Need Ikea curtain hack ideas - curtain mavens?

New house, lots of projects, not lots of $$ left ;-)

I threw these curtains up in a hurry because for an hour or so in winter the angle of the late afternoon sun is blinding - not an issue in the summer. These are Ikea Lenda in white, one panel per window. They are not hemmed, I just turned over the top and clipped on rings but now I'm ready to fluff them. There is a media cabinet in the works that will span window to window so curtains need to open to the outside of each window as shown. I have a second set of the curtains to use for more fullness.

What I'm debating about should I use pleater tape (and if yes which kind) or use the clips to create a sort of pleat or ?? Not sure what other curtain ideas are out there but I'm open. Tabs will come off, they will be properly hemmed but I'm unsure how to make the top. Also, will a second full panel be too much fabric - would 1 - 1/2 panels be enough? I will sew them together and am not worried about the vertical seam. Goal is to have them look tailored and simple but finished.

You can see the shadow of the tabs - quite a look, huh?! They are just a bit wider than the window, no fullness at all when closed.

Will two full curtain widths be too much? I can open the curtain rods a bit more but not much, maybe 3" or so. I do want the curtains to hang to the sides of the windows and not obscure the view when open.

This is the Lenda fabric - simple but a nice hand.

And lastly. this larger window will likely get the same curtains at some point but again, will be open 99% of the time.

    Curious of the answer too.

How wide are they and how wide are your windows? Two times fullness is standard. I recently purchased ready made curtains and added Dritz clip ring tape. I needed to shorten them anyway so I did it from the top. There are 2 different areas to clip the rings allowing you to make sure the actual clips don't show. I'm very happy with the way they turned out

Oh, DLM, you are such a tease. When is the official reveal?!?

clt3 that tape sounds interesting - and easy! I'm all about the easy at this point. It doesn't make any pleats though, right? You'd have to fuss a bit each time you open them to get them into even folds or pleats? I'm off to look for examples and/or video - thanks for that tip.

bpathome I keep saying 'when I get *this" done or *that* done I'll be willing to show but you know how it is - there's always something that isn't done (in my case a lot of somethings) so I decide to wait until..... I don't know, perfection? Not gonna happen! I need to get over it, right?!

Deb, your window are beautiful - don't you hate to cover them up? I understand the need for light control, tho. Once the media cabinet is in place, maybe some kind of roman shade or pleated shade would look better. If you do end up using some kind of curtain there, I think 1.5 times the width would be sufficient.

How was your trip in December to meet your first grandchild? When did he/she arrive?

You can easily convert a tab to a back-tab drapery. I have added a link, but there are also some You tubes available. http://sewmanyways.blogspot.com/2013/11/how-to-turn-tab-top-curtains-to-back.html  Google: converting tab draperies to back tab.

The process is basically pushing the tab down behind the drape and securing. It's a cleaner look than using all the rings. If you are not sure of the look, try using a large safety pin to secure the tabs.

I would use two panels per window. I used ikea tab drapes in my bedroom. I’m not a sewer, so I cut off the tabs, folded over, and used hem tape to make a rod pocket.

How to use the Dritz drapery tapes - they also have back tab tape: Dritz drapery tapes You could certainly do pinch pleats whether the traditional way or with pleater tape, but those seem kind of formal for your room.

clt3 - our local Joann doesn't carry the clip ring tape of course! I really just just want to plow ahead and do single pleats but am afraid it's going to be more measuring than I want to deal with :-/ so am ordering the tape from Amazon and it'll be here Sat. Nothing is ever easy!

Congratulations, Deb, on the birth of your first grandchild, Juniper!! You removed the pictures before I had a chance to reply. She is adorable and wow, look at all that hair!! Being a grandparent is THE BEST!!!!!

Good luck with the tape you ordered from Amazon. I hope it's a pretty easy way to achieve the look you're wanting. It does make sense to have drapery panels in your room instead of the fabric roman shades as I suggested earlier. It appears to be a large room and of course, as you mentioned, they will help with sound echoing. Please share pictures of the completed project. BTW, I love your wall color as well as the exposed beams you have in your room. I, as well as many others, I assume, look forward to seeing more pictures of your new home...................when you're ready.

I got uncomfortable about the pictures - sorry! She's my little June Bug <3 and yes being a grandparent is the best but they are so far away :-(

Walls in the whole house are the same color B/M Natural Cream and it just works for us so well. More pictures to come, I promise.

I completely understand about the pics of your granddaughter. I'm glad I got a little peek of the darling June Bug. Love the nickname!!!

We are hoping to repaint soon. I'll consider BM Natural Cream, for sure. Thanks for the info.

I have the Lenda draperies in my bedroom. They were too long and I didn't like the tabs. I cut the tabs off and bought a kit to convert to grommets. It was easy, fast and I'm happy with how they turned out. It's great that Ikea drapes are so versatile!

Here's the update because it's nice to know how things turn out, not because I'm particularly proud of them! You wouldn't think combining 4 panels into 2 curtains would be much of a project but not one of the panels was the same length or width and wrangling that length of fabric was challenging for me. Oh, well, they're done, they perfectly filter the sun when needed and if I don't focus on them they are a nice element in the room. As the t=room gets worked on with new upholstered furniture and the media cabinet I think they'll matter even less in the design scheme. Squint and they look perfect ;-)

Thank you again clt3 for the ring tape recommendation - I like the way it works and it does add a nice flow to the curtains.

They look great! Ring tape is much better than the exposed clips!
