need help finding an area rug (and more)

I know I should be putting this on the other side, but I'm more comfortable over here. :)

I will be selling my home this summer and have been staging rooms, little by little. This bedroom has me stumped. It is a small room, 12x12, with a queen size bed. The walls are plaster and the color is puce.

There are two large windows with simple white curtains. The duvet is a vintage white linen with matching shams (think farmhouse.) Painting the walls isn't really an option and it is a great sleeping color. It runs more eggplant than lavender. My biggest issue is that I need a rug for it. My thoughts were for a predominantly white/ivory rug with pale gray in it. (I'm thinking white would make the room seem bigger) I also want to put in a gray slipper chair in the above corner with a reading lamp (maybe) next to it.The only other piece of furniture in the room is a taller( than wide) dresser.

I have looked at hundreds of rugs online and been to several stores. I'm striking out. and ready to quit. The problem is that many rugs are predominantly gray, and the gray often runs blue. An 8x10 would work, although a 7x9 would be better. I'm also not a huge fan of the ubiquitous trellis patterns.

If anyone has the time, or desire, could you help me find a rug? A huge added bonus would be suggestions for a floor lamp and slipper chair that work well with the rug.

There is a chance the rug and chair will move with me, but as my new husband and I will be combining households, some furnishings will not be needed. Because of that, I am trying to do this on a budget. I'd like to keep the rug under $250. I haven't shopped chairs yet, so I don't know how inexpensive I can go on that item.

Thanks for reading this, and for the help.

Jo

I found both of these here on Houzz. I’ve ordered several things here, and have been very pleased with each product (including rugs).

This rug is $100 over your budget, though. Posters here are so good at finding rugs,so I know you’ll get great suggestions .... I just wanted to see if this is a style you like?

    MizG,
Thank you for taking the time to look and get back to me so quickly! Neither of those is really the style I’m looking for. I don’t want this room to scream it’s a woman’s room. I guess I’m trying to tone down that look with more sleek, modern vibes. I know the room color doesn’t help, butI think a more minimalist look is what I’m after. But not harsh. If that makes sense.

It does make sense! Such a pretty room, and I know our rug experts will find something. Good luck with your house sell! I remarried in ‘14, and it’s been fun combining our things, plus finding new just for us. :)

Without seeing the whole space this is a shot in the dark but what about something textural and natural like a sisal? They are inexpensive and often look more fresh than patterned rugs.

For something that you have no idea will work in a new space, i think cheap is the number one criteria. I would just keep scouting the local Home Goods and try out anything that looks like it might work. That you can do for $100.

Lots of gray rugs here. Rugs

What if you ditched the gray and did white/ivory/cream? With that strong wall colour and what looks like a small space gray may just be a little too much.

For chairs, have you tried Pier 1 or Target? I’m assuming you don’t want to spend a lot and Pier 1 almost always has a few on sale in the store. Here are a few.

    https://www.pier1.com/modern-gray-geometric-swoop-accent-chair/3501576.html?cgid=chairs

    Maybe too feminine but cute

    https://www.pier1.com/sabine-faux-snow-leopard-chair/3201289.html?cgid=chairs

This one is taupe so may not be the right color irl

    https://www.pier1.com/classic-taupe-velvet-swoop-accent-chair/3501745.html?cgid=chairs#nav=tile&icid=cat_furniture-subcat_living_room_furniture-subcat_tile_chairs&start=1&sz=240&showAll=469

You might check Pier 1 for rugs too.

It's better to have less furniture in a small room when you are selling your house because you want it to look spacious. I would probably take out everything but the bed and maybe one side table. I wouldn't spend funds on a chair or rug. BTW, I love the wall color.

Your walls are gorgeous. I love the color. There is nothing as nice as a cold, plaster wall.

I second the rec for a seagrass or such rug.

I know you want a rug, but I really don't see that as a necessary selling point. I think the queen bed is too big for the space. Does this room need to be staged as a bedroom? Can we reimagine it as a yoga space, reading area, craft room etc?

One of the rules of staging is to make rooms look like they have enough space and storage.

I agree, if you want a rug to go as inexpensive as possible.

I'm curious why painting the walls is not an option.

For a perspective from people in the real estate business, post this on the Buying and Selling Homes forum. Real estate agents are likely to recommend that you neutralize the wall color, remove area rugs to show the flooring, and limit furniture to the necessities to make the room look larger.

So lots of thoughts and good ideas from everyone. Let me explain the space a little more. This room is actually my bedroom. It is a 1920's home and no bedroom is very large, but with 5 of them, a new owner could easily merge two rooms to create a wonderful master suite. As much as I love the clean lines of sisal, I'm having a hard time reconciling the fact that it will feel dreadful on barefeet. All those knobby areas! But I'm not saying a definite no, as I like the lines. A lot.

Graywings, I am a former realtor and I generally agree about dark colors and small rooms, but I think I can get away with leaving this one as long as the rest of the room feels visually lighter. I did take down the four poster bed frame and the duvet I'll be using is very airy feeling. Plus, I don't want to spend more money on painting.

Here are another picture of my room to help with scale. The second window is on the wall next to the bed. Also, thoughts on painting the dresser? That's an easy fix.

here's another room that is just about done, just waiting for the rug (shades of green) to arrive.

And finally, if you're curious, here is what my house looks like.

    Gorgeous!!

Looking at your room, what about this rug? Not terrrrribly modern but not too girly either

    Robo,

I'm heading to philly tomorrow for the weekend to neighborhood-hunt. There is an IKEA not to far from my husband's house. I like that rug, but only for this room. I don't see it in my future home, so I might want to go a little cheaper. (And for MTN who suggested CL, I'm scouring it daily. Rather slim pickings around here, though. And I did go to At Home not too long ago. The second bedroom has got AH written all over it.)

Your house is great!! Love that style. You might also try Facebook Marketplace if you are on FB. That seems to be the way people in my area are selling these days vs Craigslist.

I guess I’m in the camp of not adding a chair, and probably wouldn’t even put a rug in, either. I know you want it to look cute and appealing, but I think you can do enough of that with bedding and maybe a plant or vase of flowers on the nightstand or dresser. I also wouldn’t paint the dresser unless you are going to do that anyway. In many places it’s such a seller's market so those things may not even make a difference, besides which you are probably swamped with house hunting and combining lives, so why not take a few things off your plate?

In my area, homes are hardly on the market before they’re sold. In many cases they don’t even get listed because the realtor already has a list of a dozen people wanting to buy.

Just to be clear, Mtn recommended Home Goods -- do you have one nearby? They often have rugs in the $100-200 range.. and some of them are often very interesting!

I would not recommend a sisal in a bedroom ever-- not even for staging. Is there a style that you'd use again in the new house?

Personally I wouldn't paint the dresser-- I DO paint wood but I think the dresser looks nice as is. If you want to lighten up the room, a vase of nice white flowers (peonies? tulips) when you are showing would be lovely.

As for painting the rooms-- there are a lot of 1920 and earlier homes here. I just don't think they're suited to the neutral colors. I am sure many will disagree with me on this but I think your room is lovely and fits the character of an older home.

It's all beautiful.. wishing you a speedy sale and a great new adventure in Philadelphia!

I like your room colors and they suit the period of the home.

Personally, I would buy and do as little as possible! No rug needed. Your floors are lovely. I think the most important thing is that everything be in good repair, pleasant smelling, and spotless. I think the rest is a waste. Good photos are also worth the trouble. Beyond that, I would not do anything. I know a LOT of people disagree, and it is hard to prove one way or the other.

What I would do, is splurge on the exterior landscaping when the time comes (which is already very nice). By that I mean, ferns or flowers all the way across the porch, some big potted plants on the steps. Make it memorable and special. I have fallen in love with homes at first glance, so I think that one bit is very powerful. Once they love the exterior, they talk themselves out of anything concern they might come across..

    My 2 cents.

And good luck and have fun!

So you all have me rethinking the rug. I'm okay with that (I think). One of the reasons I wanted a chair is to hide the cable in the corner. Although I got rid of cable 6 years ago (never installed it in this house,) I'm not about to cut the cable for future users. I was thinking a pretty, lidded hamper might hide the cord. But sheesh, some of those hampers cost more than a rug!

who knew laundry hampers could be beautiful?

    off to googe more.

After seeing the whole room I have to agree with the others in that you don't really need anything. You could maybe put a small light colored chair in the corner for some contrast. That's it.

Agree with Mtn on adding a little bit of extra zing on the exterior.

    Very lovely home!

I'd neaten the cable cord. That's about all I'd do.

Agree on cable cord. It can always be shortened with a connector added to the end.
