Is that your front door? The chair in that spot blocks the entry.

How many people use this room? How much seating do you need?

Yes, that coffee table is too large for the room. But notice how it breaks up the black, that's a good thing in something that is smaller.

Tina, I found a couple of different insp pics that have large black sofa's and they pull color from the area rug and other items to lighten up the room. Here they are, just as an example. Do you have a place elsewhere in the house for those two black side tables? I'm not saying you change your style, just showing how color can make the room visually larger.

^Color in the rug, lighter wood chair with grey fabric, color on the pillows and glass topped wood based coffee table. Also the wood floors and lighter walls lighten the room. Notice one of those small stool type tables next to the black chair on the right.

See the colors from the rug in the pillows lighten the whole room along with the lighter walls and white trim. This is what I mean about coordinating but not matchy.

hi, yes that is the front door, i had the chair there for a little but obviously moved it.. lol and hahaha not many people at all need seating in my house. you are right about the color of the coffee table.. it does break it up. just too big.. my sofa and loveseat etc are actually brown not black - not sure if that matters bc still dark, but i think in the photos it looks black bc of the lighting.. the side tables are brown wood too.. ok, yes now you have convinced me to get a lighter color, possibly coffee table.. i don't care for leather in bright colors (if i were to get an ottoman) .. or should i get over that - so either a light wood coffee table? or a light colored ottoman?? would you get square, round or rectangle - if i looked at coffee tables? or even ottomans? what shape..

i really like this but think its too big, but its lighter, right?

I didn't realize the couch and love seat and chair were brown. Thanks for clarifying. If you get a light colored ottoman I think round would soften the room. For a coffee table do a rectangular shape. Can you move the love seat to another room and the chair to the place where the love seat is now? It will really open up the space IMO, especially in your entry.

That Belmont Marble Coffee Table is 41 inches and is quite large for your space. Try a smaller oval or smaller round. You might be able to go as large as 30 inches if it is round.

i was just looking on target. you are right, they have so many great ottomans for cheap prices.. now you have me leaning towards purchasing one of them with color and not leather. which one would you get. i am nervous about matching it only to the rug bc soon i plan to get a bigger rug.. having a hard time looking for bigger and colorful rug.. been looking for a while..

    last modified: 7 years ago

It is easier to start with the rug because you can pull colors from the rug for your ottoman like you did when you chose your throw pillows on the couch you have now. What size rug are you thinking and what color/colors and style?

You actually have a nice rug now. Just move it toward the couch so the front legs of the couch are sitting on it and the front legs of the chair are on it. Unless you want a new one to change things up a little bit.

I love your colorful rug but I don't think the floral pattern is working. Something more geometric like the Nabalis that Denita posted would work better I think. Or something like these.

tina, do you like any of the colorful rugs or are they too colorful? What about budget? Some of these are very reasonable and at least one is pricey. What style do you want in the room? Each of these will give you a different feel when you walk into the room. I like both of katinparidise's suggestions,

hi, sorry, had to look fast today bc i am working,

i like them. they are not too colorful.. i want one with red, green, blue, tan, etc i really like the nabalis one.. but it is 7.10 right? i have to measure to see how big i can go.. i have 6x9 now

but i need 8x10 or bigger and prefer something with a little pile in it. not so flat.

i do not use rug pads, it is too hard for that large size. so i want something also comfortable to sit on.. all my rugs come from pier one i think they are wool?

but this size is too expensive to get from pier one. so i plan to get from one of the sites you sent me - overstock or wayfair etc.. but then i also must be sure that it is the one i want bc i am not mailing back a huge rug.. lol if i don't like it, so i must be sure i will like it.

The Nabalis is 7 ft 10 inches wide and 10 ft 10 inches long. That's very close to your 8x10. I totally get not wanting to have to ship it back if it doesn't work. Some of these sites have sample sizes too.

The art above your sofa should be large. Rule of thumb at least 2/3rd's the width of the sofa. You can do this with one or more pieces

thanks again Denita! this friday starts painting. but i am doing same color, just need to freshen it up so that when i move the pictures there will be no marks. then the pictures will be lowered and moved around. i saw a 70 console in pier one that looks reasonable. however they don't put it together:( so I'm not sure if i should get it. but then after the living room is back in order and pictures done. then the rug.. but i think the 70 console for the tv would be nice. but its online only also- so its hard to see the quality until it comes, which i am not a fan of.

the pictures above the loveseat i was going to leave the same, but just lower them.

i was thinking on the right side of the tv a mirror and then on the left side of the tv put the two small pictures. the one that is there and then the one thats on the right side. is that ok and leave the big piece up in the center. that doesn't need to be lowered does it? the one above the tv...

How big is your TV? How long is that wall?

The TV is supposed to be the focus in the media area.

You want the console to be at least 25% wider and it is better to have it even longer than that...

Normally on the media wall you don't put art above it. Here is an example:

    Amoroso Design · More Info
The exception to that is if you are trying to hide the TV like the room below where the TV is 'hidden' in the black stripe just above the white console and below the wall of art. It blends completely into the black stripe and the art is the focus.

Here is a good article on hanging art. See the link below.

    https://www.houzz.com/magazine/beautiful-new-painting-now-what-artful-hanging-tips-for-the-home-stsetivw-vs~13670

It needs to be at eye level, about 58 inches from the floor or about 6 inches above your couch/sofa/love seat.

Also the art should be large, at least two thirds of the sofa length. If you have two pieces of art that relate to one another, they need to be hung closer together.

question.. with a longer media stand.. and not able to put the flowers next to it or the chair there. what pictures would go behind.. i would like to leave the big one above the tv, just maybe make it a little lower, right? since a longer media stand is usually lower also

    the tv is 46

There are some media walls where people put art above or to the side or even as shown in the last pic all over the wall. Yes, you would lower the art. It is a good idea to get a long low media stand so your TV is lower. It will be easier to watch when it is at eye level as you are seated. The insp pic below shows a long media cabinet and this particular homeowner put art all over the wall. Notice that the art above mimics the size of the TV below and is just above the TV a few inches. The grouping of 3 to the right relate to one another and the grouping of 4 to the left relate to one another so it is cohesive and not all over the place.

Frankly I think it's more difficult to do well.

One more pic for you - I think the tapestry should go over the loveseat if it is staying in the room. The size of the tapestry is too small for your sofa. The art above the sofa needs to be large similar to the size shown below in this pic (size relative to sofa). It has great impact in the room. You don't have to spend a lot of money either. i was thinking of putting the tapestry over the love seat. if you look closely at the picture of the love seat the love seat is over more to the right passed the end of the wall. bc if i move it more to the left you will not be able to get to the window behind the couch. so that makes the tapestry difficult. i want to be able to get to the window. i don't want to block that .. so that makes me confused as to putting the tapestry there bc it would have to be centered over the loveseeat right. i can't center it with the wall can i? or will that look strange?

also behind the tv - i don't like soooo many artworks behind it.. i like one or two or the least that i have to..bc to me it looks too crowded.. can i leave up the one i have the long one above the tv.. but lower it.. then i need something for the sides. but whats the least i can do. before i had one photo on each side. but i was thinking put the two photos to the left and a mirror to the right.. not sure if thats ok.. or what other options for as little as possible.. i don't like too much

Put just the one above the TV for now. That might work with just one piece because it looks like the same width as the TV, which is a good thing :) When your console comes in and you hang the art, we can experiment with having a vase at one end to see how it looks. You aren't restricted to just wall art. You just don't want to get too busy on the wall and console. So some of this will be trial and error to get the right look.

As to the love seat: it does need to move to the left if it stays in the room. If you had a smaller end table there you could probably pick up 6 to 10 inches. If both end tables were smaller then you could move the sofa down too and pick up more room on the love seat wall. Are you keeping the chair in the room? It would be ideal if you could keep the sofa on the long wall and the chair on the wall where the love seat is now and find another place in your home for the love seat. But I understand if that isn't in your plan.

hi, ok room painted. some art work up. waiting for console to come thursday. this is a lot of work.. lol

    rug will be last

yeah, my three pieces of the couch set are the one things i don't want to part with. and the two end tables. they are all fairly new. i agree its kind of tight but as long as i can get to the window i am ok. if i move the love seat over i cant really get to the window. and if i switch the love seat and the chair then the big AC is blocked.. its hard the way this house is set up and i didn't think much when i bought stuff bc as you can see i am not the best decorator.

ok - i said tomorrow - but here is a messy living room for now, don't mind the vacuum and the rug sitting there. and the curtains are like that bc he had to touch something up and it was wet there. but the other pictures are the same but lower..

then this is my dining room

please dont mind my mess.. its only 24 hours since he painted.. so my house is amess

then i have this long hallway that i have rugs for. but didn't out back down yet. and usually hang pictures here. but never sure how many is enough or too much . it looks dark bc i just took the photos all now
