century-old, partially remodeled farmhouse

last modified: 7 years ago

I have a budget of $2,200. $1,600 is going towards ripping up existing carpet, refinishing wood floors and staining them to the color of the trim work (not the orange color seen in foyer) This is a partially remodeled century -old farmhouse in No Michigan. This is the part of house that is original. Home featured brand new gourmet kitchen--the blend of old and new is what I love but this room looks tired. Being cozy around fireplace is a must. It needs to seat 5 comfortably for entertaining purposes. With exception of floral accent chair and blue sofa, everything else can go (i hate white love seat). I'll def be purchasing a rug, but what size? (room is a walk-thru to steps)...and what color? Large art piece also stays in room where it is. What would you remove from room?, and what big or small elements would you bring into the room to tie it all together and bring up to date?

moxie,,what did the one look like you ordered? can you post another pic? oh wait,,,was it this one?

    Home Depot has it

what do you think about an overdyed wool?

or do you want a multiple color one? others in the same 'Blossom' line,, diff colors

I do t think that was the rug for you. I would remain rugless and keep your eye out for a bargain on a real hand-knotted quality rug. Apparently Craigslist is a good place for deals, keep an eye on the DC market too if you know you will be traveling again

Oh Moxie, that's awful! I'm so sorry - hope you find something else that's even better. Meanwhile, happy Friday!

I always say if it wasn't meant to be it wasn't 'meant to be. I'm still voting for a less traditional rug in our space, especially since we have now seen your remodeled kitchen.

I like the first one Beth. It picks up on the light blue in the print above FB. I would a blue rug, sofa and accent chair be too much blue?

claire and beth-- those rugs are beautiful but I think Ive confused you all. The green rug that was on order and never showed up was for the living room with the FP. See pic below. Beth, I checked out my local HD and it wasn't in stock. Im back to square one with trying to find an 8x10 area rug that works in that room, with the accent chair and framed pic above FP. Ceiling light fixture and sconce arrived last week--Electrician hopes to come this week to install. (I need to start a new thread for the blue room with large windows and new scalamandre pillows...Im not looking for a rug in this room, just an ottoman and pillows for the brown sofa. Sorry to make a mess of things! )

I understand,,,,,so this rug pictured, you can't find. so we are looking for another one, possibly blue, to replace it? has to go w/the furniture and the painting.

Claire posted a nice blue one above,,,, and I think someone else posted your rug from another site. maybe try them to see if they have it? prob not if no one else has it in stock. did you like that same Blossom run in the lighter white/blue I posted (it's in a runner in the pic) ?

Clare's rug is out of my price range (but its beautiful). Beth, do you have a link for your blue rug option? Id like to see it. Thanks for the link to the original green rug yayagal. Im still drawn to this one. Perhaps this is another option?

Your home is not an Arts and Crafts bungalow. The stairs, the windows, and even the fireplace surround indicate that it is a Queen Ann “Victorian.” Late 19th, early 20th century. Not a farmhouse, either. Rather than Arts and Crafts antique furnishings, you should look at Eastlake furniture. You will find some beautiful tables and chairs, parlour tables, mirrors, etc. In oak, mahogany, etc. Good luck!

fun thread thanks for posting. I just wanted to add some words of caution: be sure to know how long your newly refinished floors need to cure before putting down your new rug

I prob spent 5 hours looking at rugs online today ha. Im reluctant to buy one that is mostly all-blue for fear of either the blues not matching or just there being too much blue. So Im focusing on multi-color rugs, using the art above FP. . Beth's 2nd suggestion:

    Beth's 1st suggestion (but I can't find it in 8 x 10):

here is the green one I can reorder that yayagal originally found:

    I found these two:

If you all convince me that a blue rug is the way to go, I do like this one from Beth:

I might start pulling my hair out soon.

i like them all. I know. big help. i do like the all blue one, but I like your original one too. and I like that one in white. a lot! get two of them and switch it out! lol. I will say, that last overdyed blue one, they are easy to care for. won't show stains, easy to vacuum. but the colors in the others are nice too. see which ones have the best return policy and get what you like, knowing you can always return it.

Just glanced over this whole thread. I think you need to take a step back and not think about anymore decor for this room until you have the floors redone. It is going to change everything.

Rug wise, I personally would go with a sisal, jute type of rug. This room and your hallway feel connected to me. Both have a number of great architectural features and wood work. Let the house speak for itself and let the architecture be the highlight of these rooms and the decor be a backdrop. The simplicity and beauty of your farm house is getting lost in too many color and decor ideas.

I have a 160 year old house and have chosen to use a really restrained touch in decorating so the pretty bones of the house can speak for themselves.

So the beautiful art piece must go above the fireplace. Preferably the blue sofa across fro it to balance it, maybe the mirror could go above it. Two chairs in the bay window with some sort of table between. The floral chair where the sofa was unless you find something to go with it in the bay window. The built ins need some accent pieces unless you must keep all the books, or do the stacking and color sorting of the bookshelves. Pull some color from that picture down and around. This is a fabulous room.

If you can’t get the one we all like, I like the one above your solid blue. It has a flowered medallion look with large gold flowers to bring the golds in the picture and light fixture down.

Etsy has lots of overdyed rugs if you are looking for one. I would love to s e a high quality traditional rug ground the space. Reds look so good with the blues. The patchwork rugs are fun: I got one on etsy for a great price (mine not shown)

Some examples of what I mean by traditional, works great with reds grounding the space

Lots of action happening over here. Ceiling fixture and scone were hung yesterday and today this started in the adjacent room (dining room).....

    Ooooh boy!

Tomorrow they tackle the living room with FP. greenfish I like those red rug suggestions. I def want a rug with red as either a main color or accent.

yes, I drooled when I saw that border in the hardwood flooring, hiding under wall-to-wall carpet. No such luck with the borders in the living room, but Im not complaining.

Coat 1 of 3. The patch in the center that wasn’t thread in properly will have to stay. Area rug will cover it.

Moxiekt your floors look great but one thing it looks like some of the planks are sticking out....is that just me.

Claire, nope they are all level. But maybe you’re seeing the gaps in between the planks that are typical for old floors. We choose to not fill them in. They still have to finish the toe trim.
