Repiping your home won't solve water quality issues unless your water is acidic and your pipes are lead - even then it will only solve half the problem. What, specific problems do you have with your water?

Have you talked to your water supplier? They're local experts in water quality and know everything there is to know about the water source and the pipes in the ground. It would be good place to start. They might even be willing to do some testing for you. Give them a call.

Our problem is that the toilets, sinks, etc. don't stay clean for more than a day or two before crud starts re-developing. It wouldn't surprise me if we need to do a re-pipe, given the age of the house, but we don't know how to determine if it's a supply issue or a pipe issue. Obviously a plumber has an incentive to say we need to re-pipe. I emailed our local supplier today to ask this same question. Hopefully they are willing to help us to figure out what's causing the problems.

A photo of the crud would help a lot.

1950's house will have either copper or galvanized plumbing. Do you know which you have ( a photo of the pipes would answer a lot of those questions also).

Try calling the Florida Department of Health Drinking Water Program, they have an office in Jacksonville and should be able to help you out with the sampling part. Tell them that you would like to have your water tested. In most states you have to pay for the testing, but it is fairly inexpensive ($20-40ish). That'll tell you if your water is safe and what contaminents are at what levels.

Only one area shows items of potential concern for rapid buildup in fixtures - iron and sulfates present in the major grid. However, Florida waters tend to also be high in tannins and other humic material that is not harmful, but can cause the problems you are having.

How old are the fixtures in question? How rapidly did the problem arise when they were first installed?
