Is it weird to have a master closet with no doors?

tresmamma

I have a sitting room in my master. I am not a ”sitting room person” and would like to make it in to my closet. Currently my husband and I share a large walk-in closet that’s on the other side of the room (with a door). I am considering not having doors put on because 1. Not sure if it would be super expensive due to being a large opening and 2. I want the light from the window, even though if I had doors, I would make them frosted doors. What do you think. Would it look weird if I had a pretty closet, open to the bedroom like that?

I would definitely investigate doors! No matter how organized you may be, it would still look like a closet!

I vote doors...I would not want to look at my closet, laundry basket, hangers, etc as I drifted off to sleep! You could do leaded glass, or obscure glass, so you get the light, but don’t have to see the stuff?

I'd do doors... because to keep your clothing from fading in the sunlight you're probably going to keep blinds closed on the windows most of the time and there goes your light source anyways. If you don't care about that, then I might look into having a transom above the doors.

We don't have a door on ours (intentionally) but it opens to the bathroom and it's a narrow doorway. I think in your situation doors would be better, You don't want to look at your beautiful bedroom and have to see the clutter of a closet,

We don't have a door on our walk in but as said above, it opens to the bathroom hallway and bathroom so it is not front and center like yours would be.

Seeing all the clutter won't bother you? You could run a curtain rod and hang great curtains but that still would block the window which is a nice feature. Regardless, that is what I would do and then add additional lighting to your master.

    Best.

I am pretty neat so I believe my closet would look good most of the time. Having said that, I will see how much it would cost to put on doors.

    Thanks all!

how deep are the cut out parts? deep enough for a rod and clothes to be hung? that would be quite 'out of sight'. a rod will still give you attic access. do built ins on the other side and under the windows.

(but, unless you actually NEED more hanging space, i'd do only built ins, even if your husband shares them too.)

Ninigret - I think so BUT I am not sharing with my husband. He is messy so he can have the other closet all to himself ;).

You seem to have room to do a double barn door that slide to each wall. Barn doors don't which have to be too "barn-y" Here's one with windows, but they come in all styles.

I haven't read the comments - but just looking at the space quickly, it seems to me that the clothing racks, shelves, etc. could be fitted inside the 2 side areas that are recessed - and those areas could be closed off with some sort of sliders or some other type of door system. So - with a setup like that, you would have the ability to close off the actual storage areas when you would like to. So, I don't see that as being an issue, at all. I would leave the center part of closet free and clear of stuff - other than maybe a chaise lounge or some type of chair(s) and a table, or console, something to that effect. And I would hang a nice light fixture - if there is wiring or bring in a swag chandelier - and that would be it (unless I also did lighting in storage areas, recessed lighting, etc.) I would probably have some sort of sliding doors on entry, though, maybe sliding barn doors - or some other type of door system - that could remain open most of the time - and would be attractive when open - but if I wanted to use space as a dressing room, etc. - I would have the ability to close off entire space completely. So - that is the way I would do it.

I would first do a closet layout to see if it even makes sense to make it into a closet. It doesn't look like you could hang a rod very high in the recessed areas without loosing hanging space if that was part of your plan? Also, natural light is not good for clothing so window coverings should be a consideration. Another expense...

It may make more sense for it to be an accessory closet- shoes, purses, etc. where you could put cubes/shelving in those recessed areas. And then a bench with storage to sit on under the windows. And a decorative full length mirror for the wall or you could get one that stands on it's own. If something like this would work for you probably could get away without having to put doors on and still take advantage of the light from the windows.

Try planning it out with built in wardrobes instead of as a closet - so the clothes would still be behind doors to protect them from the sunlight and to hide clutter. Then you wouldn’t need doors on the main opening. Think ‘dressing room’ - nice place to sit to dress/put on socks and shoes, maybe a small table or pretty jewelry chest under the window, that sort of thing.

If you really want a normal closet, you could also look into the cost of making the doorway smaller before adding doors.

I like the barn door idea... they don't have to look distressed at all. Here's a picture of my barn door, it leads to my basement. The typical door that was there before was always in the way if it was open, and because of a staircase it was unsafe to change the direction of the swing. It was impossible to do a pocket door there too, so the sliding barn door was a great solution to a real problem in our house. Not saying yours should look like mine, just agreeing that they can look like anything you want. I like the one above with the windows at the top!! (Ours was actually the original solid wood door, hubby made it wider than it originally was by joining pieces of another old/unused door from another remodel in our house, then he glued a thin sheet of walnut plywood over both sides and finished out the edges with solid walnut. He bought the hardware online. The project cost us about $200 when it was all said and done.)

The problem with barn doors is, you lose the ability to put furniture or art on the walls the doors have to slide over.

But without doors, you're looking at clothes, and however neat one may be, clothes and shoes hanging in a closet aren't that aesthetic to look at. I'd go with a frosted glass door (or doors), or, if it's feasible, built ins on either side of the closet space.

You have a beautiful bedroom space. No closet doors would ruin it. IMO

Generally, even when we have guests over, no one goes into our master bedroom but us. If you want it to be a closet, make it a closet. We should all live the way we want to live. If you ever sell, your realtor will tell you the changes to make at that time. You can get a closet company to do it for as little as a thousand or so. Or make it a diy project. We need to love our spaces and live in them happily, that doesn’t necessarily mean they all have to all look the same.

Barn doors are trendy right now but in a few years??? You have room for a dresser under the windows and if you do your hanging spots on the sides, doors could hide that part so you would have light and a more open space

Thank you all. Barn doors are not really my thing but all other suggestions sound interesting. I had envisioned a very pretty (girly) closet with a small island and a glam chandelier. Some place where I can display all my shoes etc. Hopefully I can make it all happen.

Whatever door you put on will need to match the door of the other closet in the room. I'm thinking French doors, but you probably don't want French doors on hubby's closet.

Shirlpp, that is correct LOL!!! I am planning on never look in his closet when all my stuff is out of there. This is his door. There is a matching door on other side of that wall for bathroom.

If you completely tricked out the closet with built-ins it could look great. But your looking at a lot of $$. Their is beautiful closet cabinetry available.

You could do a less expensive option and just use curtains to conceal the clothes on either side, instead of building in wardrobes? That way you still conceal the clothes and give them some protection from sunlight and dust. I’d do a low profile ceiling mount curtain rail and to the floor curtains to get the tidiest look. But curtains can give a girly/glam feel.

If nothing else I’d look into getting good UV protection on the window before putting clothes in there - UV can be very hard on clothing and it can do damage surprisingly quickly, so you want to be sure your windows have already or you’ve added the UV protection. I think some windows already have it these days, but there are also films and coatings that can be applied to an existing window.

Just build the cabinets with doors, like most closets in Europe. That way you can close the doors, hide the clutter and have your window in the room

Have doors made for the cut out areas on both side. These would be for hanging clothes. Have a dresser under the window.
If you have a dresser in your bedroom and don't need it in the closet ,put a make up table there. Have a smaller size of your chandelier in the closet.

What about trying just some curtains to start? You can pull them open when you want the light and close them when you aren't loving the look of your closet space. Easy and affordable and you can upgrade to doors later if you feel like that's a better fit.

You could put a nice makeup table and stool under window and just screen off the two side parts with shoji screen or even grey linen sheers hang to ceiling the length of the wall both sides, a thought

The question is though this space looks huge, you may find otherwise once you start putting a "closet' into it. Since you aren't dealing with 4 solid walls, the flexibility isn't as great for gaining more space. And does the expense justify what you gain in extra storage. The best place to start is to get that graph paper out and draw it out and then find out what it is going to cost to achieve it and then you can figure out if you can justify the cost of a door.

We have a no door walk in closet in our master, but it is open to a short hallway to the master bathroom. In your situation, I would add closet doors which open outward into your bedroom and use the other side for hanging storage. (shoes, scarves, jewelry, etc)

One other reason for not storing the clothes without a door is dust accumulates on them more readily.

I came across a cubicle curtain track while researching a window in a bathroom question.

The track is used in situations where the curtain is opened and closed frequently. I thought it would be an ideal way to close off the sides where you want to hang your clothes. You could use the same fabric as in your window treatments or something that compliments them.

I know this is years later- but I am considering doing something similar with my space. How big is the main part of your master bedroom? I’m considering walking off a portion of mine to create a second closet (like your nook).
