Plantation shutter color choice

Hello, we are trying to decide on a color for plantation shutters we are about to install. One salesman told us to try and match the trim as close as possible. He has a color that is close, but not exact. Another salesman is telling us to go with a traditional white to match the exterior of the home, especially if we can’t match the trim exactly. These will be outside frame shutters as we do not have any decorative molding around the windows right now. Suggestions?

I think I’d stick to white.

I'd paint my trim white, baseboards, door casing etc,, and do white something ELSE.. And i WOULD NOT do outside mount shutters. Consider a different window treatment entirely. You can get the same versatility in other methods. Silhouettes, Nantucket shades for instance.

White for exactly the reason one salesman recommended to match exterior. Any window treatment that does not go with exterior is distracting to overall curb appeal. Agree with Jan M. to do an inside mount as it will look cleaner and less bulky especially near a door. I am going to look at her other recommendations for my window treatments.

I agree. Roman shades would enhance the area.

Do an inside mount if possible. You'll need to trust the installer on his suggestion. If you change the trim color or not, match the shutters with the trim as close as possible. Good luck with the project.

Why? Match it to the interior trim as close as possible.

Whether or not the color matches the exterior is irrelevant. No one is going to be able to tell if the color of white is off from the exterior trim. One, you have to see it thru the window and two you're never going to be right up on it outside like you will be inside - it will be viewed mostly from the distance of the curb.

I would match the interior. The exterior isn't as visible, even when you are standing on the other side of the door, and not as much of a concern. I agree with matching the frame color as well.

I also think shutters are too large, scale-wise, for this space. If you want that look go with 3" wood blinds, chances are there is a color that will closely match the trim paint as well.

I also agree with the inside mount.

I would worry more about the interior than the exterior. If the match is a little off, it will be more pronounced so I would consider an accent color. You could do roman shades in a fun fabric or bamboo to match your floor color. It looks like your trim and wall colors are the same... is that the case?

I don’t think she said she is doing outside MOUNT she said outside FRAME. The frame is on the outside with both.

I would match inside. They should send you free samples, at least the company my son worked for does. Get a sample of all the colors in a variety of sizes and quality levels and look at them in your rooms.

Stick with a bright white shutter, it works with every color. Your louver size should be 3 1/2 and you will need a cut out for the door handle. As for the frame, stick with an inside mount frame that will overlap the edges (typically called a Z frame) unless you have tilt in windows. You can give up the tilt in feature if you want an inside mount frame but make sure you can remove your screens without having to tilt the window in.

Personally I would prefer a white trim in the home but even with the monochrome look I would go with a bright white shutter. From what I can tell from your picture it looks like the house has a very clean look which would make me recommend a hidden tilt, that is what is on these shutters. You don't see the traditional tilt rod on the front. You will notice the shutter by the bed is closed on the bottom and open on the top. This is what is called a split tilt. It will allow you to open the top for light but leave the bottom closed for privacy while maintaining a uniform look on the shutter panels. This can also be done with a divider rail but it will divide the top and bottom like in the picture below and you see the rail in the middle.

It looks like you have a very nice home and I am sure it will all look great!

    Good luck!
