Help mixing woods and styles

last modified: 8 years ago

I’m slowly making progress on our dining room; I have the new drapes up and I purchased 2 new chairs. I’m reusing a couple antiques from my grandparents that I like as is and am overall trying for a transitional informal-ish room. My next step is replace my dining table and chairs. My intent was to use the blue chairs below at the ends of the table, then have wooden chairs for the other positions. My husband and I both like this extension table in walnut:

But I’m not sure if the combination of the mid-century style and wood go with the other pieces

The swatches propped on the drawer are photo samples of cherry and walnut options for the table

If the table works, the next dilemma is the chairs. I have 2 new blue chairs for the ends and won’t be able to get matching cushions for side chairs. The swatches on the seat are the blues that are available.

Each of these chairs have the option for either a fabric or solid wood seat.

Would the table work? What about any of the chairs - fabric or wood seat?

Thank you!

    I like the dining table.

    You need a rug.

You need a different chandelier (why is it swagged?)

Marble top table…hallway or bedroom, or if you have a larger bathroom, it would be great there. Put the white milk glass on it.

What you are using as a sideboard definitely is a dresser. I am guessing late 1920’s/early 1930’s, however it is not mid-century in style.. If you love it there, keep it. Put the two blue chairs on either side and use as extra chairs. I would stain the legs darker.

For the MCM table, have 6 matching chairs, more in the style.

A good sized piece of art over the sideboard. I’m afraid a mirror would accentuate that it is a bedroom piece.

All pieces and rug are from West Elm.

    Thank you for the feedback.

The “sideboard” is a dresser with the original mirror removed (my grandmother’s)

Unfortunatetly I have no other places to put these pieces in the foreseeable future. I have several pieces I could swap around, but when I posted about that a few months ago, this was the best option I could find. I know most people in my generation are donating their family pieces to charity because it’s not the style, but I just can’t bring myself to do that so I’m trying to find a way to make them work.

Is there a style that might be a better fit than the mid-century without turning it to formal?

The light itself will be replaced or changed eventually (its swagged because my husband thought the table should be centered on the wall and when we changed that we never moved the light). I do love the one you posted Judy!

I also love the look of rugs under tables, with small children and a dog who sheds, I’d rather have hardwood instead of carpet under the table for now.

A couple of thoughts. If you go with any of those chairs, focus on form not color do seat. Easy to change seats. When I look at this lovely room, I would take it in an “eclectic” direction. I would consider shopping antique stores and finding a couple pair I’d chars for side chairs and d a mix of chairs. It would make the various pieces of furniture make sense. Then do a nice large rug to anchor the look and of course center table and relocate junction box so dining fixture is centered over table. I like your blue in the host chairs, but make sure their seat height is right for dining seating. Seat should be 18” High. I would find a great light fixture to set the eclectic tone. Here are some photos for inspiration. The room with orange niches has great light fixture. Photo with red buffet has neat mixed chair look. Photo with upholstered host chairs show table with mixed chairs and nice use of ghost chairs. If you don’t like mixed chair concept, look for some chairs like these. Much better for the style of your table. Could you put the buffet/dresser on another wall. I think a taller China type cabinet would give your room more presence.

For child and pet friendly rug concept, check out Flor.com. They have a wide variety of rug “squares” that are very easy to clean or replace for big problem spots. But I would do that last because it will rely largely on what colors you do in the room. I will post some fixtures for you too. Bbl

I tried to put together a eclectic look for you. I put a top on your dresser since I just saw you don’t have another place for this piece. I think you could hunt some antique shops and fine something and possibly paint it. Just need to tie it in with other pieces. Sconces either side. A rug with sculpted shape would be fun. While children are young, I would do something like this to keep costs low and durability high.

    Ghost chairs.

Flo, love this so much. I love eclectic and this is great inspiration about how to mix styles like a pro.

Ps. Are ghost chairs still considered pretty ‘in’? I love the look but have been wondering lately.

I use them for this type look especially with families. But you can use any chair that suits. In fact, I was thinking you could use the chairs you have but paint the wood parts bright blue! So lots of possibilities. Just be creative but keep some key themes. Your blues and some black. Have fun.

Flo, thank you for the ideas! Theyre fantastic! I do like eclectic, just really struggle pulling it all together.

There is one other wall where I could put the dresser/sideboard. That wall is 68.5” and the dresser is 47”, my only concern is the baseboard heat would be blocked (plus I’d have to find another spot for the card table that’s currently there)

I temporarily moved the light (thank you zip-ties) so it’s more centered. And put the blue chairs next to the dresser for now as Judy suggested. I haven’t Scotchguarded them so I don’t want them to be used yet

I wouldn’t put a wood piece in front of dry heat especially an antique, so that means it stays were it is. That means we need the height for sure on top of dresser. It could be a number of things but start with your table and chairs and layer in lighting and accessories. Is that door your front entry?

Flo - yes, that’s the front entrance and the one we use all the time. A new rug is on the to-do list, but it moved down the list after that innocent looking dog destroyed a red pen all over the existing rug. :)

Do you think the dresser/sideboard needs shelves above it, or a large picture would work?

Lol. That happens. I want to look around to see what might work best over dresser. Bbl

I remember your other post now. With the table under the light, it looks so much better.

How about this for a quick fix until the dog ( I’ve got a chewer as well, rescue and we love him) gets more settled down?

Stain the navy chair legs darker. Put them at the ends of the now table and put two each of the now chairs on either side.

Get an indoor/outdoor rug for under the table…it will make a huge difference in how the room looks. This way, if something happens you can either flip the rug or take it outside and hose it down. I like this 8 x 10 rug at $139.00 where the border will outline your table and chairs and work with your window treatments.

Scour consignment shops and thrift shops for a piece of art for over your Grandmother’s piece. I have found some great things for my house that way.

    Thank you for the suggestions.

Judy, I like that rug and I appreciate your optimism that our “angel” will outgrow the chewing phase. She’s a rescue as well and after 2 years, every time we think she’s outgrown it, we’re proven wrong!

Before I make the commitment to purchase the walnut MCM table, is there a style that might work better?

This is typical of the 30’s dining set.

You could try large antique shops for “authentic” pieces.

And, yes, you could find something brand new which will work. These tables are from Wayfair.

You could also do a mix of finishes: stained top with white…would look very nice with your drapes.

So my husband vetoed the ghost chairs along with the ‘eclectic’ mix of chairs.

Would either of these be too MCM to pull off the look?

I think it could work…but you need something on the floor to marry it all. I still am pushing the indoor/outdoor rug for under table…8’ x 10’.

Thanks Judy, those chairs were actually my favorite. Now I have to figure out how to con my husband into driving 3 hours to check them out. :)

I guess I am on a fire safety kick tonight as I noticed that your lovely drapes are over the baseboard heaters. Do you no longer use the heaters?

Thanks for your concern Kate, our heat is hydronic, not electric, so fire is not a concern.
