Hot Mess Dining Room Heeelp!

Hi! Please Help me decorate my dining room. We have been in this house for 2 yrs and due to life this has been our junk room. So ignore the junk. It was hard to get a pic but the room really isn't this dark.

So what can I do to make this space look nice? I want a new light fixture I like Orbits but not sure if they would work.

**The table is here to stay we are renovating the kitchen and bathrooms so no room in my budget for a new one yet.**

What can I put on the wall I hate the circle mirrors but have been too lazy to take them down.

Here are some pics the wall repeating the kitchen will be coming down so it will be open to the kitchen

Thanks!

So you are doing a kitchen reno and the dining area will be open to the kitchen? If that's the case, your new design should incorporate the entire area in one cohesive plan.

Are you patching in some spare tile where the wall currently is? Or replacing the tile? Semi-permanent features such as flooring are key when choosing new colors for paint and rug.

The floor will remain the same patching in spare tile. We are replacing the cabinets/backsplash/counters etc. I want to pick the dining room light fixture before I figure out the island lighting since it will be open.

My first suggestion would be a beautiful rug to warm up this space. Try to cover as much of the tile as possible. The pictures on either side of the arch appear to be hung too high. You do need some colorful wall art instead of the mirrors.

I won't do anything until the wall is down. Once it's down you will have many more options to tie it into the kitchen area.

Since you plan to remodel and take down a wall I would not do much yet. Perhaps you could get some new curtains. Raise the curtain rod to ceiling height, widen the rods to 12 inches outside the window frame on each side and make sure length of curtains is enough to kiss the floor. Then only other thing I would do is swag the light so it is centered over the table. If you don't love the art remove it and leave the wall blank for a while. You might find inspiration while doing the kitchen. In the meantime, a blank wall is better than a wall you hate.

Thanks for the suggestions what do you reccomend for lighting? I'm not sure how it works they are coming next week to do the kitchen I just don't want to be stuck in a bind ordering at the last minute. I am going to take the mirrors down today

What are you doing for lighting in the kitchen? Lighting doesn't have to match but it should coordinate (similar finish/style) since you are doing an open floor plan.

Budget $200, $500, other for chandelier? Hardware finish?

You have no idea at this point how everything is going to look in real life. Get the wall down. Get the kitchen done or nearly so. If you have to reuse the light you have now for a while until you figure out a new light, so be it. Better than buying a light that doesn't work when all is redone.

One thing you can plan for now is the location of the chandelier. I'm assuming you will have an electrician in the house for kitchen lighting, so take this opportunity to relocate the dining fixture so you won't have to swag.

Start with a major clean-up. You will be astounded at how much better everything looks.

I love your dining set and the chandelier isn't that bad really. If you are hating your dining room right now and impatient for change, get yourself and awesome floral centerpiece and set it in the middle of the table and open up the drapes and let in the light. For example, right now I am still lovin' up on a beautiful poinsettia in the center of my dining room table. Find something pretty and colorful for the table. It can always be changed out. And then like others have said, when the kitchen blow out is done you can re-assess.

Thanks for the comments everyone I am being rather impatient. Budget for the lights is 1500 for 3 pendants, a light for our eat in area and the dining room. Finish brushed nickel. I am cleaning up and at least gettinf the toys and junk out. Thank you

Looks like you probably moved the table off-center to accommodate the buffet, which looks like it may have been displaced by a toy doll house?

Will the buffet move, or will the light fixture move? Will the table move closer to the kitchen when the wall comes down, to give you more room around the table? I'd like to see the buffet away from the window, but that may have to wait until the dollhouse is outgrown? What is that area on the end of the dining room?

Are you 100% committed to brushed nickel for your dining room? I think the dark furniture may look better with a darker/warmer finish. What is the finish on your kitchen cabinets? You can easily have the lights' finish in the kitchen match the dining room fixture and still use a different finish on your cabinet hardware if you desire.

It's really hard to make suggestions about light fixtures without some idea the direction you want to go with one.

the area at the end is our living room it is an L shaped room here is a photo. These are the cabinets. I plan on adding hardware once I decide on some.

I like these type of fixtures just from browsing Lowes and Home Depot

And the buffet will move I'm not committed to anything in this room lol

Properly fit and hung drapes will make a difference. Art or mirrors (most don't like to watch themselves eat) should center at 5' above the floor or hang 5" above furniture. If you use a rug it will need to be much bigger than your table top. The chairs should pull out and be sat in without falling off the rug. Rug should not run into walls or furniture on the walls. Personally, I prefer dining lights to throw light to the ceiling so the food on the table isn't washed out by the spotlight effect and diners don't have ugly nose and hair shadows on their faces. The addition of candles for special dinners and entertaining should adequately enhance both food and guests.

I want to check if your chandelier is the kind that can be hung the other way - with lights facing up? I don't mind your curtains - it's true designers wouldn't recommend 63" but in your space they seem neat and trim [that's how I put it]. :)

Here are some pictures of rooms with similar pendants to the ones you like, just to give you some ideas of what other people have paired with those types of pendants:

But since your curtains have pattern and some other items have that color, maybe a large neutral flower [the right size]:

I was also looking for one with grit like the floor has in its texture [it seems]... this has another look: modern garden?

I would suggest possibly replacing the drapery with a fabric that has more thickness to it. I put together a rough sketch with some pieces that would liven the space up! Also, you could have light bulbs that produce more lumens to brighten the space up. Metallic/metal decor accessories will help to reflect light.

I would definitely change the dining chairs and possibly the credenza to lighter colours. All of the furniture pieces are quite dark, not all woods necessarily have to match each other as long as the tone of the wood finish compliments the other wooden pieces in the space. You could also have a large mirror placed horizontally instead of the painting seen in the sketch! Hope this helps!

I actually love the idea of changing the chairs out!!! Thank you I have a 4yr old and a 2 yr old though they typically eat in the eat in but I wonder if the light color would be smart down the road. @Songbird07 I love the last 2 fixtures your posted! Thank you

In that case it doesnt necessarily have to be light upholstery as long as the dining chairs differ in colour. It can even be a leather/vinyl type of texture so that it's easy to wipe down.

Semi update so the kitchen has started. I'm kinda nervous now about how open it is and how everything coordinates. So far I bought this for the dining room table same as recommended above

and I ordered these for the island

What should I get for this table on the right (circular one) I am actually thinking I need to get rid of one of them now that the wall is down

This is going to be a great space when you are done! What you put over the breakfast area depends on your new kitchen layout. Are you keeping the location of things the same or are you moving around the appliances, island, cabinets, etc? If you don't feel like you need two eating areas with tables you can incorporate the smaller one into your new kitchen design (maybe do a bigger island with seating? Or you could take that space for more living room space if you need the space for that. You might want to ask over on the kitchens forum what they recommend. It's hard to say what you can do without seeing a floorplan with the amount of space you have to work with.

Galilee Lighting, none of those lights seem to go with what she already bought. Just My Opinion.

Layout will be the same. I think we don't need 2 eat in areas. It's hard for me to visualize I will post an updated photo later I think they should have made more progress today.

We eat most of our meals in the dining room, but I don't have little kids. But my mom's best friend just told me that they ate dinner every night in the dining room. So maybe a bankette/breakfast nook for the space where the circular table is? I've always wanted built-in benches in my kitchen but never had the right kitchen.

That lighting store spams every post that mentions lighting.

Things are coming together. The lights I ordered came in and they are way larger than I expected. Should I do 2 lights or 3? The island will be small 5ft.

    Two. They are very nice.

Okay so i'm still needing help...didn't want to do a new post. This is the current photos. I need curtain recs and now that the wall is down the only place I can put the buffet is here. Any other placement ideas?

view from other side of living room...it is a L shaped living/dining.

Move the console away from the table by one floor square. It looks like the table is crowded with the console so close to it and the table pushed towards the wall. Are you able to turn the table 90 degrees or would that block the walkway to the kitchen too much?

Agree with Songbird07. To help it feel more spacious, remove the end chairs if not used on a daily basis and bring them out when needed. Curious, would the buffet be better placed near your kitchen set? Are you replacing the LR drapes also, or just the DR? Any art chosen for the DR?
Paint out the vent above the door to the wall colour.

I would like to replace all the drapes. Turning the table blocks the kitchen entrance way too much. We dont really have the storage to put the chairs away.

Okay, then just move the console and I think that will help.

What do you think about this "gallery" here. And would you still put something on the wall next to it? If so what?
