So I'm Giving a Talk on Sans, in NYC on Tues., 3/27/2018

Hi Folks,

I just firmed up plans to give a Sans talk as spelled out in post's title, to my Indoor Gardening Group of America, NYC Chapter. Am revisiting a talk gave there 9 yrs. ago w/ my late friend & Plant Mentor Roger ZImmerman.

If you're in NYC, come on by. I believe it starts at 7:00 pm at the LGBT Center on West 13th St., NYC.

Congratulations Karen S!!! That is awesome!! What topics will you include in your talk? Will you bring live plants or power point or ? Sounds fun!

Thanks WoodN (don't know your name).

Am revisiting my earlier presentation, some history, where, how they grow, adaptations of form. This time am asking Members to bring plants for us to show & discuss, if needed divide &/or repot.

I no longer have the variety of Sans I used to grow personally, I commute by Subway & have had back problems recently, so I can't haul plants w/ me (used to, but no longer).

But I suspect using a laptop I can call up Gardenweb / Houzzz, posts of mine thru the yrs including my older posts under earlier name including my Hydro Sans. Also hope to call up other folks' pix & share things like marvelous Hahnii (Hallii ?) blooms someone posted recently.

Last time my friend & I had both brought a variety of plants to show, & he did the demos as he was shy of public speaking.

Good for you Karen. I would be honored for you to show any of my plants. They are in for a treat. Wish I could be there. And yes, pictures are much easier to carry than the plants are and much safer for both of you. Nice if you could have a slide set up.

I'm posting a new one on what you could find at the local stores. 'My strange pup'.

Congrats Karen. I am sure you will do a great job. Let us know how it goes ok...Hoping all is well) I was wondering if you will talk about the Hydro one you started and bring some of your beautiful ones that you have had much success with as displays?

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the kind swords, but pls re-read my last paragraph which explains exactly what you've just asked.

Well Stush, I may try to take new pix of all my current Sans to show like a slide show. Not many, just 6 or 8 or so. I've got to see what pix I've already got too.

I'll think of Norma & know that she'd be glad to know I was sharing the Sans love.

Hi Karen! I have given a couple of programs on sansevieria. I think they are amazing! The trouble is that around here they grow "wild" outdoors and they can become a problem (if you plant them in the ground you can't ever get rid of them!). Most people don't know of the many unique varieties. I would be honored for you to share some of my posted pictures! I am now on FB and educating my Florida friends!

Good luck on your talk. I know you will do a great job!

Oh Good Manuel, I was thinking of asking you.

It's a later start than usual so turns out is expected to run about a hour (including any Q&A(, so that's what's projected. So do come, it'll be nice to meet you.

And, if you're able, bring some Sans, to show the Folks!

Thanks Laura, yes, the variety of forms still fascinates me. Thanks for the votes of confidence. You too Chris, nice to 'meet' ya!

Hi Karen - I will also try to attend, this is my first time hearing of the Indoor Gardening Group of America! I have some Sansevieria that I think are succumbing to rot from overwatering: lots of mushy leaves that have collapsed.

Will bring some photos of my sad plants, and a sample of the new fast-draining succulent mix that I want to re-pot them in. Hope that is allowed!

Thank you, looking forward to it!

Ann, welcome and show your pictures in a new post. We aim to help each other.

Good luck tomorrow and enjoy Karen! Is your talk being recorded? Would love to see!

Hi Karen, didn't see your second post. My apologies.

Oh it's fine Mike, no apology needed, I just didn't want to retype it or repeat that part.

Oyster, thanks for the good wishes, don't know if being recorded. We used to record it for transcription to newsletter, but no more. This Society is undergoing changes as it struggles to survive after change of leadership & aging out / dwindling Membership.

    Hi Annie,

I hope you can come, & do bring your pix. Sorry your Sans. is struggling, but pls. remove any mushy, rotting leaves & toss them.

Tape it and put it on YouTube?..would be different. Not much about Sans on the tube.

Thanks Stan, nice idea. I'll ask around the Center & see if there's someone who might tape it. I'm flattered you'd ask me to post it to YouTube, thanks.

Sure,I would watch. The vast majority are also houseplants/greenhouse here. Some.I would like to add. I wish the local area C&S would post meeting talks on Utube. They dont,so you would be first.

    Hi Folks,

Back again, I think it went well Oyster, seemed well received as Annie above, thanks for your interest. Am pleased to hear you felt it worthwhile Annie, am glad.

Went differently than planned; I had to improvise logistics. Person w/ laptop was delayed; we couldn't get onto GW/Houzz, but Folks brought plants to discuss. I'd brought a trio myself (couldn't resist showing them).

I spoke some, showed a few Pix of my own Sans & ultimately, called up some search pages of pix of various Sans, to show different forms, growth habits, things like that.

Interestingly, a woman came who had attended my prior talk 9 yrs. earlier & she brought a full pot of beautiful fancier Sans. (whose name escapes me) which she grew from a single leaf I'd given her at that talk. She says I told her to have a lot of patience & she sure did! Am kicking myself for not having asked for a leaf of it back again!!!! A fancier form, w/ cylindrical types leaves, which had V- channels & dark mottling on hard, stiff leaves, quite handsome.

A current member of this Indoor Group attending that night shared that I'd helped her save her Sans from rot by teaching her about using Cinnamon on its roots as an antifungal.

Then I did a demo of breaking up a full pot of Hahnii types w/ many pups & separating & sharing the divisions, including to our new friend Annie above! The donating Member just asked for the Mother plant back & had brought a couple of pots to use along w/ mix in the Repot.

We ended up w/ at least 8 divisions of this Hahnii type Sans. for the Group to take home, myself included. Maybe I can keep this one alive ;>) So that was pretty cool.

I can't find the flash drive I was using, but here's a more recent pic of the Hydro Sans. in just Leca stones & water, never any mix.

and Some goodies from Stush, I believe a couple of Bantel's Sensations.

Cause I love variegates & I think folks don't get to see a Sans that looks like this very often.

Look at this, it's new, I got it from this same Group (Indoor Gardening) shared w/ me a month earlier. Friend who shared it called it S. Fernwood Mikado & I am just enchanted. Something so graceful about its leaf shape's tapered points. I gave it an especially nice pot & hope it'll live long & prosper.

    Ain't it pretty?!

"Tape it and put it on YouTube?..would be different. Not much about Sans on the tube."

LOL You're dating yourself, Stush! Can imagine any number of young'uns wondering what "tape" has to do with anything. heh

I know you mean the other Stush, I still have beta tapes. Vhs was newer.

Karen, so glad your talk went so well. Good for you and our hobby.

Oops! Sorry, Stush! Must have only glanced at Stan's "handle" ... noticing only the "St" .....

What is beta... just kidding, I was around when SuperBetamax came out. We only used VHS though, I remember having to rewind before you returned it to the video store (which we only have one of in town now).

Paul, Stanley in polish is Stush. So any body named Stan is called Stush. I'm not polish but my name is. At least I think so, didn't get my DNA checked.

I converted many of my Batamax movies into DVD's now. They held up pretty well. My VHS's not so well. Family movies are priceless. I still have some super 8's.

    Sorry Karen for off topic.

Karen, Stush and all; If you have a flickr account, you need to look up Gregoriuz. He just posted over 100 pictures from a SE Asian Sansevieria show. We will never see as many variegated Sans in one spot. There are so many beautiful plants pictured.

Thank you but I don't have one.
