dining room too crowded feeling but needs wall art

Should I take out or add? Is it already overkill? Move things around or what?
Thanks for any suggestions!

The rod is not the correct size, it's obviously too big. I would also like to see some art or a mirror on the wall with the angle ceiling.

I agree that the rod is too long. I'd remove the artificial flowers and possibly move the clock to the angled wall. Overall, I really like your room.

If it was my dining room, I would remove: the item from the table (leave the runner), the fake plants, the small round cream table & the black items on top, and the clock. Then I would add a large piece of artwork on the angled wall and replace the curtain rod with something heftier and the correct length.

Take out the centerpiece on the table and the corner plant. Try just four wooden chairs and see how it looks. Also see if switching out the clock for a painting softens the look. It's a pretty room.

Oh that's so me. Perhaps just leave one orchid plant. A lovely big art piece on that angled wall. Love the clock but not sure if you could have both. I wish I had the room to do one of those flowered murals, I think they are gorgeous and such an impact. Such a pretty room indeed

Your curtain looks like it is shirred onto the rod and doesn't move. I think you should get a shorter rod as others have said, and hang the curtains so they move on it. Maybe hooks with clips, very simple and attractive.

Can we see a picture of the other wall? For my taste, I'd simplify by removing all the decor items including the clock, and adding one large piece of wall art. Not a mirror, something with color that is interesting to look at.

You have good looking furniture but the other things are distracting from it. Can we also see the fourth wall or whatever is opposite the window?

It seems the table could also be moved closer to the window, especially if you remove the decor items on the window wall. It looks a bit as if it's in the hallway.

Does wallpaper appeal, with or without the blue wall?

    Hi famlip-

As others have said, shorten the curtain rod.

Check how low you are hanging the chandelier.

The rule of thumb is that the dining room chandelier should be hung 30 - 34 inches over the dining room table in a room with an 8 foot ceiling. If the room is taller than 8 feet, than raise the chandelier an additional 3 inches for every foot of ceiling height. So if we pick an average of 32" for an 8' ceiling, for a 10' ceiling, we add an additional 6" and a chandelier would be hung 38 inches above the table, with the range of 36 - 40 inches above the table.

In addition, the diameter should be 12" narrower than the diameter of the table (2/3 - 3/4 of the table's width) and 48" from the room's walls so people don't bump their heads on it when they get up from the table or have unflattering light cast on them.

Even if yours is hung at the right height, it feels congested because of the box you have on the table immediately below it, you need to remove that.

The room is over-accessorized and with things of different styles and weights which creates disharmony. The host chairs are are more refined than the wooden country -feeling chairs and table, and even the wooden chairs don't seem to go with the table because the wooden chairs legs are smooth and tapered and the tables legs seem huge in comparison.

The two small tables on the wall behind the table serve no true purpose other than to hold unnecessary accessories, one a glass jar and some other things, and the other a plant. They only add visual clutter and would most certainly be in the way of a diner getting in and out of their chair.

Yes, there is a certain television host who always uses huge clocks in her decor., and that is questionable as is. But never, never in the dining room, do you want your diners to feel rushed and unwelcome?

On the other wall with the table. Do you need that table? Because I don't think there is enough room for it. You need three feet from the table all around, or guests do not have enough room to get in and out of their chairs. You haven't given any measurements, and we only have one view, but it really does not look like three feet all around.

    In summary-

    Remove the clock

Remove the two small tables and what is on them

Remove the other table and what is on it.

Take the two white chairs and put them in the living room and only bring them to the dining area when you absolutely need them for seating for a meal. Save up for a better set of 6. Check local yard sales, craigs list, LetGo, OfferUp.

Find different artwork for the wall. Don't rush. Less is more. When you have guests, they are paying attention to the food and the company and how relaxed you are as a host and if the bathroom is clean.

I switched out the table decor not sure if I like it. The rod needs to be pushed back in, I was focused on the other things and didn’t even notice it was out. I have this art on another wall maybe it can be moved
  • 8 years ago
Or maybe this can be moved? Not sure it fits where it is

Kitchen it a little messy but this is the artwork on a better angle

Some things to try: 1) switch clock and lily picture (might have to hang the pic a bit lower)
    2) clear out all the things under the lily pic (stands, vases, floral plant) and leave that area bare 3) cute sideboard! Switch that floral piece to the left side and place that blue vase on the right side-remove that other lantern-y thing 4)because your light fixture is angular and lantern-like, I’d suggest something other than lanterns for a centerpiece. I could see a beautiful big bowl displayed there, or a crystal vase - nothing in it -lots of cute things at Homegoods to try -good luck!

many good recommendations, but I still feel crowded when I look at the newest photos. Is it too many chairs? Do you need them all everyday? Upholstered chairs maybe in anither room to pull out when needed? If you do need 8 chairs everyday, consider removing the little side table.

Just noticed the black mini blinds- can those be changed to a roman shade, or light colored fabric blind of some type? They creat a dreaded 'black hole'.

Try the lilies, they have the right feel for the room. The abstract is too high-energy (though I like it).

I really like your table, chairs and buffet. However, they don't show to their best advantage, because of their placement and because the other decor doesn't complement them.

Add a curtain to the left of the small window, similar in size to the one on the large window. Those window treatments should be the same, or very similar. Once there is a curtain, you won't need any wall decor on that wall.

Move the buffet to the center of the largest wall, which is the angled wall without the window. It looks squashed where it is now. Hang either the white sunburst mirror or the lilies over it. Not sure if the lily picture is too wide. You don't need any decor items sitting on the buffet.

One large low decor item on the table. No runner. No other decor items in the room. This will showcase your lovely furniture, and remove other distractions.

Made some small changes so far.
    Appreciate all your advice!!!

There's not enough room to walk around the far end of the table, so you cant put anything with any depth there.

But first things first--get rid of the clock. You're trying to relax, and that's not what clocks are for.

I like the clock, live with it and see how you feel with the art.

I like the lily there. I would get rid of the clock and move the small buffet to that wall. Seems like it would allow passage around the table to be much easier.

Remove the clock, add a piece of art to the large angled wall
  • 8 years ago

I would remove the two small tables in back and the lily picture. Leave the clock. Will follow along; good luck!

Gosh the room looks lovely with the curtains open and the pool outside. Beautiful vibe. I like the lily, though it may be too big. How does it feel when you are in the room? Too dominant? I like the lower centrepiece on the table. Makes a big difference to the 'clutteredness' I think.

    Really nice, inviting room.

The small round table with dark items beside the patio doors seems unnecessary.

Y should consider moving the clock to the angled wall and then either changing the rod or adding additional panels.

I would not add "heavy" art to this room -- it doesn't need it. If you want to add color, you could paint the clock or put something else ("light") on that angled wall such as pressed metal musical or plant wall art.

I like your tall plants but cannot tell if they're real or artificial. (Haven't read all the comments.)

If the plants (left foreground and dining table) are artificial, they could be set on a plant stands in the corner; if they're real, perhaps they need to be set in front of the part of the patio door that doesn't open so they can get light.
