Wooden blinds on a bigger window?

last modified: 8 years ago

Our bedroom window is 96w x 70h. Right now we have two black out cellular blinds on the window, and I got top down bottom up mechanism so we could have some privacy in the bedroom but still have a little bit of light. Well, the blinds are awkward and showing their age and I’d like to change out the type of blind. They also move and clunk when it’s breezy.

A blackout feature would still be nice and I would like to be able to get some light in the room while having a little bit of privacy from the neck down.

My husband is very anti-curtain so I am looking for a blind.

My thought was maybe two 2” wood blinds would be a good solution? Would you use a 48” wide wood blind or would it sag? Real wood or fake if you’re concerned about longevity? What other type of blind would you consider?

light blocking is important as this window gets 5am sun in the summer.

One reason I was considering slat blinds is because then I figure I could tilt them open and closed and almost never raise them. Maybe?

I had white two inch wood blinds in the master BR on the east side of the house, and they did let in a lot of light. Dark wood stained ones that I had in the library, less so. I also found that the faux wood blinds were not only heavier, but they didn’t stack at the top as compactly as the basswood blinds.

you can get blinds where there is no hole for the cords to pass through, improving light and privacy control somewhat.

i rarely raise my blinds, and just adjust the slats for sun control when needed.

    A couple thoughts...

I love blinds and have them in all my windows, and have used a lot of manufacturers over 3 houses and many decades.

Thought #1 is that quality sucks on everything these days. Sorry, I'm getting old - but I'm also getting tired of products that suck. It used to be that I could count on JC Penney for quality blinds, but the last blinds I bought from them were so cheap. The slats, even when fully closed, didn't overlap so they leaked light like a sieve. JCP is now dead to me - which is unfortunate, because my favorite wood blinds came from there just 5 years ago. The ones available from them now suck, so I would avoid them.

Thought #2 is that blinds that wide will be very heavy. If you are not planning on raising/lowering them then you probably don't care. If you do plan to raise/lower them, if it were me I would do 2 blinds - but not having them exactly line up doesn't bother me in blinds. Mine are either fully retracted or resting on the window sill, so I don't have to deal with it in that manner. :)

Thought #3 is that I found relatively decent plastic blinds for a good price on Walmart of all places. Yes it about killed me to order from there - but their online experience has been a good one for me so far, and the price-to-value ratio of their blinds was reasonable. I rate the most recent blinds I got from Walmart light years ahead of blinds they replaced from JCP.

Lastly, I found that sheers over blinds has been a winning combination in my house. With the slats open, the sheers offer lots of privacy during daylight hours but also let in a fair bit of light.

These thoughts are all very helpful. I’m thinking that woof blinds may let in too much light. I’m hesitant to get a dark color because the giant window becomes a giant dark hole with a dark window covering (previous experience with this may have led to my husband’s curtainphobia).

Haha! She loves sticking her head between the blinds and barking at the neighbour’s cat.

I was thinking that foldback plantation shutters with a divider (so I could open the top part) would be just about perfect but they appear to be out of my price range.

We have wood blinds all over the house. I've never noticed they let much light in our bedroom, but we have an open circle top above it, so light would come in there anyway. We don't need light control, obviously LOL. In my great room and breakfast nook, I have the double blinds on wide windows but they are under one guide rail (top piece whatever it is called), so the blinds line up perfectly.

I hate to mention such a dated idea...but....vertical blinds would probably be the perfect solution. The vinyl ones would be room darkening when fully turned closed, and doggy slobber cleans easily. You can adjust for the desired amount of light control almost precisely.
