Living room is impossible to furnish

last modified: 7 years ago

My living/ dining area is just the worst lay out. It is a long, narrow rectangle shape with one wall devoted to sliding glass doors, the wall across from it is a partial wall that houses a staircase behind it. The corner isn't a corner because of a built in fireplace that comes out and creates another wall. Here are several pictures of different homes with my floor plan. Any ideas to make furniture look intentionally placed in ? Note that the wall across from sliding glass doors is a partial wall that angles down with a staircase on the other side of it.

Scootch the couch off the wall and arrange it like in the 2nd pic, with back of couch facing dining area. It's a nice divide in an open space. Lose the second couch on the wall, and put a side chair there, but not one wall, angled in to create a nice conversation space.

These are not your house, right? I'd use a sofa and two comfortable, medium size swivel recliners. The swivel recliners can go near the sliding doors.

this is my house, excuse the mess, we are still moving in and about to hang our curtains. We were going to do one long rod over both sliding glass doors, is that better than 2 seperate rods? The space between the sliding glass doors is 3 feet

Yes, I think you are right. One curtain rod over both doors if you can find one that is strong and long enough. You might not be able to get one long enough that looks good and is a reasonable price. You may find drapery rods that are reasonable only suitable for above one SGD door and not both doors together. Otherwise have separate rods at the same height. Hang the curtains above the upper window, very close to the ceiling for the best look. The current curtains are too low and not placed in the right spot on the window. See how the drapes are supposed to gather on the wall next to the windows/sliding glass doors? Not on top of them. See illustration below.

^One long rod hung close to the ceiling

^Or, if you are doing panels only that are not functional, then use the short rods on each side of the SGD's as shown above.

Yes, I wanted to do the rod high up (last owners actually put this one's directly into the frame). But the curtains I just got are 108" long and only allow about an inch or so over the the top window. My ceiling is very high, about 13 feet. see the end of rod, Will that look ok?

I think would look fine at 1" above top of window.

I have found that going to 120+ inch long drapes is easier ordered on line. In brick and mortar stores they typically don't carry the long drapes 120 inches or longer, but the online vendors have them in many colors and styles for a very reasonable price per panel without having to go custom. JCP has a sale going on right now https://www.jcpenney.com/g/120-inch-curtains-drapes/N-1b0lvh6D1noxaaZ1z13l82

Custom drapes may be in order.

Do you need TV viewing in this room? Hope not :) I would place your off-white chairs to each side of fireplace and one sofa angled toward fireplace. Remove the other chair--just not enough room for room to breath.

Dining--either replace the chandelier or look for round table.

Drapes: What did you select? Are they stationary or needed to open and close?

what if I put the tv over fireplace (we don't use it) with a built on entertainment center using cubes or shelves and we move the couch to the wall where the tv is and we move the accent chairs in front of the sliding glass door?

Maybe try repositioning of furniture and post pics for input.

In general, I am not a fan of TVs over FP. I would avoid in smaller space especially.

I would like the drapes to open and close. Ordered aged white wood 2 inch blinds for the rest of the windows. What color should i do the drapes? These are the 108" ones I bought and I am afraid they are too matchy with the dolphin fin gray walls.

You could leave the TV where it is and remove the bookcase that is crowding it out and move the chair to another location. If it were my place I would put the TV on a longer console.

OR, the other location for the TV is to the right of the FP, not above it.

^you could do a small built in like this one on the right side of your FP

Or you can put it on an articulating arm to the right of the FP and no built in.

If you need to open and close, you need double width panels. In general 2 1/2 to 3 times the width of the window (probably 2- 108' WIDE panels for each window). For length, mounting above transom as Denita suggested is best look. I would check out the jcp recommendation that Denita suggested. I'd look for a heavy linen; no sheen; no pattern. Lined for sun.

Dip you think a deep blood red curtain would be too much? I was afraid of browns because of the blue gray walls, but the one brown curtain looks good for contrast

I would place the tv on the wall above the fireplace and create the room around that. The other wall is too awkward. And the curtains I'm not sure where you're placing them, but a way to really update the space is to place them above the second window covering both windows about 2-4" above the molding. That would really make the space feel more complete, bigger, and homey!

What do you think of these curtains? Hubby hung them a bit low (we have an inch in a half pooling on the bottom, and I would have preferred that length used to raise the rod an inch or 2)

Can you do a sketch of the floor plan with dimensions? It would help tremendously. First, take overall dimensions of the entire space. Then start in the corner, go from the corner to the window frame > the window including the frame > wall , etc. Basically go all the way around the room. Do not leave out any measurements. Make a list of your furniture (just the big pieces) and the dimensions too. I would love to help!

what a difference a day makes! I am not there yet, but it's starting to feel like it's coming along. Any advise on a large address rug (that one is old and doesn't fit the space). Also, red drapes instead of the silver ones?

So much better! IMO no on the red drapes. I like the silver, but maybe a simple print and of course all the drapes should match. What about opening the drapes so that there are panels on each side of each window and getting off white sheers in the center of each window for light and privacy?

These will brighten up the space and compliment your furniture.

With a rug something like this to pick up the color of the sofa and wing chairs.

I like that! We actually ordered custom faux wood blinds for all the windows (except the sliding glass doors), so that awful half curtain in the back is temporary. But I like the ones you listed and I love that rug: )

Your room needs to take advantage of the great light you get from all those wonderful windows. You have perfect basics in the sofa and the wing chairs, so you can do just about anything. I really like the wing chairs flanking the fireplace and the back of the sofa towards the dining area. If you have the room you can put a narrow console behind the sofa for a lamp. After you decide on the curtains and rug, you can turn your attention to embellishing the fireplace since it is the focal point of the room. Nice space!

Thank you, the reason I didn't do sheers was because the living/ dining area gets very cold so I was trying to find blackout curtains that didn't look too heavy, but I will add some sheers into it!

Have you tried the sofa parallel to...and facing the fireplace?..make the fireplace location the focal point even if you really only have the tv there...the diagonal will make the room more interesting...create a more defined seating area...if there is room the two chairs can join the group by the fire place...didn’t get any input on how many people will use the space at the same time...

It does appear that you are trying to fit too much in the space...I would clear all the smaller stuff...put in the main furniture pieces you always use first...then add more pieces based on how important their function is...the stretchy pics on my screen are alway confusing as to the actual space size...the curtains to me can wait til the space is functioning well

There are 3 of us, my husband, daughter and myself. Honestly, the couch is not very comfortable and my husband and I like to lay down and watch movies. We had a sectional before we moved and that worked well but it was too big to bring with us. My father in law made the shelf and painted the tile on the fireplace (which I love). He has offered to help do a custom built in entertainment center on the fireplace down the road. Basically turning that awkward wall into a large shelving and cabinet armoire.

Halfpricedrapes.com has a great selection of 120” drapes and they’re having a sale right now. I bought all the drapes in my house from there after one of the designers here on Houzz told me about it. These are $49 perpanel before the discount and come in a ton of colors.

Putting the tv on the shelf you love above the fireplace is a good option ...as to the couch...the ideal solution would be a new couch with recliner feature at each end...until that can happen an ottoman at each end can get you pretty close to “laying down” to watch tv....they can also be separated from the couch for casual seating when you have company...a small sectional in a v-shape is another option but I always find it is more comfortable if your seating actually “faces” the tv ...love the idea of converting the fireplace ....in the future ....to a more useful purpose as well....another convenient option with the sofa parallel to the tv is a long console table behind the couch...at a convenient level to use in lieu of side tables if they don’t fit....and to also serve as a spot to add a bench beneath it for snacking or I-pad sessions while watching tv....when space is at a premium every spot should offer multi purpose and innovative functions
