Overhangs in mid air without seating are just goofy. And 40” is not enough room for space at at that end. You are already below the 42” recommended aisle space. 55” is bordering on much too wide for an island as well. A whole measured plan would be needed to assess specifics.

Cambria guarantees a fabricator will get 55 1/2" out of a standard slab. If you go any further, you'll need a jumbo at 65 1/2". I'd change a cabinet and get the standard size and 1 1/2" overhang.

I think that's what I wanted to hear, and will take Sophie's advise. I purposely wanted a wider island, which fits our lifestyle. I made sure that I could reach the middle for cleaning :) One long side will be used for buffet-style serving...something that just works well with both my family and larger-scale entertaining. One end has seating for two.

Joseph, I am trying to avoid using a jumbo slab. Currently, my island measures W55"xL91.5"...so I think I'm still in the standard size. I'm actually going to ask the fabricators to use the entire width.

You'll get a 1/2" overhang guaranteed. Sometimes fabricators get lucky and the slabs are a bit wider. You may get 56 1/2", but no crying if you don't.

I agree there is no reason for any overhang other than the standard like on any other counter edge. BTW 40” is min.
