Love it! It’s beautiful.

@Dondi12 your home is beautiful ! We are in the process of a remodel. Adding shiplap over wallpaper that I’m ready to say goodbye to. What did you end up doing with your paint choices for trim & shiplap. I am having the majority of our home painted and I am at loss as to what white to choose. Currently, it’s between SW White Flour & SW Alabaster for shiplap and plain walls. With Pure White (I think that’s the name) for trim.

@Dondi12. Your home turned out stunning!!! Thank you for sharing your photos. I know how you feel about walking in your home. I’m so happy I chose the shiplap. I’ve never regretted it!

What's in a name? I think if the question were "horizontal paneling" instead of "shiplap" maybe there wouldn't be such negativity. Shiplap was made popular by the Fixer Upper folks, so there's a lot of negative connotations about it. There's nothing wrong with adding any type of wood paneling to a room, I think it adds character. Like the photos shown by some of the homeowners, the paneling looks to be installed well, and will hold up and look beautiful for many years!
