Help me finish young family great room

I can’t seem to finish our great room, please help! I need new rug/rugs, wall hangings, coffee/side tables, lamps and possibly curtains. I need help deciding on a cohesive look that is fresh and young.

The tile is dark beige with yellow undertones. It cannot be replaced at the moment. Walls are Edgecomb grey. Sofa and chairs are new- they stay. Side tables and sofa tables need replacement- I think the color clashes with the leather chairs. Mantle and accent pieces can go. The desk in the TV alcove will eventually be replaced with floating shelves. This space is open to the dining area and kitchen. Kitchen has dark cabinetry with yellowish/brown countertops. Kitchen has industrial gold pendants and I would like to continue with pops of gold throughout.

I would love a bold statement rug and am drawn to the geometric Hamadan look rugs (I’m talking imitation, synthetics here) I have seen some in red on overstock, but I worry it would suck up all the light in the room. With small kids and dogs, I am on a tight rug budget. Does the 2 rug look work (they are 6x9 and 5x7) or would one really large rug be better? I also like the idea of neutrals/whites with pops of gold, but worry that might not work with the cream sofas. Suggestions for coffee and side tables? Curtain panels on the ends to soften the window? Lighting?

Thanks!

Turn the coffee table around so that it is parallel with the fireplace and the sofa, moved as kifische described above. A navy or navy patterned rug with look good with the pillows and brown leather chairs. Put the cream chair where the sofa is now, close to the sofa, making an "L". The TV is fine in the niche. If you do mount it, leave the chest and place a mirror or large piece of art or three b/w photos in matching black frames. The b/w photos could be of your children .

Can your sofa face the fireplace? It would be easier to watch tv I think...

What about the console used as a sofa table?

You have a lovely start so I would begin by moving out that which isn't staying...

I agree that the two rugs don't look quite right...

    It's really a smashing area :)

Here is DD's greatroom, very similar in size and configuration as yours. It's a different style and still needs some finishing touches, but maybe the furniture layout, which is very comfortable, would work for you, given the similarity in shape and size of the room.

^^^ This! Love the texture of the rug and the way it coordinates with camel leather. Agree, use the console on the wall behind the sofa when you move it. Please try moving things and post new pictures so that we can see.

Start by removing everything from the room that isn't going to stay. Then we'll rearrange the remaining pieces and do the tweaking you need before shopping for a rug.

We think it would be nice to remove all of the clutter first, plus all of the rugs. Then reconfigure the living room similar to the layout below if possible. Once this is done we can help with the rest of the room.

Please get yourself a single rug that's this large and hang your piece over the mantel.

Okay, I did a quick and dirty rearrangement. I agree, console behind the sofa looks good. I like how it opens up the walkway to the back of the house. My only concern is that you can see the sofa/console when you walk in the front door. Is that weird?

The leaning wood piece on the mantle is actually covering the plugs for a TV. Hubby has his heart set on hanging a new , larger TV over the mantle. So that’s happening. When my shelves go in the current TV alcove, I will fill with a few books, pictures and decorative accent pieces.

Sorry about the lighting- We were blessed with sunshine this afternoon.

    2 thumbs up so far...

I would think an oval coffee table?

As an aside, I love your dining/side chairs..

This is the view from the front door. Is it odd to see the big sofa and console like this?

    Not at all...

I would prefer the console in this hallway with a lamp and large piece of art. It is too bulky, wide and dark behind the sofa. Then pull the sofa back into the area now occupied by the console. Use the table under the TV on the wall behind the two chairs once you've done your shelving there. Put baskets for throws, or stools for extra seating under the table. Measure and make sure the new rug will be minimum of 2 feet wider than the sofa. It should slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa and expose at least 12-15" of floor between rug and hearth.

I hope your new TV is no larger than this. You're gonna need some big art on that wall where the console used to be.

Thanks, pennydesign! decoenthusiaste, I like the idea of the desk behind the sofa as a lighter piece. I have tried the console in the front hall and it’s just too big. Every time I put furniture in that hallway, it ends up looking cramped. Groveraxle, I will try to keep hubby reined in on TV size. And yes, that wall is HUGE! I love the drama of the big piece, tho. It helps so much to see it all in action.

I just took a couple new pictures since the ones from this afternoon were so bad.

Hey, ot Emily, but how are you getting your palm plant to look so good? I have on in the bedroom near the window and it's not doing well. It may be suicidal.

It’s a majestic palm that I picked up a couple weeks ago. It only looks good because it hasn’t had time to die yet! It seems to be doing okay in that corner. It is usually bright, but doesn’t get any direct sunnrays. I also try to spritz it with water every few days to keep the humidity up. Luckily, my local Home Depot is selling them for super cheap, so if this one goes I can always try again.

Please try swapping the two chairs and round table with the club chair and square table, placing the table on the sofa side. Agree, the console is heavy behind the sofa.

If you're after a bold statement rug, as you have said, the console will work there. (Just considering the finished look here)

I think the rug is the next thing to do...

Do you have any color preferences? Price?

Yes to a less clunky sofa table.

I don’t have a problem with the buffet behind the sofa. Maybe something else would be somewhat better, but you have the piece, so I’d use it.

groveraxel, do you think the table holding the TV is too wide, not long enough to go behind the sofa?

I already would like to replace the coffee and side table. Would it be too ‘matchy matchy’ to also do a sofa table as part of the set?

As for rugs, I like the idea of a bold statement piece with a few different colors I can pull for accents. I am mostly drawn to reds or navy’s. I tried a warmer toned red and dark blue rug previously, but it didn’t work well with the color of the coffee table or leather chairs. The biggest catch is I need at least a 9x12 for under $500. Polypropylene here I come!!!

tqtqtbw, she can try the console that's under the TV as a sofa table, but I suspect it will be too short.

Emily, don't get a matched set of tables. It'll look like a furniture showroom. I think you should aim for tables with legs, something with less visual weight than what you currently have, tables than don't overpower the seating.

Can you eventually drywall that niche and do floating shelves on both sides of the fireplace?

Renee, I like your idea, but cost could be a factor, We will probably only be in this house for a few years, so we are trying to keep projects to DIY and things that will be a good investment for resale.

Groveraxle, thank you so much for doing the pictures. I have NO visualization skills. You have no idea how much this helps me!

Here is what I have been looking at so far for rugs:

I ordered this one from Target the other day to try out. It had good reviews, and is returnable to the store. Still a little nervous that it might be too dark/overpowering.

Aria Green Rug I love the pops of gold in this one.

Regan Rug Like the overall look, but this particular one is probably too vibrantly orange.

Green Vintage - There are a few rugs in this line that I think are pretty

I also like the rust and softer red rugs that groveraxle did.

The first rug above (which is the last one you linked) is gorgeous. Unfortunately, it's not in stock.

Thank you. I agree. Rug #1 does look great. I have a notification set up so I will get an email when it comes back in stock. It seems to be sold out everywhere. I definitely don't like the 2nd and 3rd pictures. Officially crossing those rugs off the list.
