I don’t have any rugs/runners in my kitchen. The floor is beautiful and I didn’t want to cover it up, plus didn’t need anything to trip over! I would think that if you want them, most types would be ok

I use this type of washable rug in front of my sink. They come in different sizes/shapes and colors. I love the way they wash and dry.

Here is a pic of the area of my oak floors (real oak) that is directly in front of my sink, dishwasher to the right. I refinished them 14 years ago, but have not touched them since. No rug there - that would be one more thing for me to clean, and I will say that my sister has one for her sink, and it gets pretty grungy before she can get around to getting it cleaned. I'd rather just take a towel and wipe up drips from the floor than have a rug in front of the sink absorb the drips until I can get to wash it.

Also, my house is a no-shoes house. I am not saying you need to be whatsoever. I am saying I suspect it to be a contributing factor to my floors' good appearance. I do have several pets with nails that scramble around.

Use a breathable floor mat.

No rugs in a kitchen for a variety of reasons including sanitation and safety. Kitchen floors need to be clean and trip-free and rugs make it impossible to do that.

I use cotton ones in my kitchen and every week throw them in the washer and in the dryer

You need a rug made of polypropylene (indoor/outdoor rug). My interior decorator recommended Dash and Albert Rugs. They have tons of options and you can find them anywhere (i.e. Wayfair). Great option as any spills clean up easily. I have wood floors and I have a runner in front of the sink (between the island).
