What does your kitchen look like? How much space do you have on either side of the range? A chimney hood doesn't need to be bigger than the range but you typically need 3-6" clearance on each side before the cabinets begin. Post a photo of the existing layout so we can get a better idea of the space. You've got to take into account the visual space, as well.

Also, if you can't afford to buy a quieter hood, then go with an under-cabinet hood. The specs include the sound rating (sones). Don't buy something you'll regret later on.

A chimney hood typically has a stronger draw than a under-cabinet hood. Esthetics is important, too, so make sure you've got an experienced designer working on your kitchen. They can tell you what your particular kitchen needs. I'm sure Sophie will correct me if I'm wrong ;), but people started using commercial ranges in their kitchens and that required them to use commercial-strength hoods, at least, that when I saw them become big. You can use a smaller chimney hood for a freestanding range with no problem, though.

Thank you; it makes sense that more "hood power" needed for commercial style cook tops. I am not going that route at this point, preferring the glass top for esthetics of clean lines for my space as well as not needing to clean heavy grates. Might have done that in the past but not looking for the big, industrial look.. Thank you for the feedback.

You don't have to go big industrial. They've got them scaled for regular kitchens.

The drawing power is rated in cfm (cubic feet per minute), so you can compare the two types. In my experience, the more powerful they are, the more noise they make, but of course they work better.

The powerful ones also need make up air.
