I don't know where to start

I'm tired of my living room looking so plain and not meshing together. I wanted to go for "comfortable glam", but I really don't know what direction to go in. I can't even decide on what type of rug to purchase. The only new purchase I've made so far is an electric fireplace. That's as far as I've got. Any advice is welcomed

it is a lovely large room. why do you have 2 different sofas? do they serve 2 purposes? is there another wall?

the space was so open on the wall where the window is I just put something there. the couch was elsewhere. I paid so much for the couch I don't have the heart to get rid of it. if I found something else, I would put the couch in a spare bedroom since it is a sofa bed

I'd suggest staying neutral on the rug because you have that fabulous red couch in the room that needs to be the star. I rather like this style of rug -- plain, but with a bit of glam in the border. Add art. Clear mantel, but do place something on each side to replace the Christmas flowers (?) -- two bronze vases could look good, and bring them in a bit from the outer edges so that they just overlap with the sides of the screen. I've done that on the left with the red flowers to show that a bit of overlap doesn't hurt.

if you really want a change, I would start with all new everything . Find a beautiful rug with a pattern and colors you love, then take a neutral color that works with the rug and use that as your color for your sectional. Add pillows that pull in the colors and try to find materials with different textures, When you find new drapes make sure they are not too long like the ones you have now. Good luck

I don't have specific advice except that I don't think you need all new everything. Your red sofa could benefit from some side tables and lamps ;-) Choose something with the glam vibe you admire. Rugs with your colors shouldn't be too difficult to find. Post a layout of the space and then the group can go from there.

Are you attached to the wall colour? Or would you consider painting? You only need a few finishing touches to bring everything together

    Lot's of possibilities here!

Please post more photos of the space. My recommendations so far"

-please remove the sofa to another room

-take the sectional and move it away from the wall. Float it closer to the fireplace.

-Do you find the tv to high to view. It seems very high, but as long as you are okay with it.

-I recommend a different coffee table to break up all the beige.

-I recommend a rug & possibly a couple of chairs.

-Your sectional cushions need to be re-stuffed.

Once you get the furniture situated, you can work on decor.

Your space should feel more like this, with plenty of room to walk around the sectional.

Yet another room without side tables and lamps...

If you want to start from scratch, I'd start by going through houzz, decorating magazines, etc. and look for rooms that you'd like your room to look like. That will give you a direction and a style to go for.

I'd also suggest looking on youtube for christopher lowell's 7 layers of design. What's really missing from your room are the final layers such as plants, accessories, lighting, art.

Also, the color scheme is very beige, brown neutral. I'd want to add some pattern, some texture, some shine and more color.

I like your choices so far, but I’m confused. Is the sectional blocking a doorway? If so, it needs to be relocated. More pictures and measurements please.

This is the problem with playing it safe with neutrals--it ends up being a sea of beige. If you're inclined to keep your loveseat, find a rug that has that orange and teals/greens in it. Do the same for your throw pillows and drapery panels. Get rid of the upholstered ottoman and get a wood coffee table instead. The goal is to have a mixture of color, texture, and shine to pull it together. Here are a couple of examples of "neutral done right":

Yes, the sectional is too big. Just because you can get it in there doesn't mean it fits. Sofa, a couple of chairs, end tables, maybe a sofa table, lamps, either floor or table lamps, a room size rug (don't buy the store's 5x7 on display), then personalize it with pictures, mementos, books, things you like. But first of all, the sectional is too big.

LOL! Sophie, you crack me up! I always love your comments!

On to the question at hand:

I understand wanting to keep the sectional. Those things cost a load and are as comfortable as they are anti-design. I'm not going to pick on your sectional.

I do, however, agree that it needs to be moved away from the walls. Float the sectional in front of the fireplace. You almost want it centered in the room. We (Americans) have a tendency to line our walls with furniture, but this makes a room feel crowded and limited in options. Turn it so one side faces the window and the other faces the fireplace. Now you have a view.

Rule 1: Never, NEVER buy furniture to fill a blank space. This is how you end up with this room. You thought, "There's space under the window. It must need another sofa." No. Just, no. Furniture is to be purchased only to fulfill a function, never to fill a space. Go ahead and move your red sofa to another room. If it's a sleeper, great, you now have a guest room.

If you "need" something to go under a window, then look for something useful. Do you have lots of books that need a home? How about a long, low book shelf? Do you need more seating in this room? Opt for a couple of chairs that can create a conversation circle with the sectional. Need somewhere to hide some throws and board games? Find an appropriate credenza. But don't buy a sofa just because you have some empty space on the floor. Please. Please.

Okay, now you have a seating area, but what about that crazy ottoman? Unless you live in the Taj Mahal, that ottoman is way too much. I know it "came with" the sectional and it "matches" the sectional. But it's the size of a baby elephant. (Okay, we're just gonna pick on the sectional a little bit.)

Need somewhere to put your feet up? Okay, how about a contrasting ottoman with a tray on it to act as a coffee table? Or better, a quad of ottomans so you can actually use one in each seat?

But I'm not a fan of ottomans. So I am going to say a low, square, NOT HUGE coffee table would be a better option in this space, if you need a surface in front of the sectional. If you don't need a surface, refer to Rule 1.

NOW we finally get to the fun part!

Let's talk about your wall color. Do you love it? No? I'm not really surprised. Paint is the cheapest and most dramatic way to change the feel of a room. Grab some paint chips and take them home (ALWAYS look at paint samples in the room where they will be used), and look at them with the sofa and in the light.

As for the fireplace, you don't really love that red brick, do you? I didn't think so. Let's just do a simple whitewash or paint it white. It will go well with the paneling on the walls and stop reminding you of a fire engine.

Let's look for some lamps, maybe a comfy throw, some bold, pretty art for the walls, and you're basically done. If you want to go with a glam feel, then let your materials reflect that, with chrome and nickle, glass and mirrors. If you want a comfy vibe, then opt for natural materials and soft fabrics.

You don't have to start from scratch, but you do need to stop trying to play it safe with beige if beige isn't what you love.

I hope this novella helps. Good luck!

We haven't seen whole room, but knowing how pros sometimes suggest painting the back of shelves, I wonder what you think of that: bringing attention to yours. Like your red sofa - could paint it a muted red, or other accent from what's in other rooms.

That's a mirror there? Must be a way to make it more glam / art.

Is other opening to kitchen? Do you like stained glass? Expensive, breakable, but could look cool there.

Even resin panels with not grasses [!] but something cool.

    LED lighting somewhere?

You have some very nice built-in bookshelves around the doorway. Please use them the way they were intended.

The curtains, which are too long, are also too beige and the texture seems odd (shiny? crinkly?) and are not doing the room any favors. Plus they are adding to that "sea of beige".

Never, NEVER buy furniture to fill a blank space.

This. A thousand times this. How do you use this room, tjames, besides watching television? Or how would you use it if it were set up better? I realize this is a bit of a Catch-22 because you're still trying to figure out just how to set it up, but ideally, how do you see yourself, your partner/family, friends using this room? What do (would you do) in the room?

Your sketch, and this pattern is lively, but imo the "paint strokes" don't blend with good wood flooring.

everdebz I picked out the rug thinking I could add some color, but as I looked at the rug online it read cheap to me. So I stepped away from that particular rug.

I copied another of your ideabooks, and with similarly sized opening on nearby wall, I think you could buy a canvas / or frame fabric somehow, for over it:

i don't like that particular example, but yes table, lamps, throws, beaded pillows, plush rug, etc.

Hi. Let's start here: do you have to keep the sectional or would you be okay with the red sofa and some chairs.

We need either more photos or a floor plan to help you further. Thank.

I wouldn't give up on your sectional just yet. Take a photo showing each entire wall, that's all!

I saw your boots - what about animal hide, real or faux?

I've thought about animal hide, but my fear is it will only cover a small area. but if I float the couch as suggested it may work. I've seen one I liked on zgallarie
  • 7 years ago

What about a well done framed canvas over the mirror - a good place for it, though large....

Is that your entry around the corner and down the hall from that red sofa?

If so, I think the first problem you need to address is storage for things like footwear and whatever that other stuff is to the right of the curtain and red sofa. You are dropping things there without a dedicated "drop zone" or closet area, and your living room is suffering for it.

Thanks for the additional photos. One thing that looks very odd in the room is the fact that on one side there is wainscotting and an arched opening/on the other side no wainscotting and a squared off opening. That will have to be corrected at some point.

Before you add any decor, you have to get your arrangement worked out.

_If you want a more glam space, I'd do away with the sectional and keep the red sofa.

_I'd remove the wainscotting and place the tv to the left of the pass-through to the kitchen.

-float the red sofa facing the tv.

-add a couple of chairs on the side where the opening is with the bookcase around it.

-add a rug and coffee table

There is nothing you can do to make that ocean of beige upholstery "glam". Beige and glam are contradictory.

Lots of beige sofas and a hint of glam here. rooms

ok tj, i feel like we are forging through quickly and not getting enough feed back. you have not said yet which sofa you want to keep in there?

You really should put the tv on the wall the sectional is on and then face one of them towards it but not on a wall.

i think you will find that most of us would love to decorate for the red couch, but i will start with that huge sectional. Also i would love a little input as to colors you would like. In this case tell me if you like a rug or two i give you, that will be used to set the mood of your room. i will then look up where you go to get them.

I would remove the mirror and wainscoting. I like the idea of moving the tv to the pass-thru wall, floating the sofa and adding a chair or two. The sectional seems too frumpy for the main living space. Love the first picture from CDR Design.
