How do you keep the wood siding looking new?

We love this house, and showed the exterior to our architect as the kind of thing we are wanting for our new build. I just had a look at it on google street view, but it was a shame to see how time has left it looking very sad, with the dull, grey siding. How can you keep the wood siding looking new? Are there any good alternatives?

Hello, lovely to hear you like our project! Unfortunately we weren't involved on the build so can't say what treatment was given to the cladding but a good quality wood stain would prevent any aging of the timber (though some people like the aged look). The reason timber cladding goes grey is due to UV rays, so by using a wood stain/treatment with a bit of colour you block the UV reaching the timber. Re-treatment will be required but frequency depends on different brands and exposure. Your architect should be able to provide some advice on different types of timber, including heat treated timbers, and alternatives like composite and fiber cement cladding from companies such as James Hardie (we've used this on several projects - Bracton Cottage on our website for example). Hope that helps!

I was wondering if you’ve had success with recreating a wood look with fiber cement siding?
